So underrated, and one of the more prophetic scifi stories in any medium. Glad to see it getting some love.

The Life And Times of Martha Washington collection has a lot of great commentary for each book from Gibbons! It also collects all the stories printed in Dark Horse Presents in color and their original black & white (altho the b&w is at a reduced size - 4 pages on a page), covers and pinups, and a Gibbons scrapbook section with development sketches & thumbnails. RAD STUFF!

The best edition is the Dark Horse 'Absolute' type edition that collects all the Martha Washigton stories.

Ed, the original Clive Barker version was a story called "The Forbidden" and took place in London and was more about classism. It was the director of the movie who moved it to Cabrini Green.

Such a criminally underrated mini series. Both creators were at their zenith or close to it and the story is incredibly complex. I show the map of the US in issue 4 in my Human Geography class

I miss my original copies of this comic. Been waiting for kayfabe to cover it. Btw Cabrini Green was in Chicago. I've been there, back when i was 19 on tour. The absolute SCARIEST project I've ever "visited," and I'm from NY.

The significance of green: Cabrini, cash, military, medical, rain forest, etc. So good.

Wow, great memories from this time. I was about 15 when this came out and it's around the time when I discovered Eide's and Phantom of the Attic. I was finding one gem after another. What a gluttony of quality there was. Dark Horse was publishing Concrete, Hard Boiled, Flaming Carrot, and Give Me Liberty. Plus, Miracleman was still going strong, as was Grendel, Eightball, and Taboo. What a great time to have youthful enthusiasm for comics!

Jim, the place in China that you referred to was called Kowloon Walled City. A very weird place that wasn't quite Chinese or British territory so it kind of existed on it's own, separate from the laws of either country and was eventually demolished in the mid-1990's.

Dave Gibbons hints (and a hint may be nothing more than a 'wouldn't it be nice if...' aspiration - you could do a whole series on 'never published' comics) in his recent Confabulations that there may be more Martha Washington in the future.

I’ll never forget being in line in Portland Oregon in 1990 for a signing and seeing Frank Miller and Mike Richardson emerge across the street from their car; Miller was wearing a black suit and tshirt with bright red sneakers, which was his uniform for a while. Might be hard to imagine now but Portland felt so off the radar of most folks back then, to have a white hot Miller choose to go to an indie publisher was mind blowing!

Very curious to hear more on the comparisons of how the colouring changes as the issues go on.
A solid example of a collaborative project that was actually able to follow through on all that creative potential - it's wild it's not more widely read. Super glad it's getting some more issues covered by you two!

I'm just waiting for the second trade that is set between the ship leaving earth and then she dies. It's like a star trek series in there.
