Anyone that has lived in Albany knows that a few minutes of going through the city doesn’t give the entire picture. It has its nicer areas along with the horrid looking ones like what we saw.
Right. I'm from the capital district and I know albany well. This looks like it's only going thru the worst part. Albany has its 'hood but it's mostly a beautiful well kept city.
Can't even compare it to Hartford? I grew up here, There's rarely a shooting, not like Hartford, and it's not as poor as you think, lots of college students here. The 518 is a special place with its own economy. While the rest of the country is falling into shambles we haven't missed a beat during the planned demmic. Nothing closed, nobody lost work, infact we got busier,we have more jobs then people to work them. Kids come from all over the north east to attend RPI, Union, Suny Albany, Russell Sage and etc. Then they graduare, settle down and don't leave because it's better then where they came from. Not to mention the history here is as old S it gets for this country. YES its expensive to live here compared to most other places, but that's because there's opportunities here. You can still find nice 2 bedrooms here for 800-1000 per month, the minimum wage is around 15 per hour. Now Compare that to Lubbock texas where my mom just recently moved to after living here for almost 50 years. Minimum wage is still 8 bucks an hour, the average 2 bedroom place is around 7-800 a month, and texas is absolutely dead outside the big cities, NY has bustling little towns throughout. Diversity is as good as it gets, there's always tons of things for every age group to do here in every season. They say MN Is land o lakes but I'd bet NY tops them, I have yet to see another place in the US that has more natural lakes streams and rivers. Not to say it's the greatest ever, but I don't think I could ever call another place home as proudly as I do the 518. Oh and BTW Hartford was the first place that let illegal aliens have driver's licenses. Troy NY the city across the river from Albany was the last place to let illegals drive under force by big daddy cummo. Imagine that ? A government with the same sediment as yours...
Ok well for Albany, this person drove through the hood. There is also a business district and residential area with beautiful houses in beautiful neighborhoods.
You did Albany kinda gritty. There’s way more to be shown with community, events, super dope architecture etc. Why’d you pick only that area shown in this video?
I grew up in “western NY” Buffalo and Rochester and I noticed the architecture is similar to that of Cleveland, OH..it’s interesting Albany is on the other side of the state closer to New England and have a lot of the same architecture
True that.. I'm From Albany and the architecture here all the way down the Hudson River to NYC is all the same. Albany,Newburgh and all that... Utica Syracuse Rochester and Buffalo is all Rust belt and Midwestern almost. Even starting in Schenectady I'd say just next to Albany
The Albany New York portion of this video is showing only a small portion in the Southern part of the city. Once you come away from that there is a lot of beauty and amazing architecture to be found in Albany. I know what I'm talking about because I lived in Albany for over 60 years.
You should check out poor parts of the mountain communities in KY, WV, etc. Literally saw a house with a porch that had long ago collapsed, and a 20 foot extension ladder went to the front door. Worked with a bail bondsman for a bit, and have been in some bad areas of Indy/Chicago. Never got as nervous as I was in those "hollers" though. Somehow just knew I was gonna end up buried in someone's backyard 💀💀💀
Dude ya i had to visit my girlfriend at college in Virginia and ended up running out of gas in West Virginia and so i was struggling to find a gas station and i took a wrong turn into this super super inbred village place and it was honestly very hillbilly cannibal vibes. Very scary place
I extensively researched these areas online a few years back. The most deprived and isolated parts seem to be in Eastern Kentucky and its really fascinating tbh.
The city was officially chartered in 1686 under English rule. It became the capital of New York in 1797 following formation of the United States. Albany is one of the oldest surviving settlements of the original British thirteen colonies, and is the longest continuously chartered city in the United States.
Hartford is a dump. It's a food desert with only one big brand supermarket. There's no shopping malls. A single movie theater. No bowling alley. You have to leave the city and find everything out in the suburbs.
It’s okay for what it is but very boring , crimes been skyrocketing but there’s good parts and bad parts in the city. If you need a cheap place for a while then it’s an alright option.
