I must say you are one of the best instructors on Tig I have seen on the net so far I don't know if you are certified TIG welder but you are one hell of an instructor your simplistic approach would allow a five year old to understand (almost)

I spent many many hours reading about it and watching videos, to the extent that I was confused by all sorts of jargon and then became too scared to use it! It sat unused for all that time until recently, ovecaming my fear and hooked 'er up! I made a start.. and now that I have watched both of your videos, I deloused my confusion will attack it, in the manner that you have presented it. Brilliantly explained and easily understood . Excellent video Trev. I have taken the plunge and placed an order today with R tech. I am relying on you to keep up the video's . Also have enrolled in a 15 week tig course in local college. Now in my 50s but your never too old to learn new tricks.

Auto collision was my trade here in the U.S., started off just oxy/acet welding,then the trade moved into Mig. I started teaching in 2009,taught hundreds of students to mig as well as aluminum weld with the miller push/pull series , I even taught them plastic welding. I never had the opertunity to learn tig, I thank you.
Loving the help im restoring my old datsun gx 1200 and your videos have helped me a lot we dont really have people in south Africa that do cut and join on kars so big thanks 🤪
Fascinating stuff yet again Trev. I have up & down slope on my old welder but never used them. I was tempted to check the slope of my workshop floor with a spirit level to see which one I should choose but It has all become clear now. :D This tuition is exactly what I need. Thank You mate.

I've taught myself how to tig weld purely from youtube videos and a lot of practice. I taught myself how to oxy weld when I was 14 yo and back in the day I was pretty handy with an oxy welder on light metal and it is very similar. I feel it's a natural progression, you just have to learn your machine. Cheers

Thanks Trevor. I bought the r-tech 161 about 2-3 years ago to replate (2.5mm) the bottom of my 23 foot ally (5083 grade) sailing boat. Struggled and ended up using a 180mig with spool gun on 5356 wire. Nice clear info you have used here though to explain how to use the r-tech tig. Glad I found your channel. Cheers. David

Your metal work is steller but TIG is my living working from gas tankers to fighter air craft to aerospace. Please try to keep your tourch angle close to 90% as possible and this where (i work out of the box) withdraw your tungstung to the thickness of your metal or less, and without exception, use filler rod because i see the seperatation line in your weld which means a weld a weld that will eventually fail, and also try to work closer to the weld zone and you will be surprised at the results!

I've assisted and watched many welders from arc to tig, I worked in the sign industry, drilling rig manufacture and 4x4 accessory manufacture, and none of those guys explained the process to me as well as this video. On a side note, I have seen what flash burn does over time to welders eyes, they develop blind spots, like when you can see a hair floating on your eyeball, make sure you use the best weld masks kiddies!
Old git here... I used to be a certified welder - for pipe welding among other things. I gave it up to go to University and have been working in IT ever since. I still have yearnings to do some welding.
Hi Trev, excellent video, - back about a century ago when I was starting out in the welding game , we would gas weld thin mild steel without filler rods by putting a small upstand on the joints to provide extra filler material. (of course you really need a folder to achieve an even lip)

That was a helpful video. Thanks. I've been having difficulty with welding 18g sheet metal. While trying to help out a friend complete some body work I started practicing on some new and scrap sheet sheet metal and I'm having trouble with the edge burning away of the panel I'm trying to weld. I've also tried duplicating factory spot welds with the TIG torch by adding filler metal metal and aytempting a rosette weld, but again the edges sometimes burn away, making the hole even larger.
Todd Grzech I think learning to bridge is a bit of a learning curve. I normally reduce the power and use a thicker filler. I had trouble with getting to grips with edges melting away also. Cheers Trev 👍

I made the mistake of grabbing an acetone soaked rag mid-weld, thereby getting acetone on my welding glove. Lit up the tig welder and my hand started getting real hot! Didn't see the flames until I threw my welding helmet off and ran out the shop with a flaming hand! Acetone is very dangerous.
I was welding a sumo on the weekend and one thing I notice here in Australia that new mild steel available from wholesalers seems to be really dirty stuff. Using the best methods of cleaning doesn't appear to be the problem but seems to be the the actual material. Welding older steel doesn't pose any problems but the amount of scale etc and pin holes (not good on a sump) was getting annoying as i tried to weld the parts made from new steel. i suspect the amount of rice added to the steel has something to do with it. .
RAYMOND STEELE this is R-techs biggest customer query, people assume it’s negative earth which is an easy mistake to make. The electrons flow from negative to positive so the positive side that gets bombarded always gets hotter than the negative side that the electrons have flowed away from. If you reverse the polarity then the heat is directed into the tungsten not the work piece. When aluminium welding the current is alternated to aid with cleaning this is partially why the tungsten gets hotter when welding using the ac setting. Bab...🤡
You should mention that not using filler rod will produce a very brittle weld. May be ok in some applications, but even in non-stressed parts there's a great risk of cracks / corrosion cracking
Well Done, Trev! Easy to understand. As I am a noob, I had to verify which gas was used for which type of welding for steel; for MIG Argon /CO2 75%/25% mix and Pure argon for TIG. That is correct, yes?

