Having already fished off coral reel ledges into big drop offs the spot that you were fishing in looks very difficult. Those incoming waves weren't making things any easier either. Good stuff man!!
Did you catch Large GT with it yet? I live in HAWAII and I plan on using Large popper and stick bait lures 100 to 200oz with it to catch Large GT Hopefully 100lb size. We usually use an extremely large and heavy surf rod and slide bait whole Octopus 🐙 or fish to catch over🎉 100lb GT. We fish mostly off cliffs so we use a sliding gaffe that slides down the line to gaffe the fish. Then we pull it up with a rope. My friend caught a 135lb GT years ago. I will try my luck with using poppers and stick bait lures. I'm new to using lures. I usually just dunk the bait with a heavy lead and wait for the fish to bite. I'm going to try to copy the way the Australian guys catch GT using large braided line 100 to 130lb test with 200lb or larger leader line for the lure. I'll try 250lb braided line connected to 120lb braided main line with the GT knot instead of flourocarbon leader line.
Hi 🤙 I did catch some 40 Lbs GT's on it it but nothing massive and i would also rather suggest my biggerb set up for the big GTs, which is a Noeby Infinite Ocean 8'6" rod fitted with a Shimano Spheros 20000 reel, 80 Lbs Tasline and anything between 100 to 250 Lbs Shock Leader. I love casting poppers for GTs it's addictive, wish you the best and tigh lines, please don't hesitate to send me some pics of those 100 Lbs plus GT on my email saltycedmauritius@gmail.com or you can find me on Facebook or Instagram Salty_ced
@salty_ced a couple of weeks ago I caught my first GT on my new NOEBY GAINERS NBG862EXH Rod, New Penn spinfisher 950ssm with 77lbs 12 strand PE braided line and 250lb 8 strand PE braided line for the leader. I caught it on a New Halco Giant Trembler RED HEAD WITH WHITE BODY lure which I bought the day before at S. TOKUNAGA FISHING SUPPLY on sale for $11. I walked to the point of the Breakwall which is well over a mile out to the ocean on boulders spaced apart. You have to practically hop from one boulder to the other. Waves were going over the wall so it was dangerous. I had to watch the Waves. Got there at 1:30pm and left at 6:00pm to walk back in. Caught the GT at around 5:30pm. While I was reeling it in just before the lure came out of the water, 2 GT'S chased the lure and 1 swallowed the entire treble hook. The drag was almost fully locked so the GT couldn't go nowhere. I pulled it out of the water and the tip snapped just above a boulder. I grabbed the leader line and pulled the GT to a location where I could deal with getting the table hook off. The GT was thrashing around so much that one of the treble hooks hooked 2 spots on the top bone of my finger. I had to quickly rip the hook out of my finger before it went in deep into the bone. Since I was going to eat the GT, I had to puncture it in the brain 🧠 behind the eyes both sides so it didn't move around and I could get the hook out of it's mouth. All 3 of the treble hooks were firmly through the mouth of the GT so there was no way that it would shake itself off. Had a hard time getting the hook off. Didn't have a scale on me but I'm guessing the GT was close to 30lbs. Video recorded it with my phone and took pictures. I will email you. This past weekend I missed a smaller size GT using the 50g NOEBY Popper lure with the Holes in it to make a jet stream when water goes through it. Red head with silver or transparent body color. It grabbed the popper just before it came out of the water in front of me. There were over 5 GT around it. Just before I was about to grab the leader line to pull it up, the Treble hook came off and it fell in the water. It was around 12 to 15lbs roughly. Lost about 5 lures out there due to the braided line getting knotted up and having to untangle it. Some sank to the bottom and got caught on the rocks and others broke off and flew into to ocean because the braided line tangled with the bottom eye nearest to the reel and then bent the eye and broke off while casting. Lots of problems with the braided line getting tangled when casting out the lures.
