Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, and British Airways usually have the best captain's announcements in my experiences. Especially love how CX always describes the route they are taking.
I remember as a kid traveling from bfs-mco the captain doing the usual spiel beforehand and then just before turning into the runway, coming over the tannoy with “ have no fear, have no fright, this old birds about to take flight” and then performing a rolling takeoff. Hands down the best announcement I’ve ever heard.
macdondald symble hairline lookin ass It’s actually quite responsive. The -400 is fairly powerful (the -8 a little less so due to engine flat ratings). The cockpit is surprisingly small for its size. All said, I definitely enjoy it!
im thefuckinglizardking That’s a good question! I’ve done New York to Hong Kong; that’s a solid 15 hours. One time I picked up an entire airplane full of Apple iPhones, iPads, MacBook Pros in Central China and flew them across Africa, the Atlantic, and down to Brazil to have them all there in time for the World Cup 2014. That must have been 16+ hours. Definitely some long-hauls over the years!
macdondald symble hairline lookin ass Interestingly, the 747 and the C-5 (my other airplane) are very different, both procedurally and as for the way they handle. I have to mentally shift gears every time I switch back-and-forth between my planes!
I live only 20 minutes away from dulles and my house is perfectly lined up with how the planes go in for landing. It always puts a smile on my face when I see some of the wide bodies like the 777, 787, 747, a380, a330, and a350s. Dulles is such a nice airport to me.
I am hoping Boeing does not kill the program, with only 24 orders still left to fill, I can only hope. I know Fred Smith (FX) said no to the 748F. Boeing killed the 75' and that tank will fly for another 25 years, as long as they are maintained.
I chuckled at the pilot's reference to being punctual. In my experience with Lufthansa and with German European river boats, Germans are always on time! Even if the plane leaves an hour late (due to a bomb threat at the airport) they arrive in the US on time. It takes a major Act of God to make them late, and then they are so apologetic.
Bob Rogers Having lived in Germany for 12 yrs on and off as a military person and a dependent, I can say that Germans are very punctual! I’ve done streetcar, bus and train!

Lufthansa is my go to carrier when I fly to Europe to visit my Sister in ZRH. Since you seemed to enjoy their Business Class, next time try their First Class. My favorite seats are either 1A or 1K which technically put me IN FRONT of the cockpit on the 747. In FRA, there is a separate terminal exclusively for First Class passengers. It’s a wonderful place to unwind/refresh during layovers. Then when it comes time for your onward flight, you are directly transported to your aircraft by chauffeur driven Mercedes or Audi A8 or Porsche. I liken the experience to crack ... once you experience it, you’re hooked! Great review as always Jeb. 😉
I flew the same route four years ago. This video therefore has a special meaning for me from all of your videos. We were in row 85. Too bad that you didn’t have the Jeb scores back then. We enjoyed every minute from the time we arrived at the airport until we arrived in Frankfurt. Lufthansa is in my opinion one of the top notch airlines in the world. Nothing beats the Queen in the sky.
The universal power port on LH 748 biz seats is between the seats, by the floor. You can’t see them from the seat, but they’re right next to your leg when seated. There’s two at each seat pair.
Live TV is one of my favourite in-flight pleasures...so satisfying to be connected to news on-ground, then to turn your head and switch off life, reminded that you're way up high, away from it all as the flight attendant asks you which wine you would like to accompany your main course over the Alps.

I flew from Murica to Central America in a 737. I was just a normal passenger and I was very comfortable. Good amount of space, good food, watched a couple movies, and also got a blanket for comfort. It was a 5 hour flight but I got bored quickly since there was only the sea to look at (the sunset looked beautiful) and I wasn’t interested in the available movie choices. The pilot’s landing was so smooth that I didn’t even realize that there was touch down for a minute. 👏👏👏

Very true! I can’t stand those short regional flights since it’s always very uncomfortable and little amenities, but the ultra long haul flights can be rough too
The problem is that you don’t get much sleep on such a flight, as meals are served about 1.5 hours after take-off and before landing, leaving you with under 5 hours of down time. That isn’t bad if you’re in economy and can’t sleep either way, but not great in business, especially if you need to go straight into the office afterwards. I find the ideal flight time is 11-12 hours.
