I saw the issue immediately with the announcement. Companies have been doing this for a very long time when you start looking. I play Digimon TCG and you have to get two of the new decks each time to get the ideal number of certain cards. MtG same thing.
@@TheOuterCircle one mistake, you said on the video that chainswords are available on the assault marines, but not everyone wants to run assault marines (or pay for a kit of which they will only use some of the sprues), so the chainswords being here makes sense for those that want despoilers without having to buy the assault marines kit, on everything else though i agree that having everything come on groups of 4 is a very scummy way to force people to buy 2+ of these just to kit out a full squad.
The ten extra helmetless heads is my favourite part. Apparently having several in each plastic box and multiple standalone head upgrade kits just isn't enough of a source of extra heads, more were desperately needed in the close combat weapons box. Many more, far more than all but one of the close combat weapons options in the box!
Also there are no shoulder pads with any of these arms. And the power fist and lightning claws are the same weapon so you can't have both only one or the other
2 years late CADtastic half effort. Most people will have converted or BZZZRT. Looking forward to seeing all the Mech LI stuff scaled up for HH though.
They did this with Epic Space Marine through each edition. Reducing the Infantry sprue amounts in the boxes so you never had enough to make the correct stands for full units.
Looks like it is a box to build despoiler squads. Four of each axe/maul is the four models who can take an upgrade in a 20 man squad. Although having done the maths, there isnt enough chainswords and pistols to kit out 20 models either, so maybe not...
As I said on Bando's channel, it's far too little far too late, everyone has either printed everything or bought everything off sellers from Etsy or elsewhere. the Dark Mech is nice so I will look forward to seeing more of those in 1/35(ish) scale, however I will not be paying GW prices for them, so I will be going to my usual recaster, should I break through my backlog. Edited.
Most Space Wolves players (I am one of them) needed huge amounts of power weapons and somethimes flame pistols two years ago. We already have them. I used old marauder axes with no chaos Insignia as my power axes. Many people used dwarf axes. For unit like Jorlund Hunters I needed 8 flamer pistols. That's alone is two box sets. I know people who made entire Grey slayers units with power spears. So... 9-14 of them.
When I'm printing stuff for friends, some of them don't 'get' that they can just ask for all of one type of heavy weapon for a squad (or enough of every heavy weapon type for the squad). They are so used to having to buy stuff they don't want in order to get enough of what they do want.
@@adamkadir3803 One of the most popular legions in the fans eyes not the company. As far as GW is concerned WE, IH, IW, Sa and RG can go fuck themselves. Thats why there are no chainaxes
If they do chainaxes, I'd expect them to be a separate kit. Most players will have no use for them in their legion. Plus, those that do want them likely want more than just a couple.
They should of put the pistols in the tactical box so they didn't have to put each pistol mark in this kit, that would have worked out alot better I feel.
As right as you are, it's just clear this box set is designed to force you to buy multiples - which is different to prev where it forces you to probably buy more than you need. Had they put 4 sprues in the box instead of 2 i.e. 20 chainswords instead of 10 this would be fine. Then again we don't know they price but we all know it will be unaffordable for most anyway.
They are their own worst enemy, I literally just print racks of whatever weapons my mates need because it was so fucking late in release and now purely because it's so anti consumer. Even the whales and the GW loyalists of my community are a bit annoyed at this.
The kit also doesn't have core melee options. No chain axes, no combat shields and one handed bolters. How exactly are we supposed to make grey hunters GW?
I think the funniest part is the slung bolt rifles are right handed as well, meaning you can't use them with any of the melee weapons in the set except the sheathed chainswords or 1 left handed power fist, ruining a pair that could be used for the lightning claws.
100% this, I had the same thought when I saw the box. My first reaction was Awesome! Then I read the bits count and was very annoyed. It cynical the way these have been rolled out. Also, how long has it been since we got plastic marines ? Why was this not a release box its totally boggling how they have released 2.0.
As someone who doesn't care about the table top i love this set, it's so good for making "your own dudes" which is exactly what i wanted from this set. However i do understand your complaint from the TT perspective.
