In 2013 a person showed me the PSY video and I was laughing and learned the dance but did not know ANYTHING about of Southern Korea. In 2018 I saw BTS perform Idol on Good Morning America and my mouth dropped. I learned everything about about BTS and every video song, America Hustle, BangTang Bombs, and reactors with BTS. Now I am very interested with Korea culture and have learned some Korea language and learn about the culture through BTS video. They are great ambassadors and great icons.

Now that you have learned about BTS try some other groups as well, EXO, NCT 127, SHinee, there are so many and also the girl groups. Try watching the kdramas too. 100 Days My Prince, Boys Before Flowers, What Happened to Secretary Kim, Your Beautiful, Oh My Venus, Bride of the Century these are all Kdramas with Idols in them but there are so many more. And go on RUclips Caricakes, 2Hearts1Seoul, Adrienne Hill they all live there and have channels so you can see Seoul through them and their channels also Sissel. Have 🤩 fun

As an outsider I don’t understand why exception been given to pianist and Olympic athletes but not been extended to artist and performer who have bring honourable name to the nation, biggest economic pulling factor (record breaking album sales), introducing international fan with K culture and language etc. I think the biases and discrimination against idol are too strong. Why are their efforts not been equally recognised?? Because they are from entertainment industry?? From the way I look it the level of contributions the boys have done are more that enough, I have yet seen any K politicians ever been invited to White House and giving multiple speeches at UN.

I agree with you. Unless its the situation that no one else can be exempted but the truth is, certain groups are being exempted by law. BTS' contribution is no less than those who are allowed to exempt by law so being not exempting them they are not recognising their contribution.

Before you all talk about BTS you must understand this first and
you all need to understand why Korea couldn't become a world power.
After liberation of Korea in 1945, there were over 1Million Japanese who remained in Korea. They changed their Korean names and lived as Koreans, occupying major government posts and harming Korea. We call them pro-Japanese (친일파)force.
Now they're the 3rd generation of Japanese in Korea has penetrated politics, press media, ministers ,governors and various government service etc ,, they're100% back by Japanese gov't. These anti-Korea (pro-Japanese친일파) forces are the main reason why BTS couldn't get the military exemption. The pro-Japanese force has been against the military exemption for BTS because disappearing BTS from public is good for Japan.
Although Korea was liberated in 1945 and eradicate Japanese, the remain cancer cells are growing in Korea and this is the fact, If you ask any Korean they will tell you the same.

Well the Olympic athletes makes sense. They have to train all year round to perform in their sports games. Military would get in the way of that. Kpop Idols can always make music after military with no issue and they can always put out videos (made in advance) to the fans if they are in military..they can record a whole concert in advance online. Athletes cannot do that. They must train hard and be actually present to perform. Also they can’t win games by popularity…they have to win. Kpop Idols can win stuff based off popularity. Lastly, the training they get for the Olympics keeps them really fit and is intense too and they are already directly serving their country in the sports. Their exemption makes sense.

And do not forget that at at least not all will serve in the military force, Suga, Jimin and probably Jin and V are almost warranty to be send to social service given their long lasting injuries, in V case his allergy and Jin because the risk for his joints.
As it is right now maybe the only ones fitted for military training are J-Hope, Namjoon and JK.
And social serving will imply for them to keep their movement freedom and housing but not being allowed to work in their schedules as artists.

It's so typical now that the government is aware of how much money they are losing when BTS is not shoveling in the millions. They wanted to give their answer to this whole issue back in April, and it was postponed yet again. And then BTS took it into their own hands. Their break is their way to say eff you. We all know that in KPop a break/solo careers means male groups are going into military service. That is why Jin during FESTA said he will be the last with solo projects because he will be starting his mil service in December. At this point they should go into military service, just to spite the government.
Which exemtped athlete or musician before BTS had an impact on a global scale? Names? -- Yeah ... right.
BTS already did so much for Korea: Contributing significantly to the GDP. BTS continuously increased tourism to Korea, increased the interest in Korean culture, language and image. Presidential envoys, speakers at the UN. They are the faces of modern Korea, positive, hard working and compassionate.

