A simple, clear, time-effective and unpresumptuous tutorial. I wish more tutorial makers would adopt your attitude to that task. Way to go, DudelyPro! :)
@Kittykatboy That's an excellent point. i do believe that you are correct in questioning the 1% transitions. you could either stay away from such a harsh transition, or you can always convert to an editable poly and clean up the poly count afterward
@marioorange Hmm... try selecting the shape, convert it to an editable spline, then use either segment or spline selection to select the whole shape and rotate it 180 degrees in whichever direction makes it follow the path in the way you want it to. Second answer: No they don't need to be vertical
@Kittykatboy Also, the complexity of the spline objects used to loft will effect the poly count, especially if you are transitioning between a complex spline to a simple one and vice versa
excelente tutorial, tenia bastante dificultad para entender esto de modelar con loft y este tutorial me ayudo bastante, debrias hacer mas tutoriales, pues veo que es el unico que tienes
@DudelyPro i found an answer to my problem thanks anyway very much ... for your help my question was very hard and important .... look in the modifiers and find the command SUBDIVIDE ... this solved my problems a lot !!!! hi from greece
Hi, Create 1 star and 2 circles. 1st circle bigger than the second. Edit into spline your star and attach it with the circles. Use boolean to substract the circle with the star to trim the heads of the 2nd circle to trim the inner side of the star.
Why when I took the method of : selecting the line + pressing loft + path 00 + pressing get started + clicking on the circle. It started a new cylinder not a cylinder on the line ????
How did you make the 8 star shape? I can make that in illustrator and Photoshop. But I am finding it very difficult to make shapes here in 3ds max. I don't know how cut an object in half .
Umm.. Do you know how to do a Phillips Screwdriver head..? I've got pretty far with it, but my head looks kinda like a Phillips screwdriver head, but it's not as good as it could be, like a normal Phillips screwdriver head. It's very hard, I've made a 4 point star shape, then I made the 4 points go behind the middle of the 4 point star, then straitened out the angle of the 4 points and they're.. I closed 3ds max.. it's very complicated, but with your video, I got pretty close to making a Philips screwdriver head.. it's 3:28am, I figured I'd give the Philips Screwdriver a shot.. I'm tired.. maybe I'll try again later, but it's very hard.. Please make a video on how to do that, so I can learn more about the lathe tool, I'm sure anyone can make a flat head screw driver, ... thanks for teaching me a little bit about the lathe tool, very nice tool, I feel it will come in handy in the near future of using & working with 3DS Max 2012 x64. (+1) & Subbed for such a helpful video & Tool in 3DS Max.
ok, I figured out how to do just what you did, however have another issue lol. Once i convert to edible poly and select the vertices to move them each vertices axis is all screwed up and each is at different angles. I tried to change pivot etc didn't work. how do i change the pivot of all the vertices to allign in x,y,z the same?
How do you simplu "select" the tip of the screwdriver? I've tried to do same as you did, but nothing happens, i can't select just a part of the object.
Do you have a tutorial that shows how to set up a path and make the objects like the circle etc. sorry a noob, but this tutorial is cool and i am making some tools that this would help with immensely.
@marioorange Unfortunately, I don't know anything about autocad or how 3dsMax and autocad work together but... If I were to take a wild guess, I would say try to ad a bevel or an extrude modifier to it after you detached the pieces. Sorry I could be more help
Ok so I get how to loft, and I can do it pretty well. Today I lofted a pencil. Pretty straight forward, but the poly count seems a bit high at 1052 polys, and I have a feeling it's those 1% shape transitions that are pushing it up. I'm wondering is there any way to manage the poly count while lofting?
please help me, when i select the loft modifier to correct the twist and i click on the shape, i cannot select the last shape in the model (when i make a rectangle selection, nothing happens) i'm using 3ds mask 2015 by the way
hi there, i don't know if i could still remember, but under the loft modifier, you could click path or shape, just choose shape, then select the shape you would like to modify (rotate, move, scale). hope this helps you.
thanks for the tutorial ... i try to make a loft but the my shape doesnt follow the path ... isnt that weird .. ? .. it follows the path but in mirror !!! why ? second question : do the shapes must be vertical to the path ? thanks from mario
@DudelyPro one more question ... tuff question :) i warned you! if i import an volume from autocad a complex volume maybe !... how can i manage it and put segments (lenght, height etc) so after i can detach them and use them so i can apply materials . and these segments can i have them at a specific distance or manupulate them at my will .... :) tuff questions :) for tuff guys :):):):))
Hello, Very good tutorial! Thank you! I just have this problem, I want to make a guitar neck, I use a rectangle, the neck shape, then the headstock rectangle, and it never uses my rectangle in the direction I want, I need to rotate the guitar shape after the rectangle and the rectangle is always rotated 90 in the wrong direction, can I rotate triangulations?!?! I'm so lost with this! :(
@DudelyPro thanks for the answer .. i appreciate it very much ... i work also autocad ... there things are more easier but you can do few things !! .. i did loft there and it was easier there .... thanks anyway ... mario ,athens

