Patterns for pirates has a free pattern that is very very high waisted. I loved it. Also, I’ve made the ballet one from simplicity and I love it although… the first time I didn’t use the right fabric. As to the fabrics … surge fabrics has great athletic wear as does Spandex World.
Really cute patterns. Running on a treadmill and running outside are 2 completely different experiences. It's been about 15 years since I've run anywhere but treadmill was so much easier.
Jalie have a good range of activewear patterns. Lauren at G&G has just done a video of new fabric arrivals and there was some lovely activewear fabric, some plain but some beautiful fabric with cranes on called Deco crane which also coordinates with the plain fabric.
Paradise Patterns just put out the Cowrie Kini. The bust cups are supposed to look like cowrie shells. Pretty itty bitty, and I really would love to see you do it in a yellow polka dot!
Karina from Lifting Pins and Needles and Whitney from TomKat Stitchery have made many of the Greenstyle Patterns' patterns. The leggings may have gussets in them but I cannot remember. This company also sells fabrics. The Crafterpreneur has made Edgewater Avenue swimwear patterns. This company has a RUclips channel too. I have not made any athleisure/swimwear at all so I cannot comment on the patterns. Have fun getting back into working out! I agree that looking good in your workout clothes will motivate you to keep doing the thing! Enjoy!
Since you've done quilting, you can easily do gussets. Putting gussets in crotch or underarm seams means better movement, less chaffing, and higher durability. I cannot recommend gussets enough when it comes to active wear or any kind of clothing that will take hard use. As far as support goes, even though you don't want it for leisure wear, such as poolside sun bathing, I highly recommend it for athletic wear. You have ample collagen supporting everything now but exercise can speed up that breakdown. Supporting everything during activity preserves that structure. And can help encourage your body to lift areas that may be thinking about gravity. Those of us who sit for a great part of the day for work know what I mean. Leggings that lift the bum are a godsend. *Tips hat at whomever invented them* The cross front waistband of that one pair is very waist whittling as well as adding extra support to the spine. I look forward to seeing you make that fitted jacket. It had so many style lines and panels! I could see you making it with monstera leaf print, florals, or cobra corsage along with panels of coordinating plain fabrics. I do hope that you make that ballet inspired set. It's so charming and ballet core is a big thing right now. As for your swimming set, 🙏 please, anything but black. You won't wear it and it's not your color. How about something in navy blue? Or a fun print? Even a weird color like zomp is preferable to black for you. One piece suits are standard, but who says you can't swim in a well fitting bikini? The top could be made from any of the sport bra patterns you have and could use the bottoms of a lounge bikini you've already made so you can make that suit work more for you. As you say, "Patterns are expensive. Make them work hard for you." You could also use a lingerie pattern you already own if you wanted a different shape or style. No matter what you make, I look forward to seeing and being inspired by it. I'm positive that it will be delightfully fabulous!
Hi Sian, I’m nearly 83 and I have been line dancing for the last 2 yrs…..am enjoying it very much…..also will get a treadmill….. do have a stationary bike….🚲….am waiting for some wet weather so I can stay indoors in my sewing room….happy Easter….😊🇦🇺
For leggings I'd suggest Apostrophe patterns, you buy pattern once and can generate as many as you want for your measurements whenever they change and for different fabrics and style lines :) They also have active support group.
Can't recommend Greenstyle patterns enough for activewear. The Cavallo leggings are just fabulous - high waist, panels, etc! Fabulous fitting waistbands!
Also, if you’re unsure of what an fba should look like on their, Jalie, patterns you can email them and they’ll actually send you pics and directions for what it should look like.
I wear modest swimwear so it’s just sleeved tops and skirts with leggings built in. I think you will have no trouble making swimwear. I am fitting a shirt at the moment and about to get a new sewing machine for buttonholes. Also gathering supplies for a lightweight hand tailored jacket. I finally have time.
George and Ginger have the ‘switch it up’ bra sets which are brilliant, one set has a basic bra front and the other has a basic back and each has 10 options for really interesting and different fronts and backs to choose from which would work for activewear or swimwear. Good for you getting fitter, I’m sure you’ll be the best dressed person in the room/pool!