I really think it - BTS doing service - would make less of an impact that fans think it will. There is so much more to South Korea than just BTS and I'm sure their Government is well aware of that fact. There are other Kpop groups taking the world by storm at the moment - Korean actors are being invited to take part in international roles etc. Everything does not begin and end with BTS 🙄

@@annetterawlings4549 That has been happening since the early 2000s. We had Shinwha, Rain aka Bi, Big Bang, 2NE1 but they did not reach the fame and influence in the West that BTS did and does and believe me they tried. Yes, there will be others now stepping into the breach but BTS got the fanbase because of their music, their lyrics, their whole characters.
Look at the 3rd generation idols and their songs, they look so white washed and perfect and poppy it is a step back into the whole perfect idol culture of the old B3. They might get a following in the US, they might even get a following in Europe and South America, but they never reach the impact on ppl BTS have with their music. Additionally, fanbase wise - there won't be another ARMY. BTS could just sit on stools a whole concert and just sing their songs without dancing and the whole flash and bang of a concert and still ppl would be coming to see them. No disrespect intended here, but which athletes or classical musicians have appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, called to action by world leaders like US President Biden and the United Nations? Was it also estimated that BTS' contribution to Korea's GDP rivals that of Korean Air? That's not just $ per se, but creating jobs, increasing tourism. Would K-gov ever consider grounding an airline? Additionally, the global impact of the BTS Effect seeps into the intangibles. They have uplifted 100s of millions of lives. Globally speaking, Chicago (where I'm at) is a small town. Korean restaurants and markets have popped up in this area rapidly over the past 4 years. Beyond cultural, social, and economical effects, BTS is a Global Treasure. Yes, they started out wanting to sing and dance, and they have sacrificed so much of themselves for 10+ years, but along the way, the world has grown to need them, so they additionally give of themselves bc BTS is a group of dutiful, responsible, respectful human beings. It's astounding how far this young group of men have come, despite obstacles and adversities. For all that BTS has given, the least K-gov and country can do for them is, "Thank you for your love and service to your country. Please keep the 18 months for yourself and your family." Grounding BTS for an idea in need of re-examining would be a disservice to the country. Negatively impacting the economy would be but the first symptom of an impractical (non)decision.

I don't think the government has quite figured out that by failing to acknowledge BTS's service, they are also failing to appreciate how much they- the government- owe the fanbase. It isn't BTS who buys the albums, votes in award shows, streams music videos, breaks records... learns about Korean food, fashion, culture and language. It's ARMY. International ARMY. HYBE pays the highest entertainment taxes in the country because of ARMY. Korean goods are in demand overseas because of K-pop, and the faces and voices of K-pop are mainly BTS's; it's ARMY that keeps pushing the hallyu wave along. We are, of course, aware that our support of BTS provides benefits to the government as well as to HYBE- and we've been willing to accept that.
Refusing to exempt them is actually quite an insult to BTS and ARMY. It tells us the government is perfectly content to take the money and claim the prestige, but not to recognize the guys' hard work and sacrifices as significant contributions to their country. They're 'only' K-pop, after all, not Olympic athletes or classical musicians, so they haven't accomplished anything worth exempting. It also tells us that all we've accomplished FOR them isn't worth acknowledging; the opinions of Korean citizens who dislike the exemption rank higher than the opinions- and actions- of mere foreign K-pop fans.
So I think there's a very rude awakening on the 2023 horizon for the Korean government. And I think that by the time they realize just what a can of worms they've opened on themselves, it'll be too late to do anything about it. Any government that can't agree on exemption terms in 4 years isn't going to be able to agree on how to reverse a hallyu drought before it does irreparable damage to the country. ARMY won't stop supporting BTS, but supporting a group and supporting their country are entirely different things, and the one does not necessarily have anything to do with the other.