They could have done something smart like modelled chain axes with a seperate fiddly piece to make it a power or chainaxe, instead we got a 30 second job of fafnir rann's axes with the fists filed off
The only reason i can think there in multiples of 4 is because there assuming the squad sergeant is kitted out differently to the rest of the sqaud which is certainly a possibility but i totally agree that they should be in multiples of 5
The example you give with the tank not having all the weapons has kinda already happened With the new Kill Team. The Tempestus Aquilons, the guard jumptroops, have a way to build your captain and pistoleer in such a way you are short a pistol as they share the same part so if you build your captain with powersword the rules require you to have a laspistol but the box doesnt provide that last laspistol. Now this easily fixed yourself with some modelling but like you say they price this as a premium product this shouldnt have happened.
I have currently have MKii and Mkiii (old best version not the new) bolt rifles in slings. I will be printing them along with MKii squads for my night lords so I can mix MKiii and Mkii squads in my Crimson sons 9th company. After I finish my first company thunder hawk. I am all good printer is hard at work
This box set literally just looks like ahhh we don't have anything. What should we do oh just give them a limited amount of weapons that doesn't add up to a squad
I'll wait till melee weapons will be in Battle Group/Starter with new armour mark (like MK III + Special Weapons sprue). I feel like GW runs HH EXACTLY like they did with pre 8th ed 40k.
Just had an epiphany 4 is not a factor of 5 or 10 It is, however, a factor of 20 A Horus Heresy Tactical squad is sold in sets of 20 So if you were to aspire to equip your GW box of marines with power axes Have no fear You only need to buy five of these upgrade sets. Just as Rick Priestly intended.
Man I remember when that 4th edition Tyranid Carnifex dropped and there were so many bits in the box you could basically model multiple several carnifexes from the box if you were happy to do some green stuff work yourself. I couldn't imagine so much value in one box anymore. You can barely build one full squad with the gear you want? that's such a joke
My dude. Yes this only has pistols in multiples of four, but the tactical squad literally has bolt pistols in it. Both in hand and in holsters. You can just use the grenade hands or the other pistols to make up the difference. And that's if you don't mind mixing the pistols, there is 12 bolt pistols in this set This seems perfect for putting together a despoiler squad tbh
It could be good (4xboxes) start for someone building a melee army . And the weapons are 4 , because the squad leader is ment to have a powerfist and a plasma pistol. Plus they could be made with next edition in mind , 1 more year.
They should have been 20 chainsword, pistols and arms in one box just to make Despoilers. Then you could have a box with 10 swords, Axes, and mauls 20 pistols and arms.
considering i started collecting and building when FW still make mkII and where I am at building these armies, this is actually perfect, just the right amount of stuff to finish off almost completed projects. I see it though, they want you to buy multiple kits. But honestly guys.... Conversion World made the best 3rd party bits hand down!
I took one look at this and it was as useless as I expected it would be. The power lances, lightning claws and charnable sabres are the worst offenders definitely. At least this invalidates the utterly rip off despoiler upgrade kits as you get enough pistols and chain swords to cover it. Also, does anyone else think the thunder hammers being two handed makes them basically useless as aren’t they mostly used on terminators and characters?
You're meant to buy the super expensive resin terminator special weapons upgrade kits for your terminator thunder hammers, silly. On a serious note, the weapons are for the wrong hands for the plastic terminators anyway, so some amount of conversion would be need to make these weapons fit termies.
For me as a non Marine player, for me the Meele Weapon set could be a good deal, because i can use them for my Necromunda kitbashes or the random Inquisitors i build.
I don't mind it tbh - on the one hand you definitely make some valid points and it would be more convenient to get 5 of everything - on the other hand I think the easy solution is just do what I did with friends way back in 2nd edition and raid each others' bits boxes and play swapsies. You don't HAVE to buy several of this kit to get that 10-man squad of power mauls, you just need the social skills to interact with a couple of people on the local community who DON'T need those weapons but probably need more of something you have. Also let's be honest one of the good things with Horus Heresy is unlike 40k you don't HAVE to run squads in multiples of 5 anyway. I've seen plenty of vids recommending running say 8-man lascannon squads or odd numbers of special weapons.
