HOLLYWEEK AT PAOAY CHURCH 2024

The historic Paoay Church in Ilocos Sur is not only known for its stunning architecture, but also for its beautiful and solemn Holy Week celebrations. Every year, locals and visitors come together to commemorate the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ in a series of events that include processions, reenactments, and prayer services.
One of the highlights of the Holy Week celebrations at Paoay Church is the Good Friday procession, where a life-sized image of the crucified Christ is paraded through the streets, followed by devotees in mourning attire. The somber mood is palpable as the procession winds its way through the town, with the sound of mournful hymns filling the air.
On Easter Sunday, the mood shifts from sorrow to joy as the church celebrates the resurrection of Christ. Parish founded by Augustinian Missionaries 1593 Cornerstone of church Laid 1704 of convent 1707 of tower 1793 used before completion and kept in Repair by the people under the joint Auspices of the church and the town officials.Inauguration ceremonies 28 February 1896 church damage by the Earthquake 1706 and 1927 Tower used as observation post by katipuneros during the Revolution by Guerrilleros During the Japanese Occupation.