I've been on a LH 747-8 to Tokyo flying Premium economy and if I remember correctly they had both a power outlet and a usb plug. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
The outlet is for German/Euro plug. Not US friendly. USB is the other option. In Eco part of the screen frame. In BC, hidden in a compartment adjacent to the seat. Not very convenient access.
Flew Business Class on China Airlines 747-400 a few years ago from San Francisco to Bangkok... loved that upper deck, and the Flight attendants were really polite and sweet.....
I’ve been on this flight with my sister when we were 14 years from Dallas to Germany . In business. Probably the best flight we’ve experienced especially for 14 year olds
I was interested in your video because of your seat assignment on the upper deck. I’ve flown on just one 747, American Airlines, in 1971 when the planes were new. My father arranged a special flight for my mother and I so we could fly on the new 747. Our flight originated in San Diego where we had vacationed that summer. As a surprise, he rebooked us to fly into LAX, and continue our trip on the 747. I was a very excited 9 year old then, and was hoping to see the upper deck. I was disappointed when I was turned down since we weren’t 1st class passengers. My mother and I were invited to see the lounge at the rear of the plane which made up for it. These lounges were pretty much first class then, there were several large club chairs arranged in a U formation with mushroom shaped, chrome table lamps between each seat. Against the rear wall was a free standing bar, with a bar tender to take orders. My mom had her usual whiskey-sour, while I had a coke. I was also given an American Airlines Richie Rich comic book, which I still have today. It was an experience I’ll always remember, and will be thankful my dad went out of his way to make a 9 year old me, very happy. If you google “American Airlines 1971 747 lounge” you can see I’m not telling stories. I’m not sure, but I think each 747 lounge was one of a kind, since there seem to be variations to the layout.
Wow, it must have been really cool to fly on one of the original 747s. Especially back then since they were brand new. The upstairs on the original 747s were much different back then. It was just a lounge. Now they are for business and 1st class seating like in this video. But it’s sad that American Airlines retired all of their 747s
@@griffin4173, I remember when my parents were planning this big trip, I was really hoping we’d get to fly on the 747, but since San Diego was a smaller airport, wide bodies weren’t landing there. He had to return home early and get the wheels rolling for his surprise. When my mother and I arrived, I didn’t understand what a connecting flight was, but my mom told me thats what we were doing. When we arrived at the departure gate to continue our flight, that’s when we discovered how we were flying the rest of the way. I was wound up to say the least. I recall there were several “jet bridges” extending from the main ramp. The flight attendants were very friendly, and helpful. The lounge in the back was about as large as our living room back home, only were could see the Grand Canyon below us as we flew over. It was an exciting and thoughtful thing my dad for us, and I’ll always be great full.
There is a universal plug lower down between the 2 seats. I just flew LH on the upper deck of the A380 from JFK to FRA last week. Had much the same to say as you. (Fortunately no seat neighbor). Superb food and extremely good service on board. Probably the best flight I have ever had.
If I'm in business or first class the longer the better if I'm in economy the shorter the better! Flying Lufthansa A380 in five days! I actually wanted to check out this B747-8 because I've been on the A380 and B747-400 before and want to try something new. But I'm sure the A380 will be pretty cool! My one thing I wish Lufthansa would change is to get rid of the 2-2 configuration. If your in business class I feel you should have aisle access and that is one of the big differences between premium economy and business class. I liked Delta's upper deck business class when they flew the 747 I wish they'd try something like that.
My longest flight was from Seoul South Korea to Los Angeles, CA. 15 hours! We took off, I ate, went to sleep. When I woke up after a few hours, we still have 8 hours in the flight!!!!! I started from Chinhae, SK, to Seoul via Pusan. Seoul to LA, then on to Seattle. It was a very very long day!
I flew Lufthansa on one of these things (or similar, anyway, I don't know airplanes at all, but it did have a second floor!) It was also Dulles to Frankfurt. I was in Economy class though. Cramped, and I didn't sleep (I don't think I could've slept even if I'd been in first class because I never sleep in an unfamiliar setting), but the service was amazing. Lufthansa knows hospitality!
