  • Alfred Hitchcock talks to Huw Wheldon about his life's work as an inducer of pleasurable terror in cinema audiences all over the world. He explains how he sees his role as a director of thrillers like Psycho, Rope, Strangers on a Train, Notorious, The Birds, Rear Window and North By Northwest - and what his intentions are in making them. He also discusses the tradition behind his stories, the English love of a good crime story, and the clear distinction between his films and horror pictures, which he regards as "too easy" and has never been tempted to make.

His approach to Fear is suttle, but makes you work for fear unless presented right away, but he makes you work for it to relax as well. Incredible.

Rotkäppchen/Red riding hood served as example for this Master of suspense: The honour goes to the German Brothers Grimm. ☝️✨