Way to go, DudelyPro! :)
I was stuck with the exact task and your video helped me out even after 13 years))) Thank you a lot!!
I really didn't know I could do anything more complex like that with this tool.
thank you
Best tutorial yet on lofting answered so many of my questions THANK YOU!!!
that is really a simple and easy to understand tutorials. I really enjoyed watching this! Lots of thanks! really appreciated!
Best tutorial i've seen yet on youtube very clear i'm lofting like a pro now
@Kittykatboy That's an excellent point. i do believe that you are correct in questioning the 1% transitions. you could either stay away from such a harsh transition, or you can always convert to an editable poly and clean up the poly count afterward
@Reedy244 Hey there, the second shape is made from a spline circle > converted to editable spline > then modify it to what ever shape you want.
mine looks super distorted. Had to rescale every section, but looks pretty good after that. Great tutorial!
Thanks, but you skipped the part where you can create a path, some of us are total beginners mate, might wanna keep that in mind next time. :)
The problem about max is it's really akward spline tools. It forces you to use external software such as Adobe illustrator.
@marioorange Hmm... try selecting the shape, convert it to an editable spline, then use either segment or spline selection to select the whole shape and rotate it 180 degrees in whichever direction makes it follow the path in the way you want it to.
Second answer: No they don't need to be vertical
Yes it will. The process is pretty much identical.
@Kittykatboy Also, the complexity of the spline objects used to loft will effect the poly count, especially if you are transitioning between a complex spline to a simple one and vice versa

hi from greece
all your tutorials really helpful n easy to learn. thank you very much n keep active giving 3ds max tutorials. :D
Love you brother ....
Excellent tutorial. Thanks.
2020 now and never used loft before xD its amazing and fast tool!
The best modeling without the "convert to editable poly" disturbing thing
@microracer9 it started as a spline circle then it was reshaped to its star like shape
Hello sir you maded a screw driver so how we put a nice texture
Hi, i get stuck in the 40% part...and how to create the holder shape?? Please help, thanks ya.
Hi,
Create 1 star and 2 circles. 1st circle bigger than the second. Edit into spline your star and attach it with the circles. Use boolean to substract the circle with the star to trim the heads of the 2nd circle to trim the inner side of the star.
Excellent video. Thank you.
great tutorial.
excellent tutorial ty for that, it was delivered very clearly
please try a plus screw drivier, how to give the depth in the knob?
Why when I took the method of : selecting the line + pressing loft + path 00 + pressing get started + clicking on the circle. It started a new cylinder not a cylinder on the line ????

+Rituparna hoymoy Just create a star then go into modify and change radius 1 and radius 2 and you can change the points of the star also :)
Thank you very much for your tutorial
Great tutorial. Thanks

Thanks, great tutorial.
thanks for the tutorial man
best tutorial! thanks

very good work thanks
Thanks so much for this.

nice tutorial:) helped me alot
How do you make the end of the handle rounded? I think it would look better if it were rounded, like a semi-sphere.
Start with a very small-radius circle shape at 0% to normal handle circle shape at say 5% ;-)
@marioorange Unfortunately, I don't know anything about autocad or how 3dsMax and autocad work together but... If I were to take a wild guess, I would say try to ad a bevel or an extrude modifier to it after you detached the pieces. Sorry I could be more help

Thank you very much
You are showing this such a simple, but I can't repeat - am I Down?
thank u very much. good tutorial
please help me, when i select the loft modifier to correct the twist and i click on the shape, i cannot select the last shape in the model (when i make a rectangle selection, nothing happens) i'm using 3ds mask 2015 by the way
the same thing happen to me!

Thanks Man!
Where do I get the second 2D spline object from? Dumb question I know but I'm a beginner beginner.
thanks for the tutorial ... i try to make a loft but the my shape doesnt follow the path ... isnt that weird .. ? .. it follows the path but in mirror !!! why ?
second question : do the shapes must be vertical to the path ?
thanks from mario
Very cool!
I like how you don't actually mention how to create the shapes to use.
loft is extruding to a path?
@DudelyPro
one more question ... tuff question :) i warned you!
if i import an volume from autocad a complex volume maybe !... how can i manage it and put segments (lenght, height etc) so after i can detach them and use them so i can apply materials . and these segments can i have them at a specific distance or manupulate them at my will .... :) tuff questions :) for tuff guys :):):):))

How to modeling semisphere on end on end of skrewdriver ?
Great! Thanks!

You are very welcome :)
wow....thanks
Doesn't work well at my end with 2011. If I choose a shape it is just flat.
awesome
great!!
