From someone who's mainly used to games with pings, constant location via a small radar or map this stuff is a god send when it comes to reforger, I hope this video blows up as I'm sure this will help so many when playing.
Lol i was litterally explaining that fact to my wife kuz she watched me just roam tf island lmao and its been 10years im out the military im like fuck i gotta learn allover again lmao haha
Use TC 3-25.26 (Map Reading and Land Navigation). It’s a US Army training circular. It’ll teach you how to use a protractor, map and compass. It’s significantly easier to navigate when you get the basics down
Thanks mate, great video! A simple improvement here would be to allow your character to change physical orientation (plus compass) while in the map view (say by using Q and E). Reforger doesn’t allow walking while looking at the map like Arma3 does, but surely this wouldn’t be more realistic not less.
its all well and good that this system of navigation works but there should at least be a sever side option to enable your marker on the map like in arma
I can't even find myself in the map tutorial. I confused Eastings with the right side of the map. Why is the map oriented with East at the top vs North? Plus, the map only goes up to maybe 40 in the tutorial. Is it because it's not a big map? Thanks.
It looks like the compass in the map matches your body's orientation, not your head's orientation. Notice how your character reorients their body at 15:36 and then the map compass heading matches the first person heading. I'll bet taking a small step forward before opening the map will fix this, but hopefully they'll have a proper fix in the future. Thanks for the video, very helpful!
Not sure if most of you guys play on PC or console, or if that really makes a difference on this issue since apparently the mod shop is also accessible to console players, but the size of the compass can be quite irritating. I've noticed that when you're prone the compass appears slightly larger. It's only a fraction but it's enough to make the numbers a bit easier to read. Its not entirely debilitating since you can estimate your bearing at a glance just from where the needle is relative to N,E,S and W, which you know are 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees. But it would be nice for the purpose of precise navigation and taking azimuth readings to not have to literally move in closer to the TV in order to read the bearing before sitting back down. Anyway, apparently its possible to adjust things like compass size either in the mod shop, or by some other mechanism, so that it appears larger. Does anyone here know how to go about doing that for xbox?
Most arma players would be PC. And I'm sure mods will sort out a whole heap of things in the weeks and months to come. Mods are cross platform as well so you can use any on either PC or Xbox.
@@OnlineCombatBN I’m just saying that, yes you may have known that. But someone else attempting this method might not understand. There was landmass to the Northwest indicating that you weren’t on the West coast of the island. So saying ‘I’m on the Westside of the island’ is only assuming after shooting a bearing. It’s not fully confirmed until a grid reference has been established.
i came here looking to see if someone else was going to point that out. its meant to be done as Lat then lon. im pretty sure even the map tutorial in reforger says the same.
@@somebawldy3789 Yeah, I have no idea. Not a console gamer at all. PC only for me! If you want to experience a game like this, PC is really the only way imo.
Playing games like Hell let loose and Arma on console is horrendous, everyone just randomly walks around not knowing what to do then complain about how shit the game is, saying it takes too long to walk to the battlefield. Games like battlefield and cod have held there hands for too long lol
@@OnlineCombatBN Pc is great for those games that’ll never come to console, and mods. but I’ve been gaming since before I could walk, and I prefer console any day over pc. But it all comes down to personal preference. Also I hate how on console no one talks in gamechat anymore. Party chat is much needed but they need a button that flicks you from gamechat to party in a second.
Well, you'd be a little more tactical about navigating, and you'd hope that your team mates would have your back while you were calculating your bearings.
Well, depends man. There are tons of Arma 3 communities that turned off the dots on the map and don't give you a GPS/microDAGR. It's all about the settings
This is annoying, should really be a setting in options. It's a personal preference, shouldnt be forced onto players. Give me back my dot on the map. Im playing a game... leave me alone with rl stuff. REFUNDED!

12 years Australian Army. I got the navigation down pat. This is a game though, so let's keep it simple huh?
Mate, I love this. New to the game and good to hear a soothing Aussie voice! Definitly following for more!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, helped me understand map reading easier than the basic in game tutorial.
Excellent tutorial! Thanks! Hope you follow up with one that describes some of the other lines, symbols, squiggles, etc. on the map.
That's the plan!
@@OnlineCombatBNstill on the plan, or you already did that?
@blackburn1489 I can do more, but I stopped playing reforger due to the shortfalls it had, but since the update I might get back into it.

I just don’t see how not showing your location on the map improves gameplay. I don’t recall this being a thing in Arma 3?
Thanks so much for this, the map navigation tutorial was pretty finicky on console so this helped tons.

How do you put your compass in front of you?
I press K and it shows on my left side.
Is there another key to center it?
From memory, click and drag it.
It baffled me when i first got it and opened the map where am I?

You know you can use your protractor and get the exact azimuth?
To my knowledge there is no protractor in the game. Someone may have created a detailed navigation mod, but I don't know.
Nice tutorial
Trying to get through the tutorial but the game won't let me place a map marker...
It's not Arma 3. If you want map markers you'll have to use a mod to do that.
@OnlineCombatBN the tutorial literally gives me the task of setting a marker at my location and won't continue until I do
Yes sir army sir!
🫤
The West orientation on the compass only means you’re facing West on the island, not that you’re on the West side of the island.
I could see the ocean... I knew I was on the western side of the island when I opened the compass and it indicated I was facing west.... 🤨

Maybe the developers will let us draw lines on the map so we can triangulate our location. At least to know where is our location from the start.
That would enable a resection, which would be handy.

It’s because the northing numbers increase as you go north (lines of latitude) and the eastings numbers increase as you go east (lines of longitude)
