I'm learning a little about art every day and Caravaggio is definitely one of the few names I'm prepared to say I know. I find his work irresistibly striking. I'm not surprised to hear how little he could resist striking, lol.
I recently went to Rome for a week, visited the Vatican museums, the Galleria Borghese, the Doria Pamphilj, la Galleria Nazionale, and a million other churches (only in Rome can you walk into a random church and for it to turn out to be San Luigi dei Francesi, complete with three Caravaggio works). I left with the profound feeling that I needed to learn more about art and art history, and I'm very glad I found this channel! A great way to get an introduction- many thanks!
Wow !!!! what a great idea to start this RUclips video channel! Especially in this times of not beeing able to visit a museum in these awful Corona time we live in! You have my full respect and gratitude . Thanks a lot!!
Caravaggio is my all-time favorite. I remember discovering him when I was a kid and being fascinated/terrified by his macabre sensibility. Love chiaroscuro technique. Grazie mille!🎨🖌️❤️
I was in alot of trouble on probation as a kid and i didnt do anything in class an art teacher convinced me to look into him and it switched up everything for me
Wow! First 15 seconds and I'm subbed. Such great content! Thank you for being a great presenter without stealing the show. A perfect mix of nice personality while not trying to be the show stealer. Just a great overall tone to the video! I love channels like these
I thought I knew everything about this true virtuoso and arguably first modern painter. But these fascinating insights and history here only add to incredible story of the great Caravaggio. ...I am a fervent "i Caravaggisti" !!
You know I have spent the weekend listening to various pieces on Caravaggio looking for someone who could express an aspect I found indelible before discovering it here. A pity this piece wasn't longer. With the passing of Sir Roger Scruton I am very fortunate to have stumbled across you. You've earned a sincere and appreciative subscriber. I hope you continue your work.
One of the best educational content available on RUclips & I must congratulate you for being a geat presenter, touch of grace, class & subtle beauty to enhance the art itself
Thank you for your work your writing is mind blowing and incredibly inspiring. I’m trying to cook up my first book-A series of dialogues on the nature of beauty. People like you help me keep the ball rolling and stay true to the mission
Caravaggio is synonymous with chiaroscuro-he utilIzed lighting like a masterful cinematographer (as you alluded to with his influence on Scorsese.) If you love Apocalypse Now, think of the scene in the film where Kurtz is first introduced-how brooding and brilliant the scene is, as Kurtz remains lurking in the dark, until his face is finally disclosed! last anecdote: I once experienced a brilliant scholar named Ryan Grant, lecture on the genius of Caravaggio. The entire audience was comprised of people without any background knowledge of his paintings-people from Tech, philosophy, music, education, and more-all of whom left the lecture room (myself included), with a profound new love for the artwork of Caravaggio.
Hello, I'm really glad I found this channel, the videos are very sophisticated. Could you make one about Christie Brown, David Kakabadze, Shalva Kikodze perhaps?
Y'all have great content here. Nice mix of contemporary artists and the icons. And you're the only other person I've heard pronounce it "Ho-LOF-fer-neez" and not "HOLO-fer-neez." I thought I was the only one! Look forward to more stuff.
Thank you! I’ve heard Holofernes pronounced both ways but now that you mention it, it seems that “HOLO-fernes” is more prominent - gotta work on my ancient name pronunciations! 🤷🏻♀️ Thanks for watching!
Very nice! I became aware of Caravaggio via Derek Jarman's film. Only now, with the support of your informative presentation, does it occur to me how one can see elements of an early harbinger of modern photo-realism
I listen to an audio book about when they found the taking of christ. Amazing book. Really enjoyed the back story then seeing the masterpiece. Great video
Could you imagine a tennis match so intense someone dies?! But seriously just discovered your channel while researching for a horror film where I'm drawing from Caravaggio imagery, thank you for your wonderful insight and research.
If I may offer one thought. Perhaps on your travels you might consider the role of Muse, an inner reality which in the past had been considered, I believe, independent in the creative process. But do painters even have muses? These inner figures I think connect us to our sanity and best values. It's so sad we take not enough from them. And of course, no need to reply.
The old masters just keep getting better, while some of my favorite 20th century artists are starting to look kinda' shabby. You had one observation about how Caravaggio was more honest in his painting than in his life, and while I know what you mean, in another way I'm not sure I agree. Was he dishonest relative to society and its norms, or religious conventions, but honest with himself about himself? Assuming much of what we hear about him is true, his experience might be too much honesty for the public to bear. Just a thought, and I'm sure I'm just saying something a little different to your observation. His paintings are absolutely amazing, timeless, and still fresh.
Fair question! In this case I mean honesty in the moral sense - life was pretty brutal in his day so I’m sure his conduct is more shocking to us now than it was back then.
I cannot express with my vulgar vocabulary how outrageous , magnificent and dark those paints were for me childish eyes , he got something on him , something very neat
@@TheArtTourist yes I noticed afterwards. That's why I suscribed to your channel. Plus you reply to comment. I cant wait to read more of your videos. Thank you for all the work done.

In Roman myth, lyzard was a symbol of death and resurrection. Since lizards shed their skin, they represented rebirth. Boy bitten by the lizard. Bacchus had no original temple and his Roman cult was not established by a great leader from legend. Instead, a single priestess from Campania established his worship in a grove where his followers could practice their rites in secret. In the painting Bacchus as boy was bitten away from beauty and fruit of nature, making him what he is. God not having measure in excesses. God of wine and patron to conquerors governance.
