I agree Nice sucks after walking the GR-5. I was shocked. No more piece and quiet. And all restaurants seem to be shoarma or pizza. And I like to add, that the altitude can play tricks on you. When starting the Alpine stages I would recommend to take it easy, and not try for long distances. After overextending yourself in the first days, I found it very hard to catch my breath again. And I gave up. I continued in 2022 and did not make that mistake. I ended up making 12 to 14 hour hikes in the end without any difficulty.
You’re right, Pepijn! I actually hiked the Dutch part some years ago 😉 but I also noticed that the section of French Alps is often called simply GR5 instead of “section of GR5”, hence the name. I can update the thumbnail to be more specific if you think it’s misleading as it’s definitely not my intention.
As I hiked it together with my boyfriend, for both of us it was 4500 Eur. Not cheap 😅 your budget will depend on the choices along the trip, your location and current gear. For the breakdown of our costs, you can check the guide I wrote about this trip: intothehike.com/gr5-geneva-to-nice/

The GR5 actually starts at Hoek van Holland in the Netherlands, not the Geneva Lake.