Ok...a few people said Albany isn't bad, or known for violent crime, and brought up Baltimore and Philadelphia as examples of real, large US cities with real violent crime numbers. I feel qualified to speak on this topic. I went to elementary and middle school in the city of Albany, and graduated Lake Clifton High on the eastside of Baltimore. I tried and became addicted to crack in Baltimore. I spent years homeless on the streets of Baltimore. During the 20 years I spent in Baltimore, the average year saw about 290 murders in the city limits spread over about 600,000 citizens: an average of about 48 murders per 100,000 citizens per year. So, yes, Bmore is the REAL CITY. I brought my addiction to Albany, seeking sobriety and respite from the despair in Baltimore's worst areas. I returned in 2017 to an Albany that is far worse off than it was in 1997 when I left. I remember reading that in 1998, there were only 2 homicides in the city. I never heard gunfire in Albany in the 90s. You hear it now while waiting for the bus. City's now averaging 20 murders a year over 95,000 citizens (20 murders per 100,000 citizens per year). And the population is dropping. Clifton Park (the main suburb) has doubled in population, and vacant houses are collapsing in the South End, West Hill, and Arbor Hill. But what I think makes Albany bad is the availability and open acceptance of drugs and drug abuse in public. People smoke stones and fix up on heroin in the bus stop shelters. I remember getting caught hitting a pipe uptown by a cop, who laughed, then said "I'm acting like I didn't see that", and drove away. And the heroin is so popular now. So is the fentanyl. People are dying here from the fentanyl, and because it isn't as visible as gun violence, it's minimized. Another big difference is NYC, and the Chinatown bus. Albany is 2.5 hours from NYC, and tix on the Chinese bus have held at $20 for 20 years. Dealers and drugs are on them buses. And so are people running to Albany, Schenectady, and Troy to escape shit they got into back in "The Town".

There has been 20 murders once ok Hartford has the same amount of people as Albany maybe 10000 more and always doubles the murder rate of Albany and Albany won't hit close to 20 maybe 15
U talk about 2017 well 2016 Albany had 2 murders if u honestly think its bad u never been anywhere. And ease tell me a year they had 20 murders so to average 20 some years have to b more then 20 to come out with an average of 20 and that has never ever happened
U shld préfixe the video by stating that you’re only going between third and lex in Albany.. because u have failed to leave the 8 block hood and actually show what the city is
As a long time resident of Albany, I can say there’s a lot of potential and although it’s still a pure garbage city as of now, they’re working to redevelop it and it’s starting to show
i live in albany, and prior to that, troy ny and reading pa. as an immigrant i dont think these cities are as bad as people make them out to be. love your work man!
You are right. I pointed out the shooting location, and unfortunately those neighborhoods in the vid are plagued with crime, drugs, and absentee landlords, &aging housing. But 90% of Albany is stable, owner occupied, safe, walkable communities.
That's whats happening in Troy. Which is another dead historic city that is now being gentrified. Houses sell for 50-100k get fixed up and listed for 300k+. In neighborhoods you wouldn't want to walk in after dark. Lol Albany is definitely better in comparison. The parts that this video shows is the worst parts of albany.
I live in Albany NY not all of it looks like this but even these areas aren't what you think. Just mind your own business and keep pushing but glad you came to Albany been watching this channel for a while.
They are abandoned or owner neglected buildings. It's to let people know to stay out and for 1st responders and fire dept. To not go in, incase of a fire. They try to sell some for rehab at auctions and give you tax breaks for doing so. So many in this side of Albany. Every city has a hood. Unfortunately Albany is 1/2 hood, a quarter college town ( hoods taken over alot of this) and a quarter middle class neighborhoods. You don't move to albany if u got money that's for sure...those people live In Latham (outside of albany), clifton park erc.
I just pin dropped Albany in numerous places on Google Maps (Street View) and it looked like a very nice city on the whole - mostly nice green and treelined neighbourhoods. I found this area too, and it wasn't bad at all really.