This was beautiful! I hope to fly on a 747 one day, also I am planning to go to Japan on Delta, but I know that is a very very long flight! Nice video!
Flew Lufthansa from Denver to Munich and back. Now that, that's a flight that makes use of the time (FYI, they have DEN to Frankfurt as well on an 747, usually the -4). Seats look like what I had on the A340 I took both ways. Wonderful service, and the business lounge in Munich was wonderful, good food for early breakfast. Can't wait for my next flight on them. As far as the power, I recall having one just over my shoulder. Wings? I have a set from 1980-something, they're big and made out of metal!
Just got back from a flight to/from Italy with Lufthansa from Vancouver, Canada. A 350 to Munich (awesome airplane, service, amenities etc....Awesome! Returned on the 747-400, also great everything! Lufthansa pretty much nail it with every experience with them...BTW, Cattle class for me and they are still great!
Great video. That looked like a decent business class flight. It was pretty comparable to when i flew business class on a British airways a380 from LAX to London Heathrow. The A380 is a larger plane and i think it may have had a little bit more personal space, but all in all, it was very comparable. Now, if you ever get the chance, hands down the nicest flight i have ever been on and i hope you get the chance to experience it, is to fly first class on Emerites. I flew first class on an Emirates A380 from Munich to Dubai which is about an 8 hour flight and it was nothing short of amazing! From the food to the service to the actual seat and how comfortable it was, every part of that flight was amazing. Also, when you fly first class on the A380, you are able to take a shower while you are in the air! From Dubai i flew first class on an Emirates 777-300ER to Seattle which is a 15.5-16 hour flight. To start, dubai is Emirates main hub, so i was able to enter the 1st class lounge which was incredible! It had all kinds of premium offerings that ranged from a sit down restaurant that you could order your meal from a menu and had a full waitress staff to serve you, a cigar lounge, massage services, showers, sleeping rooms, multiple bars, buffet style restaurant, etc. Everything about that lounge was top notch. In the first class lounge you are also able to board your departing flight directly from the lounge. Hopefully you will be able to experience a first class flight on emerites and will be able to do a video of your experience. Safe travels!
I’ve flown first class aboard Pan Am from Fort Lauderdale to DFW, from DFW to LAX , and from LAX to Honolulu. Spent a week in Honolulu ( all fantastic!) before leaving to fly to Guam, where I lived for 2 years. The flights were all fantastic, and I was treated like royalty!! However, all the stop overs were exhausting, I think I spent a total of 24 hours flying time, whew!!
I am flying from EWR to Frankfurt on December 28th. I saved up so I could get an upper deck seat. It will be another item off of my bucket list! I am getting more excited the closer I get to the day.
Wow, what a great review! Felt more objective than subjective. Thorough, pleasant, and well produced! Loved the music. Glad you had a great experience. Thanks!
To fly the last of the queen of the skies is something epic and precious, I'm sure you're aware of that you seem to have a soft spot for the type, as does most anyone with even a mild infatuation with aviation.
I live 10 minutes from Dulles Airport, and agree with your comment that the signage looks like that from the Golden Age of travel. I've really become a fan of your videos. Your narration and the detail you provide are outstanding and very helpful.
@@GreenerGrass I think it would be a lot of fun to do a similar type of video with my kids, but don't think I can afford for us to all fly First Class. I don't have that many points, so don't know how I could make that possible. Thoughts?
I love Lufthansa airlines! My husband and I flew with them in November to Budapest from LAX. They were punctual, efficient, and professional. Oh yeah, and the food was great! They even served us ice cream bars an hour before we landed . I can't wait to fly with them again! I ❤️ your trip reports!
I remember a couple years ago I was getting ready to board a united flight to Paris on a 777 from O’Hare and D-ABYF was parked right next to me. It was awesome
Great that your experience was so good. We flew Lufthansa for 12 hours in economy class from San Francisco to Frankfurt & the seats were so hard that we were putting pillows under our bottoms. Swore that I'd never ever fly Lufthansa again.
