😇 How old are you? 22
📝 What are you studying? I just finished studying English Literature at the University of Exeter. But we are students for life, and I hope that I will continue learning even though I am out of structured education.
📚What are your favourite books? • 200 book recommendatio...
📝 Have you written a book? My life goal is to be a published author and make a living from writing and I am using this year to gain experience, build up a portfolio and work on a book with my agent. I have just finished the final draft of that book, as you can see in this video. I did self-publish a book about bullying when I was seventeen which is available on Amazon (amzn.to/3mdJKLm), but I'm slightly embarrassed by it now!
🎃 Do you have merch? I don't have merch in the traditional sense (I can't imagine selling something with my face or name on haha!), but I do have a stationery company where I sell planners for students. These are all designed with students in mind and follow models which I've used when planning my studying. Our products are printed in pastel colours on recycled paper: bit.ly/3wgsR85

The concept behind Winesburg, Ohio sounds similar to Ray Bradbury’s Dandelion Wine. For anyone seeking a slow-paced story about the passage of summer through the eyes of a small town, Dandelion Wine by Bradbury could be another great choice :)

Love this video concept Ruby! Do you think you'll do one for fall??? I would love to see your fall book recommendations and I'm sure many others would too! Also, if you haven't read it, you should read Peace Like a River by Leif Enger. It feels like a modern American classic and it's absolutely beautiful. It also talks a lot about faith which I think you'd enjoy and it's such a good fall/winter read!!!

As someone living in the Deep South in the USA, South Dakota is not part of this area. I can see why there is confusion but it is northern Midwest. Similar in some ways but very different in other ways. Great list. I love Harper Lee and this year read the book Furious Hours by Casey Cep, all about Harper Lee’s life. One of the fascinating parts is that she grew up knowing Truman Capote. What a unique life she led. I need to read Atonement.

If you have not read it yet, I highly recommend the book Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. It is both a coming of age story about a young girl left alone in a shack in the marshes of North Carolina as well as a murder thriller. An excellent version of the book just came out as a movie in the US in July produced by Reese Witherspoon’s movie company. The descriptions of the marsh and nature are very much a part of the story. 🥰

When ever I’m watching these videos and ruby is recommending a bunch of books any that I think would be interesting and that I want to read I pause the video and find the book on Goodreads and add it to my want to read list. Even though it’s currently winter here in Australia. For me the best summer reads are the little house books. Farmer boy is my favourite because I just think all the food that is described in all of the books but especially farmer boy sounds sooooo good.

I just finished reading most of his Middle-Earth books, and I fell in love with them! His love for language shines through in the archaic English he uses and the languages he himself created. Nature is also a major theme in his novels, so they are a perfect summer read! Enjoy your summer!

    • @shaunOG91
      @shaunOG91 2 года назад +5

You put it so well! I feel like his books can have this stigma around them for people who aren’t into “modern” fantasy books but in reality he is like Shakespeare of fantasy, for lack of a better description on my part :D The books are EXCELLENT regardless of their genre. One of the many things I personally love about them is how much importance is placed on friendship and platonic relationships, and the ever present sense of hope against all odds.

@@shaunOG91 Exactly! It's because of that "stigma" that it took so long for me to get into the books. Every time I heard of the Lord of the Rings I immediately imagined something like Harry Potter wizard magic or something like an urban fantasy, yet it's nothing like that! I mean Tolkien wrote The Lay of Leithian, a poem with over 4200 lines of iambic tetrameter! The LotR is fantastic, but once you read past that, particularly the Silmarillion, there really is no going back :)

    Feeling like you're constantly overlooked
can make us question our worthiness
Your worth can never be determined by
someone else, People not giving you the
credit that deserve is always their loss.
You don't have to prove yourself to
    anyone.

South Dakota is actually in the Northern United States, not like the deep south at all! Guess it's an easy mistake because the name is misleading...just thought it was funny. :) Great recommendations! I will have to try them out.

IF you are interested in World War One, try "Soul of the Soldier" By Thomas Tiplady who was a chaplain in the BEF. It was published in 1917. Try the poem "High Flight" by John Gillespie Mcgee Jr. It is from World War II RCAF Battle of Britain. KIA 1941.

Unpopular Opinion but I hated We were Liars. Mainly because of the weird feeling when reading about her trauma while knowing myself a lot about trauma and family dynamics by personal experience and studying psychology. The writing was actually what I liked (the poetry like writing style).
For me it is a no but recommend for summer: The last summer (Ann Brashares)😭, Waiting for you (Susan Colosanti)💞, The Spymaster's Lady (Joanna Bourne)🤭 and as Thriller for Summer Night the Smoky Barrett Books by Cody McFadyen🤩
Maybe nobody asked but anyway 🤷