@M3l203 your chattin lil bro i was born in the most dangerous neighborhood in nyc (brownsville Brooklyn) and raised in one of the most dangerous parts of queens (Hollis) so don’t even try that😂I’m not proud of it but i got a lotta stories to tell from the shit I’ve seen🥱
Wow, I live in Albany, saw quite a few of the regular crack holes uptown and downtown (including the crime scene at 1st n Lex). The city doesn't look that bad to me when I'm actually on the sidewalks, but looking at it from the point of view of your lens - Albany is looking bad!
Kinda like a little wake up call. I'm from the capital district and while I know real trouble has been brewing for years I didn't view Albany in THIS light. They're doing a good job giving Albany a Camden NJ vibe, and that shit ain't cute.
It is mainly two sections ( the south end an west hill). Arbor hill does not even look that bad. Personally I would say albany is 65 percent nice an 35% ehh.
In a world of increasing mechanization; automation; post industrialization and manufacturing; and globalization, where are the good jobs for average people to do for a living these days (most of us are average -- no disrespect intended)? Those old fashioned gigs are gone, never to return. Is this the future for the majority of us as we inch forward into the future? These streets were once very livable neighborhoods and communities, not so much anymore as this century seems not to have much need for disposable workers who now live on the edge. Will machines - automation, in general - take over in developed countries?
Those are the a few neighborhoods, Although those streets may show some impoverished settings, there is much more to be shown . Love my city and place I grew up. ❤ ✌🏼
I'm from Hartford area. Driving to Albany in an hour (less than two hours away) to see the streets and the architecture. Looks much different than CT from these Vids.
Hartford is southern New England so architecture going same like Bridgeport, Providence, Worcester, Brockton, Mattpan in Boston. Albany is Mid Atlantic so it going be similar to New Jersey and downstate New York and Allentown PA.
@@RonsmooveTI yes, it was much different than new england. More row homes, much more interesting architecture and felt much bigger than Hartford and Springfield. Beautiful city though. Got WILD at night. Got passed by a vehicle persuit going full throttle though very tight downtown streets.
I'm doing my DNA Genealogy family background and several of my 10th generation grandparents founded Albany and Hartford, when it was indian lands and then they purchased and founded the townships, via the Dutch. (Don't get me started on family taking land from Indians, that really pisses me off) with the Dutch Governor at the time. I am first generation on mothers side to be born and raised in the South, since 1632. Thanks for showing never had the chance to visit.
You're right. Not only that, for the past two years many people from all over the U.S. have migrated here for living and work. Thirty percent of them with children seeking good schools and medical programs for those youth. That being said, this video contradicts the reality. There's going to be good and bad everywhere, including the suburbs. The only difference with the 'burbs' is that the media don't focus on the hardcore 'there'. They shy folks away from that and center on the obvious which is the motto: "Look over there, but don't look over here." As a public figure and historian, I can give many accounts that cover the ENTIRE Capital District. Much of what's been said is surface, but I'm hardcore on facts. Think about it. If Albany is so bad, why are people (from the outskirts) flocking here during festivities and other cultural events? That's a "no-brainer". If Albany is so bad, why are the current newbies complaining that it's dead at night with limited nightlife activity? Those two facts, alone, should joggle the brain about Albany.
@@robertpappas2087 , you can't even compare Albany's West Hill to Detroit or Newburgh. It is a far cry from both cities and there's plenty in the United States that have far worse. If this isn't so, let's be fair and assess beyond Newburgh to Rochester, Buffalo, Utica which is west of us. Troy, which is across the river from us. Kingston and Pougkeepsie which is south of us and not to mention some portions of Glens Falls which is north of us. I'm sure there are other areas within the state. However, on a national platform, we aren't that bad. People wouldn't be coming here if it weren't true...Sadly, people expect more than they can give. Fact.
@@Hazadoor Watervliet is nice and majority of troy is ofcourse troy has its exceptions too. But not all of Albany is bad there are really nice parts to it.