I watched this video before I took this same flight in business class from IAD-FRA to get an idea what my business class experience would be like. And now I’m watching again just to compare. I did learn when I was in Germany that they do like to be warm because my hotel room was hot too and the locals told me that they like to keep cozy warm.
I agree. Flew Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Orlando on the 747-400 in 2016. 9.5 hour flight. Best food and cabin service I've ever witnessed/had flying. Great airline that I'll look to use wherever I can.
I flew on that 747-8 from Frankfurt back to D.C. a couple years ago. I was on the bottom floor just behind the wing. On the flight to Frankfurt I flew on the 400, and I got an opportunity to go up into the flight deck at the stand. Both flights were pretty enjoyable, despite only being in economy class. Fun fact: the upper deck of a 747-8 is about the same size as a 737! Also, in December, I am going back to Germany on a United 777-200 for Christmas. I'm sure it'll bee an awesome experience.
That captain is an absolute legend. What a fantastic announcement. Very jealous of your experience.

That’s why I prefer first or business classes for long haul flights so that I can sleep comfortably
Lufthansa is one of the top notch airlines for flights to Germany. I fly them over regularly and their customer service cannot be beat. Great video!
I've been on a LH 747-8 to Tokyo flying Premium economy and if I remember correctly they had both a power outlet and a usb plug. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
your right
The outlet is for German/Euro plug.
Oh My Goodness! The Captain! Simon Gruber says! I was waiting for him to give Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson a riddle :)
I’ve been on this flight with my sister when we were 14 years from Dallas to Germany . In business. Probably the best flight we’ve experienced especially for 14 year olds
I think a 10 hours flight is long enough to enjoy your time fully
Lovely video! Absolutely love that captain's announcement 😝
Absolutely LOVE Lufthansa! Great service all around!
7 hours is short? I get bored being on a plane for 1 hour.. I'd die on a 7 hour flight...
In business class.
Yeah my longest flight was 6 hours and that felt like an eternity.
My longest flight was 11 hours, and after 8 hours it got so boring and even painful because at that point the seat cushions felt so hard.
Yeah…idk. Some people love flying. I don’t get it. It’s awful and boring for me. Shorter the better
Jeb is the kind of guy to book a flight, not to go somewhere, but just to fly. I can see why. Flying is so fun especially when you are an avgeek!
You get me!
Jeb Brooks I’m the same way, I love commercial aviation!
Coming from someone with a fear of flying, my ideal flight time is 0h 0m and 0s haha
Turbulence 😬
@@ImTheGOAT12 what’s scary about it?
I'm not scared, just find it veeeeeery boooooring
Take off is best, then just let me off at end of runway thanks 👌
Just remember theres going to be a damn dentist on board too!
Flew upstairs on Lufthansa from Cairo to Frankfurt several times. Loved each trip. Actually wished it was a longer route.
That was awesome!! I’m so jealous
Nice video!
Thanks, even though that will take place in about 5 years XD!!!
cool 747 and to japan with a350 dream booking
Lufthansa's kids' stuff is really cute. I love how they made the iconic & elegant German Lufthansa crane into a lovable comic character for children.
I’m from Germany and I always fly lufthansa
Flew Lufthansa from Denver to Munich and back. Now that, that's a flight that makes use of the time (FYI, they have DEN to Frankfurt as well on an 747, usually the -4). Seats look like what I had on the A340 I took both ways. Wonderful service, and the business lounge in Munich was wonderful, good food for early breakfast. Can't wait for my next flight on them. As far as the power, I recall having one just over my shoulder. Wings? I have a set from 1980-something, they're big and made out of metal!
I am taking a 10 to 11 hour flight from california to france in August. I do not get to sit in first class, yay this should be fun (sarcasm) P.S 2019?
Just got back from a flight to/from Italy with Lufthansa from Vancouver, Canada. A 350 to Munich (awesome airplane, service, amenities etc....Awesome! Returned on the 747-400, also great everything! Lufthansa pretty much nail it with every experience with them...BTW, Cattle class for me and they are still great!
