Sounds like your viscous coupler shit the bed. The front drive is activated via hydraulic pressure pushing against a set of clutch packs (almost like a limited slip diff) inside the transfer case. It's an easy fix.
***** replacing the coupler is. Getting the transfer case out is a bit of a bitch but replacing the coupler is just pulling out the old one and putting a new one in. It's one self contained unit.
think I can really help everyone here.. I had the same problem 5 months ago but ignored the grinding noise, last week the noise just got worse so when I decided to finally check it out which was 3 days ago, I noticed that the chain inside the transfer case was exposed, it chewed it's way out the transfer case.. and. now I'm watching youtube videos to find out how to replace the dam thing..
I'm having the same problem I think. A grinding noise. were you able to fix it? What was it?
mine was the drive chain inside that runs the at 4 wheel drive had stretched out and was slipping.