I am so glad that you have said this, as I am Canadian. I don't feel it is my place to make a judgement call, but I have put my opinion out there. Politicians are the same all over the world...don't upset the voters or you lose your votes. It seems not one politician has the "parts" to make a decision on their own and want to see where the tally lands after voters have had their say. Then they can side with the popular consensus. As you said though they are not going to touch this subject. What is the expression..."why buy the cow if you can get the milk for free." They are getting what they need from BTS whether as a group of solo artists, so in their eyes why would they need to change the laws. Thing is, they need to look at the numbers that have been so drastically affected by BTS's hiatus. I think thus hiatus is conviently close to Jin enlistment date, so BTS did what they could to soften all the press regarding this subject. They asked their ARMY to wait patiently while they work on themselves, which they definitely need and deserve the break, but then they can pump out a lot of content until enlistment time. They go do the duty as the amazing men they are and return as incredible rested men who will delight their fans as always. I do believe they will enlist together do they can have each others backs when in the military. Some other k-pop Idols spoke up about the kind of treatment they got. BTS always protect each other and that is what I think they will do. This also minimizes the time they are away from fans and keeps them whole. They have said they "aren't BTS without all seven of them and ARMY".

Thank you for your clear logical discussion about BTS and Korea’s mandatory enlistment. I’m not Korean but I’m now extremely interested in all things Korean as a result of listening to BTS. Surely acting as ambassadors for your country means you are contributing meaningfully and positively to your country’s international standing politically and culturally. Plus their amazing groundbreaking records on overseas music charts etc which also highlights Korean K-pop culture and the fact that they contribute 0.3% to the Korean economy are reasons enough to be exempted I would have thought. I do not know of any person who has been exempted who has contributed as much as BTS has. A good politician drives policy not governs by committee.

Another thing too that many have not touched on as a scenario is if a war breaks out & S.Korea would need to be involved. If BTS was exempted, perhaps they would be out of harm's way. However, if that hypothetical war breaks out when BTS (any or all of the members) is serving, what then? Would they be ushered out of harm's way & stay at HQ, or would they be forced to be out in the field when EVERY soldier is required, including those at boot camp? What about volunteering to be out in the field instead of a military desk job? The Ukranian war is a big example that a war can break out any time when least expected. Russia is near South Korea, but North Korea is even closer. Those are 2 ticking time bombs & one of them had already blown up. The Russo-Ukrainian war actually started around 2014 & was ongoing, with a bit of peace & hibernation inbetween, until it woke up this year. The North & South Korean conflict has been going on since the 1950's, which turned into a cold war, but just one misstep & that can blow up as well. And it's not just those 2 scenarios. There are other world conflicts that we cannot even forecast. Also think about an extreme worst-case scenario where BTS is sent to a ground zero conflict & one of them gets killed. That would be a bad day not only for South Korea but globally. Figuratively & literally, BTS did take a bullet for you. Again though, hypothetical worst-case scenario. Everyone exercises worst-case scenarios in order to be prepared for the worst. We just hope that the best is "yet to come" & not the worst.

So why did you not tell the whole world when & what Putin was going to do exactly 5.2835 years ago before he continued the Russo-Ukranian war at end of February 2022 so that at least everyone was ready to evac? Or why does that mortgage contract require 2 signatures instead of one. Or why do we need a Vice President (in the US) or a chain of command for most governments? Or why do we need to have weather forecasts at all? Or would you rather have airlines not do pre-flight checks & maintenance repairs before an aircraft flight that you're going on? Or why is there a military border between North & South Korea with soldiers standing by? Or why Armageddon begins in anno domini 2061 & no one is doing anything about that skyscraper-sized asteroid heading towards Earth? The reason is you have to prepare for worst-case scenarios & not assume at all. The Y2k bug would have done a lot worse if companies & programmers did not start going through codes at least 5 years prior. To say there won't be a war is like saying that fated Sewol Ferry will be ok on its entire voyage back in 2014. Every situation is considered 50/50, you just have to put faith into it that it will go well. And here's the smoking gun ... the fact that SK even has military conscription is evidence enough that they are preparing for worst case, if & when it happens. As the old saying goes, "To assume is to make an ASS out of U & ME."