@@khamul64 Well, first answer is get more friends hahaha, but seriously for that amount I'd either print 'em or just buy a load of cheap stormcast eternal ones off ebay and hoy em on space marine arms. But you have to admit a 20-man squad with spears is probably an edge use case here. Also I 3D print loads of stuff - I'm literally assembling a Knight Porphyrion on my lunch break here - But the thing is resin is an absolute bugger to work with, especially with tiny weeny little bits, and when I'm building dozens of infantry models it's nice to just have plastic where I can work a lot faster.
@@sonicwingnut I know SW players who made entire blocks of spear armed Slayers just because they look cool. And silly me this requires one handed spears. I on the other hand needed around... 20-30 power axes. This box will never cover that.
I agree, this box is like a nightmare for me, with all the 4 of's and left only pistols... That's terrible. I go third party for all my special weapons. Hell, I go third party for my marines as well. I love the GW sculpts, but its all way to expensive. I can't fathom how new players get in.
This box is fine. Overpriced compared to 3d printing but what isn't? I think the problem lies with how players approach the game. Powergamers will always want all of the most powerful options and enough of them to kit out all of their units. As such, this box isn't ideal. Those approaching the game with a more narrative outlook will more likely be fine with just one box, perhaps even less. The mixture of weapons will tempt (or force, depending on your outlook) to make sergeants, veterans, command squad bodies or maybe even character conversions with a slightly more esoteric look. Honestly, Im looking forward to seeing what I will make from this. The chainswords exist for Despoilers. Why no chainaxes? Who has access to masses of chainaxes? One legion? Two? It may be easier to simply do something with that narrow of an appeal as a resin upgrade pack, unlike the asinine Despoilers pack that FW put out as an apparent placeholder. TL, DR: This isn't perfect for powergamers, it's better for narrative players or people who want Despoilers and fun building projects.
They used to have TWO different resin chainaxe sets. They took them off sale. That's why there should have been chainaxes in this box. If they're not going to have them in this box, they should have kept the resin ones available. Can't have it both ways.
"It's better for narrative players or people who want Despoilers and fun building projects." I think you're conflating being a "narrative player" with "someone building units with whatever the company lets them buy".
I just started to into HH and think this is a great set. Yes I didn't have to wait but making a 20 man Despoiler squad I welcome having a box o bits that allows me to make the troops a little different. Civilwars are messy shits, having mixed looking weapons looks better to me then CloneWars 30k.
@@kristianjensen5877 I suppose you could read it that way. It's not a charitable one, but it could be a read from what I said. However, it does open the door to the reverse being true: that the only reason people are complaining about this kit is because it doesn't't have all the auto-win options.
I always like and appreciate your takes and opinions on this stuff chief. I personally buy HH kits for 40k usage, and with this set, it really seems tailor made for that purpose. So obviously im a little happier than you, however your complaints are very correct and i do agree with you. The chainswords do seem quite silly to have loads of them, perhaps the idea was to be able to supplement 1 box of tactical marines without needing to buy assaults? If it was they didnt use their head much.
The real question is why they didn't just make a full on Despoiler upgrade kit - just 20 chainswords and pistols in a single box at the same price as the special weapons upgrade kit and then stuffed this one full of power weapons. That's what a sensible company would have done.
@@kristianjensen5877 i agree. I like how HH sells upgrade kits, I buy 20 guys in a box and then a cheaper box full of different weapons. It's cheaper than buying 4 60$ boxes by alot. I only wish they'd manage their upgrade sprues better.
Yeah I'm frustrated because of the lack of options available here. I want to have a group of veterans with all power swords or power lances, but I'd have to buy like 5 WHOLE ASS BOXES to fill a 10 man squad. Its insane, so fuck that I'm printing my stuff
This box could have been a lot worse, so much so i was pleasantly surprised by the variety. The criticism on number of parts in 2s and 4s is valid, but as you pointed out GW has done this since forever (want a plasma cannon or lascannon for your Tactical squad? Go buy a Devastator Squad. Want another power sword for your Assault Marines? Buy another squad) and we do have means of sourcing all the missing bits (or all the bits should you wish) from elsewhere
Initially I was super excited but as I thought about the squads I wanted to build I realised it's designed for you to buy 2 sets. It's for 5 man squads with a Sgt armed differently. Fortunately it's a bit too late for me. I've all the vets and command squads I need 🤷🏻♂️
For some odd reason I've misheard the first and understood that maca was teaching bible instead of survival studies. Made think that the HH is really so beyond hope someone would have been pushed to find religion.