I think Sew Me Sunshine do swimwear fabrics? Also... line dancing is a bit of a guilty pleasure: remember doing it 25 years ago (when it was fashionable). Scottish dancing is also good fun (and again you get the steps called).
Good luck on your health adventure. I'm trying to get back in the routine of mine. I don't have an interest in making active wear, but I know some people who love it. The also love made for mermaids and love notions patterns for their workout clothes. I hope you find something that works for you!
5 out of 4 patterns has a few great legging patterns. All her patterns have different rise options, length options, and band options. She also has lots of swimwear patterns and a swimwear class. Also the legging pattern is free.
Ohhh LuLu has some nice patterns, too, including a vintage-esque ruffled set as well. And if you wanted something different, why not hack up the legging pattern (S8424) and color-block it? oh, and COLOR BLOCK IT IN NEON!!! lol And yeah, if I'm running, I'd better be either chasing something important (like a delicious runaway animal) or being chased by something important (something that thinks I'M a delicious runaway animal lol). Either that, or something had better be on fire lol
I made a few swimsuits last year and I'd say it depends what you need from them. I really need a bra in mine and that takes time and patience to get the fit right on. I have neither time nor patience 😂So I have my plain black rtw suit for actual swimming and my fun me makes for beach lounging until I've figured out my perfect fit
I might end up going down that route too as I don't want "I haven't made a swimsuit that I'm happy to be seen in" to be the reason I don't start swimming!
Scuba is not quite the same as neoprene, it's a similar fashion fabric (although neoprene is definitely used in fashion!) Fabric Styles have a great range of it if you are interested :)
Sián suggesting a pattern should better NOT be lined? 😮 What is the world coming to?! 😂 Joke aside, I totally agree that the partial linings under sheer fabrics rarely look good. For active wear, I prefer viscose jersey over cotton but mostly the purpose made engineered fabrics, sports Lycra, microfibres and the likes. I find they move better when I get sweaty (and I do that quite a bit). I wore my new space print Lycra Lago tank for the first time to day and I love it! But most of my exercise wardrobe is bought for the ease of it. I have too many other sewing plans to keep up with my dance schedule. Though I should at some point brave leggings and find the perfect pattern for me. And funnily enough, I just thought what a shame it was that line dancing wasn’t amongst the many styles our sports department offers. Maybe a certain Beyoncé album might change that? ❤
Who even am I?!?!?! Glad you're in the same school of thought on that particular style of lining though! ;) I will probably end buying some to start but making my own really appeals :)
For leggings- will you bring your phone to workouts? Like will you want to listen to your own music? If so find a pattern or alter a pattern to put a phone pocket on the leggings. It's a real game changer. For bikinis- you can use the scuba fabrics. But for getting it a gym pool and swimming laps you are going to need swimwear fabric. The cholrine in the pool water will destroy any other fabric.
1:52 OK I'm gonna be that person… please wear sunscreen! Please don't tan like that. Also please do have a dermatologist do a full body scan on you every year or two because the risk of skin cancer is high and melanoma are too often, fatal. ❤❤❤❤❤
If you like Evie La Luve, she did a collaboration with Tilly and the Buttons and produced the Coralie pattern. It’s a swimsuit or bikini with or without ruffles, low or high back. 💙🧶🌈🍓
Definitely feel running should be reserved for fleeing from danger 😂 lol

Oh wow I remember when you make the black tracksuit with the rainbow stripe. I was in awe of that and it’s still on my ‘to make one day’ list!
Stretch and sew is a vintage brand that do a lot of absolutely beautiful swimwear ❤

I get my swimsuit fabrics from The Fabric Fairy and have always liked them.
excited 😍 I love jogging and swimming 🤩 So I‘m also eager to try and make my own sports wear ☺️ I will learn a lot from you 🤩
It's going to be fun having some "me" active wear for sure!

Steph Sewn here on RUclips has been doing a series on Activewear patterns, fabrics, and tips and tricks if you haven't seen that yet.
Charm patterns has swimsuit patterns! I've always wanted to try them but they look complex!!

I have a scuba knit that I plan to make a winter dress out of. Any suggestions?
I love the batman bra 😂 the style lines of that set is fantastic.
I love the Vogue 8972 for a scuba dress (I have 14 of them!) ;)

Is scuba and neoprene the same thing? From context I think it is? Thanks for the video! I'm not brave enough to try making active wear yet 🤭💜

100% make yourself one. Do the one you think you'll swim in, then if it doesn't work, buy one while you do research lol