If the government refuse to outright exempt BTS I think they should at the very least place them in a public service or ambassadorial/diplomatic role. Instead of a basic military role their skills could be utilized to much greater value to South Korea than running round a field, learning weaponry and doing standard soldier type activities.

Exactly! Still serve their country but in a different way. Personally, I think they could be used to gather attention to some of their less popular charities or most needy charities because ARMY is always there to help. Just saying, philanthropy is one avenue. I heard for Yoongi's birthday one year, ARMY took on this village (forgot what country but S. America) it was an impoverished village that suffered some natural disaster and they didn't have the money to rebuild. Army did though! In fact, the video I saw said they added Yoongi's name to the village name in appreciation. Not to mention when Bighit & BTS donated $1M to BLM, Army matched it. If the Korean govt was smart, they're already using, and taking advantage of BTS for their purpose...they used BTS to ensure they get the World Expo in 2030! So the Korean govt is not stupid, they know BTS is valuable to them, and they're afraid of public opinion. So take advantage of them in philanthropic ways that benefit their country.

Have these exempt citizens been recognized and given awards for their accomplishments world wide? Have these Korean exempt citizens brought in as much money to S. Korea as BTS have? I just want S. Korea to be fair. Athletes, musicians, why not BTS? The South Korean government should pass a law to exempt BTS from military service and to thank them for their dedication and hard work globally and world wide. Take a poll! Shame on the government for not making this decision sooner. How can the members plan their lives not knowing whether they are exempt or not? Well....now that they've decided to work on solo projects, IMO, they've helped the govt to make the decision to make them enlist. I get the suggestion of doing 3 months at a time, but do Korean corporations 'hold' their jobs for them each time they would go away? TBH, I wish, if they have to go, they would have all gone together during the pandemic. It might have provided them the 'break' they needed and maybe they could have come back as a group. But again, the govt. was wrong for not making a decision sooner. Meanwhile, I am biased as I'm still shocked that the former President was 'pardoned' after only 4 years in prison (Sewol) by the same President who appointed BTS as ambassadors. They never asked to be ambassadors of Seoul or the faces of Korea but has taken on the responsibility beautifully. I do not like how the government has kept stringing them along for so long without a decision. The government takes pride in the boost of economy due to the money BTS brings into Korea but they can’t get military exemption is ridiculous. I also agree that a system should be created for pop stars if the ever reach BTS status in the future to be exempt for the military. All eyes are on South Korea’s entertainment now because of BTS. 1-because there are so many kpop idols and it’ll get worse when they (BTS)get exemptions because many boys will all want to take that advantage and join the industry.
2.The government fears to lose a lot of money because they know even though they try to pretend that BTS has a huge influence on their economy. They fear to lose investors(remember the loss because of hiatus)
3.They fear to be responsible for whatever may happen to the boys Incase they enlist.Remember these boys have so many enemies inside SK and the music industry.

Their faves did go out of the picture when they entered the military, so they want BTS to do and experience the same. BTS is on a break I don't know why others still cry about it. BTS has done much more than other athletes have done for Korea, they should be exempted. But the government doesn't want to be in a hot seat, so they can't decide about it. They know how much BTS contributed to Korea but can't still favor BTS because some others who have experienced it will rant and say it's unfair. How was it unjust if you weight the things BTS have done for the country versus the things others have done in their career? The difference is so apparent. BTS did so much more for Korea. Before I watch this video I'm gonna share what I think, and then edit the comment.
The way Korean politicians have been handling this, president Yoon's bs about "we can't make the decision, we are watching people's reaction" has been absolutely ridiciouls and embarrassing, given that thanks to bts there's tens of millions of adult foreigners who are watching. People are making their own opinions, which weren't great already in the west, given the fascism, queerphobia and the fact that women are being stripped of their rights, despite their disadvantage. The whole thing is absolutely idiotic, not doing everything they can to be in bts' good graces and trying to keep them comfortable and active for as long as they can. Instead of kissing the floor they step on, they handled this situation in a way that made them so tired they had to go on an indefinite hiatus. Tiredness also caused by political responsibilities that should have not be theirs. Being the face of the country which they made popular, with all the pressure that it comes with, and then being treated like trash. Foreigners think of bts when they hear SK, they probably barely know who the president is. But when bts will be sent to serve like they haven't done enough, adults will know that country's gov as absurd and idiotic and nothing more. What's coming for SK's economy is fully deserved.

