Me too! Not sure which direction I’m going yet as the engine I lined up fell through

@@shortcutgarage oh no, gutted. Do you think you'll be able to line up another 396? I'm in the UK so finding one over here would be difficult.

@@Classic-Shack no problem finding them, pay for them
Is the next issue however lol. It’ll all work out, it has to! I just can’t bring myself to hit the easy button and toss a small block in there. It deserves the big block 4 speed she was born with!

Yeah I agree, definitely go with the big block and a 4 speed.

If your building the car for you it doesn’t matter if it’s a true SS 396 unless you have numbers matching and your keeping it as close to original as possible.
    Just enjoy the project.

My stuff always ends up in the hands of subscribers, not for me. Just wondering if there was an SS guru out there who knew more was all. Absolutely cool car regardless of stature

It appears to be a 396 SS. The VIN# should tell you everything about it. In 69’ however, there were no separate 396 models so you have to look for clues to see if it’s an original 396. The 69’ models came in base model and custom models, in order to have an SS you had to get the upgrades added to the Custom model. Basically, you were allowed to have any variation of SS options that you wanted. The SS was all about options. Having a 3 speed is a good indication that it is an original 396.

Thanks for the input! Still not 100% sure on this one, has the big sway bars too, if someone was making a clone, they did a good job. Regardless it was sold as a base model, I simply did not have the documentation in hand to comfortably sell it as an SS.

    Decode body tag

ok not sure if you are kidding about the SS identifiers but the real truth should be in the chassis. sway bars front and rear. big ones maybe 1 1/8" , next the trailing arms should be Factory boxed note that some folk boxed their own and the factory ones looked homemade as well you just look for consistency in the way they were stitch welded and the last thing I can think of is body mounts you should have four more than a regular Elcy hope this helps you from what I see you have the real deal but those are easily duplicated rides just sharin with you and you asked thanks for your content bro.

I do have the dual sway bars. I’ll crawl under and check the trailing arms when the snow allows!! Thanks!!

El Caminos never came with rear sway bar if it has a 3/8 fuel line is a Tell-Tale sign of big block cars also rear braces on the frame , since the steering shaft has been changed that would have been a Tell-Tale sign I would also verify if it has the correct hole for the tach wire in the firewall but for the most part you would need a build sheet

    Nice fnd Ron..
I was pretty sure there would be no engine in it before u lifted the hood. . As you stated about Chevelle money a 69 El Camino with an intact 4 speed and 396 wouldn't be far behind Chevelle money. Looking forward to what u r going to do with it.

I gave it away did I? You’re right though, a complete running and driving big block 4 speed would have been a little out of reach for me right now. Glad I got this one though!

Shouldn’t that have been standard in 69 though?
