    Hi Mr. Puzzle! In American English, “ball bearing” refers to the type of bearing mechanism that uses metal balls (rather than a roller/rolling bearing or other types of bearings). I’ve also heard the loose metal balls called “ball bearings” because most people think of small steel balls when they hear that phrase. Hope this helps, but honestly, don’t worry too much about perfect terminology. You always do such a good job explaining every puzzle that you solve!

      Very true, technically the balls in a ball bearing are "bearing balls".

      @@Mr.Puzzle Put "pawl clutch" into google and you'll quickly find references to the type of mechanism this is.
      This a variation however as most pawl clutches are used to lock rotation in one direction. When this one lines up it does allow reverse rotation which makes it quite clever.

    12:51 : Ratchet would also be correct, though those are mostly used in tools such as a socket wrench.

    Ball bearings = the noun "bearings" is described by the adjective "ball" to indicate the shape of these specific bearings.
    "Bearing balls" = the noun "balls" is described by the adjective "bearing" indicating what function those specific balls have.
    If you call them "bearings" (noun), then they can be described as "ball bearings".
    If you call them "balls" (noun), then they can be described as "bearing balls".
    Both ways are perfectly correct in English and if people complain then it is because they don't understand the difference between nouns and adjectives.

    • @JasperJanssen

      A single ball is not a bearing. A bearing is an assembly.

    • @TheBoogerJames
      @TheBoogerJames 2 года назад +1

      A ball bearing is a specific type of bearing. These are the balls which are typically part of that type of bearing. Therefore bearing balls is more correct.

      Thing is that you can’t *just* turn one direction, because that locks up the balls inside by friction. So you have to move it back a little to try to turn it. But not too much, because then you move backwards.

      Watching a video is a bit like watching a picture after it was taken.
      Before you take it you focus so much on the item you shoot that you do not see the things around it. After you took the pictue you see a lot of additional stuff you haven't seen before.
      You can imagine it to be about the same when solving a puzzle live on camera. You need to explain what you think and see and this makes it definitely harder to discover all details as when doing it alone.