I wonder what will happen when the 'event horizon' hits and it requires 100%+ of the male population to enlist, to fulfil the number of active-duty soldiers required by law.
In other words, the whole military situation is long overdue for a serious overhaul (not the least, the 'mandatory' aspect...make it voluntary, and give the enlistees some real opportunities and incentives for signing up...) but the left hand don't know what the right hand is doing. And all this passing the hot potato off to someone else to juggle means nothing will be solved.
From what you say, it looks like the Assembly is finally trying to back off from the total exempt/no exempt extremes and come up with some compromise about reducing service or granting further postponement for significant contributors. But they've left it very late.

Since it is mandatory, I'm surprised that BigHit/Hybe has not planned ahead for their either their enlistment as a group or one at a time instead of waiting like sitting ducks. They could have created content that could be released while they are in service. The pandemic would have been a good time to go in since they could not publicly perform. I also think they should have their pre-military physicals done. If they are anything like the United States, I would think Suga would not be eligible because he has been diagnosed with chronic depression, not to mention had a shoulder injury requiring surgery. V has cholinergic urticaria and relies on medication to control his symptoms which worsen when he gets hot. And then Jin has some bone problems in his hands, and has injured his fingers twice having recent surgery this year. So if they were to apply to the U.S. army they would not pass. When I was married, my ex-husband went to apply but was turned down because a year before He had a suspicious mole removed from the back of his leg electively to avoid pre-cancer or cancer. I was floored this made him ineligible because he was otherwise in top form. Apparently the military did not want to risk him developing cancer and then be responsible for the bill. He had no history of cancer. It was just a benign mole. Had we left it untouched, he would have gotten in. So if the Korean military has the same health standards, some of the BTS members are not eligible. I worry that they may be bullied or mistreated because of their status. I do like your idea of doing military service piece- meal.

I can give you an example of a similar situation from Israel. In Israel we have a mandatory army service for men and women. Of course there are a lot of people who find ways not to serve in the army. But here as well famous people are always in focus when it comes to joining the army. We actually have a very famous model Bar Refaeli who "cheated" the system in order not to serve in the army and keep going with her international modeling career. She married her cousin then told the army that she got married and was release from obligation doing the army service. Right after that she got the divorce and went on with her career. People here were pissed by this SO MUCH. And although she is still a beloved model and a celebrity, the FIRST thing that people will say when they talk about her is the fact that she cheated her way in order not to serve. It always comes up with nearly every discussion about her. And when it comes to discussing whether younger celebrities are going to join the army she is always brought up as a "bad" example. And celebs in Israel learned their lesson very well. They all join the army and do their time. Although here we have a lot of different opportunities and accommodations for nearly any case. Celebrities usually join army music bands/orchestra/theatre. Top sportsmen get to do really easy jobs like being a secretary for someone and they only come for several hours a week so most of the time they can keep training. Anyway in my opinion BTS should do the army service. It would be great if the army could find a more suitable role for them. But if they don't well, in several years who knows, a new generation might go crazy over other band but the public will always remember that they didn't do the army. Although maybe for korean society that could actually pass, I'm sure the mentality is quite different there.

Conscription was very unpopular. We had a young, very successful pop star called Normie Rowe. He was "conscripted" as a public relations ploy by the Australian Army (no-one else with his birth date was conscripted) and served his time in Vietnam. It destroyed his career. He did manage to stay in the music industry because he was very talented, but it was never the same for him.

