I descale ever 3-4 months and this process is so difficult to remember I literally have to watch this video every time I do it. If Nespresso is concerned about the aesthetics, why can't they just put a "Descale" button on the side near the back or something? There *has* to be an easier way!

Troubleshooting steps for two common errors from customer service when I called:
    STUCK IN RINSE CYCLE:
    -Descale according to video
-If, like me, your rinse cycle never ends and continues blinking orange, never turning green no matter how many times you refill it, you should hold the lever and button down anyway to make it turn green
-Unplug and plug it back in
-Fill water and make a coffee as usual
DESCALE LIGHT WON'T TURN OFF AFTER DESCALING:
-If, like me, the descale red/green light comes back on after you make a coffee, you need to run descale mode again, but this time with just water, not the descale solution (and not just a regular rinse cycle)
-To do that, turn the machine off by holding the lever down
-Once the machine is off, hold down lever and the button
-Once you see orange light, click the lever one time, and then the button one time (make sure to put a bowl to catch the water)
-If orange light is still flashing when water runs out, fill up tank halfway with water and press button one time
-Press and hold lever and button until light flashes green
-Wait until flashing green light turns steady green (will take about a minute)
-Open head of machine and unplug. Let machine cool down in this position for ten minutes.
-Make another coffee this time using a used capsule and that should complete the ridiculous process!
I now see why Nespresso doesn't just answer the questions in the comments... because the answer is embarrassingly long and complicated for such a prevalent issue!
    Godspeed everyone!

It also doesn't mention WASHING the water tank after running the solution which I think is a great idea. This way, I can check off things as I'm going.

The descaling instructions are WRONG in this video. The video says that after the rinse cycle, light automatically turns green. That does NOT happen. When the light turns a steady orange after the tank is empty, you have to push the lever and button together for 3 seconds to make the light turn green - without thus step you just get stuck with the orange light!

Follow the description from the video, but DO NOT refill the water tray with detergent when you see it almost empty, as many of us did. Just let it simply run empty. Then machine stops by itself. When it stopped, fill the tray with clean water and press the orange blinking button and let the machine run out of clean water and then it stops again. Follow the video description how to get out of Menu mode ( or just press both buttons for 3 sec). You should be done after that. Good luck 😊

The machine need a "rinse" and a "descale" button. I work with IT in my day-job and I never remember these steps, it's way too complicated. And after the descale process has emptied the tank, it's still in a descale mode which I never remember how to get out of. I love the machine overall, and it's extremely user friendly for making different kinds of coffee, just one button and a bar-code on the capsules. However, the maintenance procedures is likely made up by a software engineer with zero understanding of how to make something simple.

    NESPRESSO DESCALING STEPS

Button: is the button on top, circle button.
Lever: is the U-shaped lever you "press up" to open up and eject the old pod. FOR THESE STEPS below, you will only ever be pressing DOWN on the lever, never up!

    Steps:

    - Unplug. Plug back in. Wait for the Orange/Green blinking light. Making sure everyone is at the same starting point of misery.
    - Important: press the Lever down for 3 seconds to TURN OFF the machine. No light action going on at this point...
    - At the same time, press and hold down both Button and Lever at the same time. You should receive as SOLID ORANGE ring! If not, go back and restart these steps...

NOTE: Solid Orange Ring is the maintenance mode... it's from here you will invoke Descaling.
I used 50/50 Water and White Vinegar. Put 14oz water and 14oz White Vinegar in water chamber, stir, attach.

    - At this Solid Orange, with solution ready, press the lever down once!
    - This is where MY instructions come in... Pressing once above causes Solid Orange to turn in to Flashing Orange. You HAVE to press the now-Flashing Orange button ONCE MORE to start the descaling... It will work...

NOTE: If you try to multitask this process with other things, you will f-it-up. Stay close to your machine, and execute these steps I provide, and you are golden. Extended pauses mean you start over. I speak from experience!