I was born and brought up in Utica, NY (bad enough), then went to grad school in Albany, aka the Capital District (Albany-Schenectady-Troy). Moved South this year. To say that most, if not all Upstate cities are cesspools is an understatement and it's never going to get better, not as long as one party rules and that party is the Democrats. Those who can are moving out of New York in waves. Those who can't will continue to drain the system until it is no longer sustainable. Even Wall Street won't be able to rescue that crappy state. The pool of producers will become smaller and smaller, while the number of takers will become larger until critical mass is reached. I give it about ten more years.
Albany really is not bad I mean it has it bad parts and pretty much you go a few Blocks and it changes again. There are some really great places to eat and see
Soooo not what I pictured during years of "Gilmore Girls". After my first look at Hartford, even lacking yards, I think I have to lean toward Albany. . .

Big tip to all the people that for some reason are looking to move to upstate NY. If you’re looking near Albany, just do averill park, defreetsville, Nassau, or really anywhere that isn’t Troy, Albany, Rensselaer, green island, menands, or cohoes. You’re welcome
In certain areas, of course, but they take that and assume it looks like that in its entirety. Which as a person that’s not even originally from Albany, it’s not the case.
Honestly I would agree; Troy does actually look really sketchy. Statistically speaking Albany's west hill neighborhood is the most violent in the capital district.
Upstate NY is gully. My first time to Albany was an eye opener. I was scared to get out my car. I said he’ll no. Rochester is raggedy too. They don’t play up there. Downstate is more of a comfort zone for me. Still love NY. Been here all my life. But the attitudes suck!! I still want to leave tho
Surprisingly enough alot of parts of CT are hood. New London, Bridgeport, Waterbury, Willimantic, Meriden, even parts of Norwich. No Kensington by any means but not all milk and cookies round here
The point is, why would a country that is government-focused be okay with their state capitol cities be deplorable at all? It's a state capitol. If serving the people was truly the aim, cities with state capitols should be cities that do not have any ghettos truly. But....this is ameri--
Albany has been losing population for decades. Many of the multitudinous and well compensated state employees who work in Albany, will NOT choose to live there, for some reason. We had Cuomo's "Start Up New York" boondoggle, which sought, and failed, to encourage businesses to move to high tax New York, in exchange for temporary relief from those ruinous taxes. Employers, taxpayers and electoral votes continue their decades long trend of fleeing for less taxing states; and New York's bloated, ineffective, expensive, debt laden government still begs the federal government to pay New York's bills. Congratulations on your election, Democrat Governor Hochul!
The creator appears to have something they’d like to say about these cities, but instead, they drive silently through, highlighting some of the neighborhoods that have fallen upon hard times. Both cities have much better to offer than what this creator is showing.
Gun fire damn near every day wer that cop was posted in albany on the sidewalk shots fired man dwn yellow tape second scene jungleeeeeeee...alla-born my second home..
I lived on Clinton Ave up from lex. Back in the 90's . We could sit on the stoop and hear gun fire on lex. It hasn't changed in 27 yrs. I also lived on 3rd around the corner from judson. My apartment had mice running in the ceiling. Sounded like the were playing soccer. I made sure to work hard (had 2 jobs) to get out of the hood and into a home in a middle class neighborhood. Hood is nowhere to raise kids.

Condemned unfit for human habitation and slated to be torn down
I just pin dropped Albany in numerous places on Google Maps (Street View) and it looked like a very nice city on the whole - mostly nice green and treelined neighbourhoods. I found this area too, and it wasn't bad at all really.
What are those white and red X on the homes ?
Condemned houses
And to let people and 1st responders to not go in, in an emergency
Btw, that's it?! That's the only part of Albany you are going to show? Lol
If that's the worst of Hartford CT then it be alright
I don't think so
It's not the worst at all, and it's more live at night.