Completely correct on all points Macca. Also: "Teaching engineering"? Did you move from running a factory to teaching? Did I miss that update at some point?
The extra bits for Horus Heresy is great. But since it has come out so late, it will likely be a bit pointless. There are lots of 3D printers out there who have been making this stuff for ages.
There isn't any saving those idiots who praise them these days. It's like praising companies selling you 1800 digital credits, when the skin you want is 2000 credits. Imagine that. Imagine thanking them for forcing you to spend more to just get just enough.
I 100% agree that sets need to be functional. Of course we understand that GW wants to make money. But selling upgrades in a really bloody minded way where the number of bits simply doesn't align with the number you need, or making you buy bits you don't want, is really bad business. This box is a particularly bad example, but its the same all over. And when we genuinely can just print, or buy from people who do, and get exactly what we want for cheaper, what possible reason does anyone have to go to GW? I know that our side of the hobby is (in terms of GW profit and loss) not all that big, but they are pushing people towards it simply by refusing to deal fairly.
A Question. I'm looking at starting a Legion force but I want something unique and different. From a lore, thematic, and acceptable view point would it be possible to play Loyal Word Bearers? Like say a few thought that Lorgar turning from the Emperor was unthinkable, he forced the Word Bearers to kneel before him with the sheer power of his mind. Who would ever betray a being of that much power?
@ethanhastings2514 there's a loyal word bearer dreadnought still alive in 40k from the heresy era So with that precedence go nuts, the problem is probably the lack of cool stuff you can get in a list (you probably shouldn't do loyal gal vorbak) Maybe make them an ally? Have a look into the ally chart
You can happily say "yeah my demi company of Word Bearers were off in another part of the galaxy during great Crusade things. They had no idea Lorgar would turn traitor. When they found out they went 'f that man. Big E for me!" And just decided to remain loyalist. Malcador may have sent some agents over to test them/ see if they were truly loyal or merely a Splinter cell embroiled in Lorgar's plot... maybe they had to submit to his authority and become black shields. Whenever you fight another loyalist faction it's because they don't trust you/ there's been a miscommunication/ some Alpha Legion dudes did a shenanigan. World's your oyster. Go nuts 😊
The Word Bearers had DECADES to get rid of the loyalists. To all intents and purposes there weren't any left, and in my opinion they should have stayed Traitor-only in the second edition of the rules, in my opinion it should be explicitly disallowed by the army list just like it was in 1st Ed... ...but that's just my opinion. My Word Bearers are traitors. Your Word Bearers will be... yours. Go nuts.
Agreed the melee boxset could've been a lot more, example the Special Weapons box that they released was ten of each special weapon. For me I mainly would plan on using this due to the fact that I mostly play skirmish sized games, but for full on heresy games this is absolutely stupid. They also make it difficult to get into full blown heresy games due to not having all the squads aviable outside of resin bits (some are upgrades for older kits that are no longer in print). My personal favorite armor mark is also not in the current scale of plastic (mk4 destroyer armor). Legions imperialis has a lot of interesting units that would be nice for the larger scale game, but alas we don't get that option.
I agree with all your points Macca, but it's not like they changed their practices or anything. It was always shitty like this. When I first started around 99-00, my first 40k army was space wolves, do you remember the "long fangs" box they had? 25 years later I see the same shit. I've been doing my own thing for a long time now. They can suck it.
Weren't the _ancient_ devastators literally _one_ of each individual heavy weapon, from what I remember? As in, you'd need four boxes to have a basic full unit of lascannons/heavy bolters/etc? At least you can actually outfit a basic unit of despoilers with this one!
@@joshwenn989 We didn't have to buy units in boxes back then. Boxes usually gave a small discount (eg. 5 guys for the price of 4) though. If you wanted to, you could simply pick up 4 individual guys with ex. lascannons, provided they were in stock (which wasn't always the case).