Imo 2 years of military service is extremely long period of time for a regular citizen just to learn the basic training, we have mandatory military service in Turkey as well but it's 12 months at most and also there is an option to pay money to reduce it down to 3 mo. Korea could consider adopting a similar way, 3 or 6 months of service would have an easy impact on kpop artists lives and careers

The explanation about your machine experience was hilarious!! So well described! Most times it happens that way!! Nevertheless, it made me laugh!
About BTS military exemption what you said is so understandable! If they got a training worth while, if they really practiced and learned and were awarded something that would stimulate and serve them in everyday life, make it worthwhile! Your suggestion relate to housing is excellent. Government authorities should take your suggestion seriously! You would be an excellent advisor!! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!! Keep safe!

The amount of money that BTS' work has generated for the S. Korean economy is not a sentiment. Yes, millions on millions the world over want BTS exempt, but the adverse financial impact is ridiculous. As a professional American I look at this and it just appears to be ludicrous. This just does not make sense. Also, to sit there and say that BTS can be compared to ANYBODY THAT HAS EVER COME OUT OF KOREA CULTURALLY OR IN THE SPORTS ARENA this is also ludicrous. I am nearly 50 years old and beyond BTS I have never known more than a passing item or 2 regarding South Korea. The South Korean government really cannot see this? I'm sorry this is all nonsense. Yes, having them waste 18 months of their lives is a waste of talent, time, international clout, and money. It looks foolish. Simple.

You should talk about the Korea court actually made a ruling back Nov 2018 for Alternative Civilian service for conscientious objectors in S Korea. It’s ground breaking case but came after decades of court battles and tens & thousands of male
citizens having criminal records just for refusing to bear arms and serve in military and the financial, emotional lost on the men and their family suffering.

As I 'm living in a country that has a threatening neighbour just as SouthKorea I do understand why they have that mandatory military service. In my country it is the same and all young men serve in one way or another. I also understand why the government has a hard time of making the decision. I really appreciate the way BTS members have said that they go if they must go. I don't know what's right or wrong but I wish they could pass this call and continue the good work.

In US we have Army Reserve, which means you train on weekends and two weeks every year. It works. But agreed if you already offer exemptions, BTS has earned theirs.

AIl I know is that if it wasn't for BTS, South Korea would not have the arm that it has today in the World. Also, kpop music or any other artists from Korea would've been given a chance or respect in different genres. As a singer, one thing I appreciate so much are the great singing voices, artists, and actors of Korea... something I would have never listened to had it not been for BTS. We are talking $$$$$.

I’m so worried about this. I know Korea is still in danger and I want BTS to be safe and learn to defend themselves but they took a hiatus just to escape the pressure of showbiz and for them going to the military world not be good for them . BTS is very successful and have a huge fan base. However, along with great success there comes a lot of haters too and I’m afraid people would hurt them. I understand the military is not supposed to be a very nice place because you have to act tough to defend yourself properly in case of a new war breaks out but I think they show treat each other with respect, if you understand what I’m trying to say. Well, Portugal hasn’t been at war in a long time. I think the only time we’ve ever been at war was many centuries ago and it was between us and Spain. And the fact we defeated a dictator in the 70s doesn’t really count as war. But we had mandatory military service too but that was to defend our colonies in Africa . My grandfather on my mother’s side had to serve . I can confirm people who went there, had gone bananas. I know a person whose father was so traumatised that he still has nightmares and when it happens, his mother has to get out of bed because he starts punching the air.
And the way he was treated by his superior only made things worse. On one hand, I do want them to be exempted, not necessarily because of economic issues. I don’t understand economics . But more because I’m scared of what it might do for their mental health. But on the other hand, I want them to be prepared to defend themselves just in case.
I don’t know how Yoongi’s shoulder is even after surgery because I doubt it is 100 percent healed though by what Suga says ( correct me if I’m wrong) is getting better
And I’m worried about him physically and mentally . BTS had to go on hiatus because they were pressured so much it was burning them all out. As much as I think military would be good in terms of them being trained to be safe, I think the military is the last thing they need right now. So if I’d have a say in the matter, I’d vote exemption but I’m not Korean so I don’t have a say in the matter but I really hope they’d be exempted for their own health