Hartford has a higher murder rate than Chicago
@M3l203 just did my research and Hartford had its 31st homicide on october 11 2022 it is not that bad at all😂🤦🏽♂️
@M3l203 your chattin lil bro i was born in the most dangerous neighborhood in nyc (brownsville Brooklyn) and raised in one of the most dangerous parts of queens (Hollis) so don’t even try that😂I’m not proud of it but i got a lotta stories to tell from the shit I’ve seen🥱
How old is this

Wow, I live in Albany, saw quite a few of the regular crack holes uptown and downtown (including the crime scene at 1st n Lex). The city doesn't look that bad to me when I'm actually on the sidewalks, but looking at it from the point of view of your lens - Albany is looking bad!
Shit isn’t bad at all
Yes it is...there was a shooting yesterday morning at the same location where we saw the police tape and Mohawk Ambulance in the video (1st n Lex)
@@OwlGreene calm down theres a couple shootings in a year, try baltimore
Kinda like a little wake up call. I'm from the capital district and while I know real trouble has been brewing for years I didn't view Albany in THIS light. They're doing a good job giving Albany a Camden NJ vibe, and that shit ain't cute.
So u show the hood in Albany but not CT??? Albany has nice Neighborhoods as well 🤦🏾♂️
Ayy lets go you came to Albany! I swear it doesnt look this bad though
Yes it does 😂🤣 it just has small pockets of “nice” homes 😂
It is mainly two sections ( the south end an west hill). Arbor hill does not even look that bad. Personally I would say albany is 65 percent nice an 35% ehh.
U didn't really show nothing in Hartford
And yet, this is the country that considers itself exceptional
It is, but not in a good way
cool houses in Hartford
Both capitals. How come captials are always like these, including DC?
Columbus Ohio isn't bad looking
Raleigh NC is on one of best cities in America
Boston, Providence RI, and Concord NH don't look like this
Only Arbor Hill and South End looks like that. Other areas in Albany don’t look like that. Albany actually has nice areas.
Ahhh good ol arbor hill
I'm from Bridgeport, CT. I know people say Bridgeport is bad but compared to Hartford, I rather be in Bridgeport.
I’ve seen Bridgeport, I think I’ll take Hartford!
How could you say "Albany" but only show Arbor Hill or for non locals, one hood?
I used to go to the Jai Alai fronton in Hartford in the early 80's I believe it closed in 1995.
Try Albany ave. In Hartford
He was on Albany Ave...
He didn't go all the way down the ave he only went around Center st
I peeped that hand to hand transaction on side of the street.
This was eye opening for me, Thank you CharlieBo313
This is legit ARBOR HILL AND ONLY ARBOR HILL. This is NOT all of Albany.
You should visit Torrington Connecticut
Nobody wants to go to Torrington. Hartford here
I'm doing my DNA Genealogy family background and several of my 10th generation grandparents founded Albany and Hartford, when it was indian lands and then they purchased and founded the townships, via the Dutch. (Don't get me started on family taking land from Indians, that really pisses me off) with the Dutch Governor at the time. I am first generation on mothers side to be born and raised in the South, since 1632. Thanks for showing never had the chance to visit.
I’ve been living in Albany for two years now and I don’t think it’s that bad
Albany's West Hill neighborhood is pretty bad, statistically speaking, however but not as places like Detroit or Newburgh.
Fact.
So funny this popped up. I live in albany
I live in Albany and 75-80% of it is ghetto
Stop it
@@talkingmoney4499 Nah I stand on what I say
@@dillonbise7125 well at least north albany county is nice Watervliet and troy area im from Watervliet
@@Hazadoor Watervliet is nice and majority of troy is ofcourse troy has its exceptions too. But not all of Albany is bad there are really nice parts to it.
@@dillonbise7125 agreed
I don't understand, what's the point of driving around in circles in the slummy area???
Hit up Waterbury ct I grow up there and let me tell you it changed for the worse
Should do Harrisburg vs Trenton next.
Trenton is worse
Yea Harrisburg isn’t bad
Albany really is not bad I mean it has it bad parts and pretty much you go a few
Blocks and it changes again. There are some really great places to eat and see
Both rough, grim places.
Tht looks like 3rd Ave downtown & now uptown near Lexington Ave
Albany is a big city. These are some of the worse neighborhoods. This is not an accurate representation of Albany as whole.
