I wish we didn't have to focus on Mommie Dearest. Not only did it critically malign Joan Crawford, it also pretty much destroyed Faye Dunaway. Yet I still see people saying that they believe every word, or worse, that Faye should have won an Oscar. (Be still, my lunch.)
Joan Crawford's first film was in 1925 called Pretty Ladies and her last film was in 1970 Trog. That's a 45 year career amazing. Crawford changed her image as audiences tastes changed from 1920's Flapper to 1930's Shop girl to the 1940's and 1950's Neurotic.
She was so gorgeous as a young woman and so powerful as a mature lady!

Her mythical story is that of one of America's greatest feminist icons of the past century and that of a totally self-made heroine who inspired millions of women throughout her 50-year-long career. Rest in peace and thank you for the memories, you timelessly beautiful woman, you!
Wonderful. When you see clips like this it is easy to see why Joan endured decade after decade. She was never less than compelling to watch.

Crawford was an amazing actress. I love both her and Davis, but if I had to choose, I'd choose her subtle performance over Davis's, whose style I think is more theatrical in a very in-your-face kinda manner. Despite her reinventing herself decade after decade to stay relevant in the movie industry, I think what finally broke Crawford's career was her refusal to grow old (on screen, at least). To Crawford, she is, and will always be, the glamour star she was in the 30s and 40s. I think if she had allowed herself to take more less-glam roles, she'd have achieved more success in her later years. Nonetheless, A Woman's Face, Autumn Leaves, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, Possessed, The Women, Mildred Pierce, etc - this woman's portfolio is nothing short of amazing!
Davis was certainly more technical. I find that boring. Joan's performances felt totally believable, like she slipped the part on like a dress.
Unfortunately, quality character roles for an actress in her sixties were few and far between when Crawford could have played them. I can't think of any less-glam roles that were available in the 1960s that Crawford could have done. Baby Jane and Straight Jacket are very unglamorous roles. She did allow herself to play these type of roles but there just were not good roles for older actresses available. 99% of Crawford's contemporaries had the same problem finding roles, either glamorous or unglamorous. She asked to be considered for the role of Mrs. Robinson but the producer declined.
She died 2 days after Mothers day alone in her apartment with only her long time personal assistant as a companion. She had just learned she had pancreatic cancer and that Christina was writing her book. None of her kids visited or called. She was unable to establish lasting relationships with people and thus substituted the mass appeal of her fans for love. Loosing them too would be devastating. Her family now admits she died of a prescription drug overdose and alcohol.
There is no evidence to support that she knew Christina was writing the book. It is also simply untrue that she didn't establish lasting relationships with people. She had them with many friends. Cukor, Stanwyck, Cesar Romero, Franchot Tone, even Fairbanks Jr and many others, remained her friend.. family relationships can be very different and difficult. All of this stuff you're saying is straight out of gossipy "bios" that are not factual but speculative. I have a friend who is a Crawford scholar and collector, working on a bio, and he will debunk all of this. Since she wasn't that close to her family, why do you cite them as an expert on her cause and manner of death? ??!! 😂

Wonderful tribute to the amazing Joan Crawford, my favourite film star ever. Even though I was 7 when she died. I have many of her films on dvd. She was a fantastic actress, stunningly beautiful.she really was captivating. Thank you for this tribute to the Queen of the silver screen

I'm a huge Kate Bush fan, I saw her at the show in London a few years back. I was ready to laugh when I watched this, but I have to say, you're scene selection and editing to the song's 'emotion' is a genius undertaking.

Do wish some people showed a little more compassion toward Joan & the struggles she encountered yet despite all the odds she became a stunning star & an inspiration . I never bought the grotesque ' Mommie Dearest ' caricature . God Bless you Joan . You are still loved and admired by many.
Me neither. I've always found it so odd how people are so obsessively focused on Joan's private life when it doesn't matter for any other actor, singer, dancer or performer what they're like when they're not performing.

I think that Davis quote was meant as more of an insult to Crawford, whom Davis considered an inferior compared to her stature as 'actress'.
Terrific tribute! I love the opening shot and timing with the still fades!! And 1:51, 2:07, 3:10, 3:28; the silent movie clips and close-ups were amazing! This is suberb! Excellent editing and song choice! Although not a typical Hollywood beauty her acting was brilliant. Her face carried so much expression and you really feel her pain....and that is what acting is all about, being able to move the viewer and draw them in to the story. She had big, round eyes, which ,when she opened them up could make her look a little scary but that just adds to her character imo!

@asongforxx456 Bette was jealous of Joan's beauty but that was only because, if what I have read is correct, Bette was in love with Douglas Fairbanks Jr (I think it was him), and so she was heartbroken when Joan Crawford married him. If this story is true, you can't blame Bette, any woman would have felt the same.

When I was in my 20s, I had the privilege of knowing Joan in her dinal years, and I can honestly tell you that she would have loved and deeply appreciated this tribute, including the song. Question: is the clip of Joan with John Gilbert from "Four Walls" or "Twelve Miles Out," and where on earth did you find it?
Clip is from Twelve Miles Out, 1927. Poor quality copies exist on the Internet.

@asongforxx456 I wasn't sure who the actor was but I knew Bette was jealous of a man Crawford had, which is understandable. Some of the things she said about Crawford were harsh, but Davis was outspoken on everyone and everything, if she didn't like Joan, she wasn't gonna lie about it. Crawford too spoke her mind if she didn't like someone, I have often read things she has said on others and thought equally harsh. Davis is actually quoted in saying she respected Crawford, but didn't like her.
Reportedly, Franchot Tone, was the man they both had their eye on. Franchot was Joan's second hubby.

This is a stunning tribute- brilliant song, and brilliant clips. Joan was very talented and very beautiful for a lot of her life (sometimes she had a bit too much makeup, which made her look scary, but even in Baby Jane I thought she looked lovely)

When you say you knew Joan in her dinal years, what do you mean? And, that's cool that you knew Joan. How did you come to know her?
Your videos are fantastic, but the picture quality looks quite sub par.
As far as acting is concerned, Bette Davis had more range. However, Joan was pretty good herself. Hollywood kinda sucks now.. I find myself watching old film noirs and the TCM channel quite a lot..
Davis as only good from the late 1930s to the early 1940s after that she just repeated herself and did not grow as an actress. Sad waste of talent.
espdemon I wish Joan had tried theater. I think she was so much of a perfectionist that she could not make the leap. There are no retakes in theater. If you make a mistake so be it. As in life itself.
Bette was so sad when Joan died and Bette said of Jaon what a beautiful and Bette was sad why her friend was gone

Joan was also petrified of anything that wasn't the movie camera. It is true that she seems more artificial in interviews, but that was because she was paranoid about making a mistake. Her later acting style seems better for the stage than the screen, but with movies, there are retakes.