Man Trev this has been a big help I will set my tig setup and try again I really want to tig my panels on my TR3. I don't know if my PowCon has up slop/down slop the only setting it has switch to go to tig and I do have a foot peddle.
You can use the pedal to do the up slope and the down slope by pressing the pedal slowly to start them release it slowly for the down slope.You set the amps and the machine will only go up to that setting.

My welder does it all and I think PowCon was the first in this tech at least in the USA. I bought this unit new back in 1983 things have changed but I still love my old PowCon I shouldn't need a new welder at least at my age.
Obviously you are not using a foot pedal which would make the down slope obsolete as you back off at the end of the weld ? but a great video well done.
Hi Trev love your tig techniques videos has help to demystify my welder. Have a question; in the past I’ve used a mig to weld in patch panels which requires much grinding. When I weld in patch panels with tig where I have small gaps say around 0.5mm the weld creates a hold before I can add filler rod. Only way I have found around this I to hold the filler rod across the gap an strike the arc on the filler rod and melt it into the edges. Any tips. Love to see a video on tig welding thin metal where you have small gap to fill.
Stephen Jolly I know what you mean. I ensure very tight gaps, which of course isn’t easy. The problem is you’re pumping the same power in as you would if the two were touching. Have you tried backing the power off and using mig wire as filler?
Really liked the advise, I think the earlier video of using filler on the ends solved a problem I have had. I have the r tec plasma cutter, have you any tips on using this?
scorched 8 I’ve found my cutter invaluable lately, but don’t have any real advice regarding techniques as with welding. I will be converting mine into a guillotine in an upcoming video that you maybe interested in. Cheers Trev 👍
Really interesting vid Trev. Everyone seems to Tig weld in perfect conditions, on the bench with new metal. My question is, if you lost all your welders tomorrow and had to start a new rusty restoration, chassis and panels etc, would you buy a Tig or Mig welder? Thanks. PS, ‘meet the welder’.
Chris Brunt without doubt you could get away with just a mig but you get to a point where the mig holds you back. No matter how good you are the mig will be far more destructive than the TIG. This is why you could really use both. Cheers Trev 👍
Synergic MIG set -these have advanced settings like pulse and should have a brazing programme www.twi-global.com/technical-knowledge/faqs/faq-what-is-synergic-mig-mag-welding-and-what-are-its-advantages a "DIY" set an be had for around a 1000 quid and will have a basic TIG function included. www.weldequip.com/gys-pearl.htm -note - the TIG lift function seems to include downslope and post gas as it seems a switched torch can be used ?. So you would have advanced MIG - to tackle panels on the vehicle -much easier than TIG , plus the back up of TIG
It's the triggering that's confusing me here. When do you first trigger and do you hold the trigger on. Are you letting go of the trigger at the end or have you let go of the trigger earlier and then trigger again at the end. Otherwise there was a lot of other takeaways. Thank you ongoing.

Hi Trev love your tig techniques videos has help to demystify my welder. Have a question; in the past I’ve used a mig to weld in patch panels which requires much grinding. When I weld in patch panels with tig where I have small gaps say around 0.5mm the weld creates a hold before I can add filler rod. Only way I have found around this I to hold the filler rod across the gap an strike the arc on the filler rod and melt it into the edges. Any tips. Love to see a video on tig welding thin metal where you have small gap to fill.
Stephen Jolly I know what you mean. I ensure very tight gaps, which of course isn’t easy. The problem is you’re pumping the same power in as you would if the two were touching. Have you tried backing the power off and using mig wire as filler?
Really liked the advise, I think the earlier video of using filler on the ends solved a problem I have had. I have the r tec plasma cutter, have you any tips on using this?
scorched 8 I’ve found my cutter invaluable lately, but don’t have any real advice regarding techniques as with welding. I will be converting mine into a guillotine in an upcoming video that you maybe interested in. Cheers Trev 👍

Everyone seems to Tig weld in perfect conditions, on the bench with new metal. My question is, if you lost all your welders tomorrow and had to start a new rusty restoration, chassis and panels etc, would you buy a Tig or Mig welder? Thanks.

Chris Brunt without doubt you could get away with just a mig but you get to a point where the mig holds you back. No matter how good you are the mig will be far more destructive than the TIG. This is why you could really use both. Cheers Trev 👍
Synergic MIG set -these have advanced settings like pulse and should have a brazing programme www.twi-global.com/technical-knowledge/faqs/faq-what-is-synergic-mig-mag-welding-and-what-are-its-advantages a "DIY" set an be had for around a 1000 quid and will have a basic TIG function included.
www.weldequip.com/gys-pearl.htm -note - the TIG lift function seems to include downslope and post gas as it seems a switched torch can be used ?.
So you would have advanced MIG - to tackle panels on the vehicle -much easier than TIG , plus the back up of TIG

It's the triggering that's confusing me here. When do you first trigger and do you hold the trigger on. Are you letting go of the trigger at the end or have you let go of the trigger earlier and then trigger again at the end. Otherwise there was a lot of other takeaways. Thank you ongoing.
Yes Patrick unless you have the 4t selected hold trigger down until you want the weld to end, when you release it, the welder goes into down slope👍
