Let’s not forget where the money comes from.. It is we the people propping our own up.. Every penny being allotted outside the United States should be voted on by we the people..Congress does not represent we the people, that ship sailed long ago..

Where I agree that the government has many "Entitlement Programs" I have always considered Social Security as a government "Retirement Program" fully funded by the individual who receives it.

The boomer generation was a massive tide that raised all boats, but what’s it going to be like when the tide goes out? A massive surplus for inheritors or waste and degradation?

This is another really interesting commentary. Thank you for your insights and explaining how things have become so disorganized. One thought that came up for me: The United States is desirable to many seeking a better existence for themselves and their loved ones. With power (and opportunity, wealth, etc.), comes responsibility. Nations, societies, and governments do their best. Governments are run by individuals, and so many individuals don't manage their own lives successfully, so it's no surprise that governments have bad outcomes. In the US, we're fortunate that we have numerous benefit programs, but many take advantage. There's no free lunch, there's a cost to everything, and our leaders need to do better. But if individuals can't balance their own budgets, it's not surprising that our government has difficulty doing so. On a larger scale involving the world's history, it's educational for me to think about these issues. Thanks for this series.

Rome basically became a welfare state later on. Rent and food were supplied by the state if you were a Roman citizen. Prosperity brings about weakness.