I enjoy LI. It's a fine game. Me and a mate have been playing it pretty consistently. I am getting started with HH. I will be playing Death Guard in Zone Mortalis. It's a bit of a mess working out what is meant to work. Like the more for DG seems to be they like MK3 armour and breachers. However there are no breacher upgrades for mk 3 and there are no weapon upgrades for mk3. I don't mind because I will print of bits i need for everything but it seems like a big booboo on GWs part
Tbf you can use the left handed power fist with the boltgun. Realistically nobody needs five power weapons, since they are only really going to be on sergeants and officers. Ive never actually seen anybody bother giving them to vets (or even use vets) or despoiler grunts. However i don't really see any justification for not including them in the first place, i also feel like people are ignoring far more important things, they have no one handed bolters or chargers or how the spears and hammers are only two hannded, both of these make equipping officers much harder without doing extra work. You also have things missing like an individual jump pack set.

I saw the issue immediately with the announcement. Companies have been doing this for a very long time when you start looking. I play Digimon TCG and you have to get two of the new decks each time to get the ideal number of certain cards. MtG same thing.
Great points. GW "fans" should demand better, and vote with their hobby dollars.
My issue with the kit is the power swords...who needed more power swords? No one was using the ones we had lol
And a partridge in a pear treeee
I thought of that, or on a sesame seed bun.
@@TheOuterCircle Hell yeah.
@@TheOuterCirclewould you give a review for GreyTide Studios upgrade bits?
@@TheOuterCircle one mistake, you said on the video that chainswords are available on the assault marines, but not everyone wants to run assault marines (or pay for a kit of which they will only use some of the sprues), so the chainswords being here makes sense for those that want despoilers without having to buy the assault marines kit, on everything else though i agree that having everything come on groups of 4 is a very scummy way to force people to buy 2+ of these just to kit out a full squad.
I like the sculpts, but I agree about the numbers. Was really expecting 10 x of each weapon.
100%
Money, that's why. Now you need multiple boxes!
yeah and no Chainaxes for us World Eaters
GW:- Durrr, just buy 2 packs or 3.
I like the weapon set, purely as random bits fodder, however it absolutely it needed to be more, and where in the world are rhe chainaxes?
Right? One of the most popular legions has a rule that gives them free chainaxes, and there still isn't models for them?
@@adamkadir3803 One of the most popular legions in the fans eyes not the company. As far as GW is concerned WE, IH, IW, Sa and RG can go fuck themselves. Thats why there are no chainaxes
If they do chainaxes, I'd expect them to be a separate kit. Most players will have no use for them in their legion. Plus, those that do want them likely want more than just a couple.
I just go to Pop Goes The Monkey for bits. Far wider range
Absolutely agree, and I will 100% be looking elsewhere for my 30k army's weapons.
@@sagacity1071chain axes are not available to every legion, no? Just WE, SoH, NL and SW
I feel like they dont get that people can 3d print
Oh, thank you for these bits, GW, that have been available on Etsy for years!

I like the set it got cool weapons but i get the whole thing it need to be more.
I’ll get them when they come in stock with my recaster
I have currently have MKii and Mkiii (old best version not the new) bolt rifles in slings. I will be printing them along with MKii squads for my night lords so I can mix MKiii and Mkii squads in my Crimson sons 9th company. After I finish my first company thunder hawk. I am all good printer is hard at work
Every time i look at a release and think "ah thats not too bad", I check to see if theres a macka episode about it, then change my mind 😂
I actually think the kit is pretty decent. While obviously more is better, it does well in equipping despoilers.
Well at least we aren't getting a bunch of new tanks.
Just had an epiphany
4 is not a factor of 5 or 10
It is, however, a factor of 20
A Horus Heresy Tactical squad is sold in sets of 20
So if you were to aspire to equip your GW box of marines with power axes
Have no fear
You only need to buy five of these upgrade sets.
And that's if you don't mind mixing the pistols, there is 12 bolt pistols in this set
This seems perfect for putting together a despoiler squad tbh
You deserve what you tolerate.
You just know the thunder hammers and power lances share the same arms...