I'm from Albany it ain't big lol 😂 but I will agree he only showing the crap parts of Schenectady
Soooo not what I pictured during years of "Gilmore Girls". After my first look at Hartford, even lacking yards, I think I have to lean toward Albany. . .
I’m from Albany and this is honestly an awful representation- I wouldn’t be surprised if the same applies to Hartford here.
Go to Hartford’s west end and you’ll find some multi million dollar homes.
@@matrixman7706yep brownstones for days
Just like Syracuse another big swamp city. What a shame.
400 years later you can still see it
Born and raised it has changed
In your video you show the worst parts of these cities I personally have been looking to move to Albany but specifically around the area of the capital and lark st & washington park where this a lot of rejuvination.
Duuh... that's the whole point of the channel. He shows run down inner city areas from different cities. That's what we come here to see.
eh. that area is like a border. you still get trouble there.
@@coreyladson883 like duh but aren't you tired of looking at all the bad areas in a world that we live like today don't you think we know they exist and wouldn't it be nice to actually show a positive side of what we're in today duh

Reminds me of the video I just saw of Paterson New Jersey
What’s your point with this video ? I don’t understand
I love Hartford. Especially the West End, South End (Maple/Franklin Ave), and Downtown.
Big tip to all the people that for some reason are looking to move to upstate NY. If you’re looking near Albany, just do averill park, defreetsville, Nassau, or really anywhere that isn’t Troy, Albany, Rensselaer, green island, menands, or cohoes. You’re welcome
And stay away from Washington County. Outsiders not welcome!😂
U forgot Schenectady Latham

Why did I suddenly think about a remake of The Wire?

What do you expect from a place that refers to burgers as steamed hams?
I wonder if ppl realize the cities shown DO look that bad. You’ve just become so desensitized to it that it looks normal/not bad 🥴
They’ve become desensitized, to them it’s normal. Sadly
In certain areas, of course, but they take that and assume it looks like that in its entirety. Which as a person that’s not even originally from Albany, it’s not the case.
Didn't even show any of the nice beautiful architecture of Albany which it is rich in. Not sure what your point of doing this is but it's flawed.
That neighborhood in Albany you showed: right now it's hit or miss, but someday soon it's going to become a nice neighborhood.
he picked the cracked out area to go to he shouldve went to troy tbh
Honestly I would agree; Troy does actually look really sketchy. Statistically speaking Albany's west hill neighborhood is the most violent in the capital district.
Do you only go to the bad parts of the cities? There so much more to albany
Yeah, upstate just looks like a rundown Southern town.
Surprisingly enough alot of parts of CT are hood. New London, Bridgeport, Waterbury, Willimantic, Meriden, even parts of Norwich. No Kensington by any means but not all milk and cookies round here
Amazing how people keep voting for the same politicians that won’t fix these problems.
All this driving cant be good for your body.
Albanys arbor hill is rough but as a whole Hartford way worse
I just so happen to live in albany
I didn’t know Albany had trenches .
They playing mo3 in Albany 💪🏽
Looks like rundown Chicago illinois
😂 Albany got a lot of asbestos
Funny how you pick a fraction of a city for comparison. Very selective and deceptive.
The creator appears to have something they’d like to say about these cities, but instead, they drive silently through, highlighting some of the neighborhoods that have fallen upon hard times. Both cities have much better to offer than what this creator is showing.
The point of his content is to inform us of the issues these cities face. Don’t watch if you want a travel brochure of your city.
So this is where the phrase “steamed hams” comes from 🤔
Looks like an apocalypse geez
Wow looks like philly
Well i know wherever the greyhound is in albany that fuckin ghetto right there for sure
Gun fire damn near every day wer that cop was posted in albany on the sidewalk shots fired man dwn yellow tape second scene

My apartment had mice running in the ceiling. Sounded like the were playing soccer. I made sure to work hard (had 2 jobs) to get out of the hood and into a home in a middle class neighborhood.