So descaling is underway. It starts, then stops, then starts, just monitor the remaining water/mix to know when its turn for you to interact with it, which is what follows below:

Descaling will have a slightly different "click" noise when it detects that it has "finished" processing the descaling brew, and no more fluid is being processed. Once it is done, you are back to Flashing Orange!

    - Grab up the water tank and fill it with water and put it back into the machine. Empty your catch basin, and reposition it for the Rinse Cycle...
    - Now click that Flashing Orange BUTTON once to start the Rinse cycle. Rinse cycle is quicker than Descale.

NOTE: Rinse happens just like Descaling, in that in both cases, the machine detects when "empty water" occurs, and know it needs to go onto the next step. Keep an eye on the remaining rinse water level. Remember, you need to stick with the machine through these steps... don’t let it shut off on you.

When Rise finishes, the button light will go dark for a few seconds, wait, and then it will turn Flashing Orange. THIS IS WHERE EVERYONE GETS HUNG UP ON...

    These next steps bring success:
    - You are a Flashing Orange
    - Hold both Button and Lever (down) for 3 seconds. This takes you to FLASHING GREEN!
    - UNPLUG the machine at this point!
    - Fill the water tank back up with your usual water (Brita)
    - Plug the machine back in.
    - Turn it on as usual by pressing the Button
    - Flashing Green startup button turns Solid Green

Sorry but there is at least one better video on YT I just saw it. Nespresso cust.service walked me through a mock once (sheesh) but the guy from the other video was closer than this one. TOO much extra tips like rinsing the catch tray which really has nothing to do w/the process. A clean person can figure that out on there own. I suggest checking out a few on YT. The guy (after descale & rinse cycle) get you to where you again press lever AND top button to get you back to green.

Thinking i messed it up, i ran the descale a second time with a new packet and the same thing happened! And to add insult to injury, this video does a horrible job explaining any of this. Surely after two cycles its descaled, so how the hell do i make the light go away???

Hi there, we are sorry to hear that the descaling alarm is still showing after descaling has been completed. Please follow the steps below to remove this alarm.
      1. Turn the machine on, so it has the steady half-and-half light.
      2. Open the head of the machine by pushing the lever up to ensure any used capsules are ejected.
      3. Close the head on the machine by pushing the lever down.
      4. Turn off the machine by holding the lever down for 3 seconds.
      5. Empty the cup support and used capsule container.
      6. Add 2-3 inches of water into the water tank.
      7. To enter descaling mode, press and hold both the lever down and the coffee button for 3 seconds, you should get an orange light that blinks once every 2 seconds.
      8. Press the lever down once.
      9. Ensure there is a container underneath to catch the water.
      10. Press the coffee button to start.
      11. Once the machine has stopped, and you have no more water in the water tank, press the coffee button once with no water in (this will make a vibrating noise as there is no water in there, this is normal)
      12. Once this has stopped, and it is back to blinking once every 2 seconds. You can exit the descaling mode by pressing and holding the coffee button and lever down at the same time for 3 seconds.
      13. This will then return to the solid green light.
      14. Wait 10 minutes for the machine to cool down before use.
      Many thanks.

Why does every time I turn the machine off and on, does the machine be perpetually on the descaling mode? This is my fifth time descaling and I'm starting to get sick and tired.
    Help me Nespresso 😢

We're here to help and recommend calling Nespresso directly, 800.562.1465. In the meantime, try the descaling cycle again. It’s important to fill the water tank completely, and run through the descaling cycle with fresh water. It’s also important to be near your machine at the end of the cycle. Press and hold the button and lever down until the green light either becomes steady GREEN or starts blinking GREEN before becoming steady. If the descaling light is still activating after this process, contact us directly.

There are sadists working in Nespresso who want to make your life difficult. I just don't know why can't they make this easier!

One thing to note is that you should descale as soon as the red/green light appears. Putting it off for a few days definitely makes the process more difficult and could possibly cause permanent damage to the machine.