Flight Lengths:
Economy - 8-9 Hours
Premium Eco. - 10-11 Hours
Business - 13 Hours
First - As long as possible haha
Lufthansa's 747 is on my bucket list. Love this video!
I thought I was the only one why thought the flight from the US east coast to Europe is too short.
Good to know they're living up to what you would expect from a 5 Star airline. So not that "furchtbar" after all... ;)
Jeb Brooks My pleasure! Thanks for making this video. 😊
Too bad they discontinued the Concorde. Faster, More seat room, Business class only.
Beautiful airplane, but the windows were tiny, and the seats were not much larger than economy. The cabin noise was also deafening.
Only down side was those seats weren’t fluffy friendly.
I am flying from EWR to Frankfurt on December 28th. I saved up so I could get an upper deck seat. It will be another item off of my bucket list! I am getting more excited the closer I get to the day.
My ideal flight time is a San Francisco to Sydney flight
Wow, what a great review! Felt more objective than subjective. Thorough, pleasant, and well produced! Loved the music. Glad you had a great experience. Thanks!
did you know the 747-8 is the longest plane in the world by distance
What about the antonov 225. It's 84m long. The 747-8 is only 75m.
To fly the last of the queen of the skies is something epic and precious, I'm sure you're aware of that you seem to have a soft spot for the type, as does most anyone with even a mild infatuation with aviation.
My favorite flight length is 2-3 hours since I am always flying economy
I live 10 minutes from Dulles Airport, and agree with your comment that the signage looks like that from the Golden Age of travel.
I've really become a fan of your videos. Your narration and the detail you provide are outstanding and very helpful.
@@GreenerGrass I think it would be a lot of fun to do a similar type of video with my kids, but don't think I can afford for us to all fly First Class. I don't have that many points, so don't know how I could make that possible. Thoughts?
You happens to be at the Dulles airport the same day I was there to head to the Philippines
Best flight I’ve ever had was sardined into a C-130 on a 13 hour flight.......
They are the most memorable I'll give you that lol. Flying from Bosnia back to RAF Brize Norton is a flight I'll never forget lol.
dan o'hagan awesome, it was Bosnia to the states in 2001. I was at camp dobol
What an honor! It's such a shame the 747s are all being put out of service over the next few years hopefully one day I can make this flight
8:38 butterrrrr
Butter in German is Butter ( sounds like BOO - ter, though )
So glad Lufthansa brought back their 747s now that the pandemic has slowed. Hopefully I can fly on one sometime soon
A fit of German efficiency
Love flying in the bubble of a 747. It’s the privacy of a narrow body on a wide body aircraft
that's my kind of mileage run!...
jim foster
I remember a couple years ago I was getting ready to board a united flight to Paris on a 777 from O’Hare and D-ABYF was parked right next to me. It was awesome
Economy: max 6 hours
Business: max 12 hours
First: no limit
Etihad residence: i’d rather live in it
Great that your experience was so good. We flew Lufthansa for 12 hours in economy class from San Francisco to Frankfurt & the seats were so hard that we were putting pillows under our bottoms. Swore that I'd never ever fly Lufthansa again.
The overly-warm cabin alone would ruin the flight for me, honestly
mam362 MUCH prefer a cooler cabin!!
Yes, the cooler air keeps the stink down...face it just because you have money doesn’t mean you practice good hygiene.
I love your videos.....so upbeat and enthusiastic! 🤗
I watched this video before I took this same flight in business class from IAD-FRA to get an idea what my business class experience would be like. And now I’m watching again just to compare. I did learn when I was in Germany that they do like to be warm because my hotel room was hot too and the locals told me that they like to keep cozy warm.
For a aircraft this comfortable, I’d think around 25 hour flight would do for me. I don’t need a lot of luxury but this was top notch.
I agree. Flew Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Orlando on the 747-400 in 2016. 9.5 hour flight. Best food and cabin service I've ever witnessed/had flying. Great airline that I'll look to use wherever I can.
Love the Boeing 747 - always have and probably always will. Looking forward to one day flying on Lufthansa's 747-8! Great video. THANKS!
Love the very light beige scheme in the cockpit.
The Lufthansa flight was Awesome
