Oh, I see what you mean, but it's actually correct - were as in the past tense of be: We are currently looking for a reliable partner in Austria, and were very impressed when we learned about your company during our research. (We are currently looking ... and were impressed when we learned about ...)

I tell my students to avoid doing that.