BACK IN MY DAY, MELEE SETS CAME WITH 10 MELTA BOMBS
It could be good (4xboxes) start for someone building a melee army . And the weapons are 4 , because the squad leader is ment to have a powerfist and a plasma pistol. Plus they could be made with next edition in mind , 1 more year.
They should have been 20 chainsword, pistols and arms in one box just to make Despoilers. Then you could have a box with 10 swords, Axes, and mauls 20 pistols and arms.
I do agree with what is being said here, I thought it would be multiple different melee kits not just one big one.
Honestly, it should have a chain weapon set, so 10 of each so you can out fit a whole squad.
Loser company making awful products with a god tier IP. Need to call it what it is
considering i started collecting and building when FW still make mkII and where I am at building these armies, this is actually perfect, just the right amount of stuff to finish off almost completed projects.
Good video. Thanks for the info
For me as a non Marine player, for me the Meele Weapon set could be a good deal, because i can use them for my Necromunda kitbashes or the random Inquisitors i build.
Oh il'll get it, from my recaster
“Too late, 15 years too late”
😂
Yeah the melee set is to bits and pieces in my opinion
What if I need 20 power spears for whatever reason?
@@khamul64 3d print
@@cloaker2829 but if 3d print them this makes OP argument invalid.
"It's better for narrative players or people who want Despoilers and fun building projects."
I think you're conflating being a "narrative player" with "someone building units with whatever the company lets them buy".
@@BittermanAndy I'm with you on that. Why they aren't available is just weird to me.
Great items in the assault set, just a shame the numbers of them are totally screwed.
I want 10 sheathed chainswords. Guess I'll print em then.

Yes, but you still need 10 pistols for them
There's 12 bolt pistols in different patterns
Real
This box could have been a lot worse, so much so i was pleasantly surprised by the variety. The criticism on number of parts in 2s and 4s is valid, but as you pointed out GW has done this since forever (want a plasma cannon or lascannon for your Tactical squad? Go buy a Devastator Squad. Want another power sword for your Assault Marines? Buy another squad) and we do have means of sourcing all the missing bits (or all the bits should you wish) from elsewhere
They used to sell all of that stuff in blister packs in the store, but moved away from it in 6th edition.
space marine 2 trailer was released at thw same year as hh 2.0
It's a set for the kit basher to have bunch of goodies for their bits box.
I was about to say that this would be a very good box for youtubers like Pete the Wargamer
First thing i thought is where are the other 2 charnable weapon types?
Completely correct on all points Macca.

The extra bits for Horus Heresy is great. But since it has come out so late, it will likely be a bit pointless. There are lots of 3D printers out there who have been making this stuff for ages.
Had similar thoughts of the wepions I was why they couldn't just put this in with the tactical marines or double the wepion count
@ethanhastings2514 there's a loyal word bearer dreadnought still alive in 40k from the heresy era
So with that precedence go nuts, the problem is probably the lack of cool stuff you can get in a list (you probably shouldn't do loyal gal vorbak)
Maybe make them an ally?
Legions imperialis has a lot of interesting units that would be nice for the larger scale game, but alas we don't get that option.
when a set feels bad and i would rather print than buy it,
its not good gw...
@@joshwenn989 yeah basically they were one multi melta, one heavy bolter, one lascannon and one plasma cannon lol.
@@joshwenn989 We didn't have to buy units in boxes back then. Boxes usually gave a small discount (eg. 5 guys for the price of 4) though.

Will you be happy with anything lol
I don't really collect 40k models, I am into 40k for the lore, but the Stans are pretty much the same. Saying customers deserve better when it comes to Models released is akin to saying, "No you specifically said Custodies were MALES all along so please just give me an interesting, well written lore reason why they are females now and that will be fine." the Stans will come out of the woodwork. Star Wars and Dr who and Rings of Power and any IP has their Stan Brigade. Good Video sir! I can see where you are coming from if I collected the figures, I would want more for the money they are asking as well.
Any chance I can take GDT&E or plastic mold engineering classes with you?
Only taught in person here in Oz.
The set is far better than I expected, so I guess I'm more of a cynic than you are.
Predator Macca. Predator is split in two box sets.
That was just idiotic on GWs part. They have a stock crisis and kits like that the opposite of a solution.
