I liked Cornette's comments. Honest assessment of a tragic situation.
Should be noted for those that don't know that Jim Cornette worked briefly for the Von Erichs in 1985.
@@Bryan8329 true he saw with his own eyes what was going on
Jimmy Cornette doesn't pull any punches. An honest, down to earth kind of man
Who
The Von Erichs are Texas Wrestling Royalty.
I went to school with Ross. Gifted athlete.
In the 80's l lived in North East Texas. l remember Kerry.
Kerry was always my favorite as a kid. Broke my heart when I saw the news that he had taken his life but I also knew, even as a kid, that he was in so much pain after the accident. That's not even counting the tragic loss of family. We had David's memorial dubbed and I cannot tell you how many times I watched those matches and listened to the song about the yellow rose of Texas.
I used to have 5 brothers...Now I'm not even a Brother - Kevin Von Erich
And when he said he was glad when Fritz died...
Whether you believe in the curse stuff is irrelevant, that is so heartbreaking...
We've all suffered loss, we've all had to grieve at point or other, but what that man has gone through is a tale of ultimate survival
He said he was glad his father died because he outlived five of his children loosing them in the worse ways possible then battling brain cancer he didn't want his father to suffer anymore.
If i meet Kevin One day Is want to give him a giant hug or even kiss His feet LOL(sorry if it was out of context). But seriously, he is a great human, a great dad AND Legend, he is a Survivor AND I'm happy that he can be here to talk about That. He Is admirable.
Where are these comments from? What interview?
🤮
I was very touched and inspired by Kevin's bravery and courage. I teared up several times while watching this documentary. However, while it was concluding, I was inspired by Kevin's heart, will, and humility. Thank you Kevin. I respect you immensely.
At this point I paused and bawled my eyes out
I met him in my hometown which is the city of Nazareth in 1985 , it was very big deal for me , in those days they were so big in the Middle East
RIP Kerry
Just going through old footage of the Von Erichs and why am I doing that?! Bcuz the actual movie is finally here 4 years later
I’m surprised someone hasn’t made a movie about the Von Erichs. Although, I’m sure Kevin wouldn’t want to relive all those painful memories.
A documentary type movie on DVD was made on world class already and WWF made a documentary on world class as well. Put them together and you have a lot of information out there already.
There is, Faded Glory The Von Erich Story.
The movie would be a sanitized joke. Kevin acts like he didn't abuse drugs like his brothers did. No way would they dive into Fritz's abuse & overbearing pressure that drove all 4 of his adult sons into early graves.
Actually a director who does arthouse films is set to do one.
Fast forward a couple years later, a movie starring Zac Efron as a Von Erich, is coming out.
What a heavy episode. Deeply moving. Seeing Kevin at the end talk about making it through those years and years of heartbreak made me think about how no matter how bad things might feel, it will always be worth pushing through to the other side.
I just randomly came across your comment but I had to tell you how beautifully conveyed this was. Going through my own personal battle this comment is so helpful.
Kerry Von Erich was an outstanding pro wrestler, and he came into the WWE at the "right time" in mid-1990. He had a natural charisma, and WWE fans took to him as rapidly as his WCCW fans had. His most memorable WWE feud was with Mr. Perfect, Curt Hennig. Von Erich and Hennig were each second generation wrestlers who were close in age, size, and athleticism. They had many great matches together.
Hyped when he won the IC title! Thought it was only a matter of time before he became World champ! But I guess his behavior outside the ring hindered his career
My favorite wrestler as a kid besides the hulkster. Was so happy when he won the belt. I knew he was gonna be a WC....then... didn't happen
Imagine what Kerry could have been without the drugs. Very, very sad.
Curt Henning made the Tornado Punch look like a SERIOUSLY dangerous move, I never forgot the two of them putting on the best show of Summerslam 90 - other than the Tag match between Hart Foundation and Demolition.
I've heard the Von Erich story told so many times, from so many different perspectives. Still tugs at the heart strings nonetheless. Can't even fathom how Kevin came out of all that heartbreak and tragedy to be at peace like he is. It still definitely affects him but it was great seeing him with his two sons and grandchildren.
AMEN
Amen
Amen 🙏 respect from Ireland 🇮🇪 👏
You'd think he was crazy at first glance but look closer into the story and you can tell by watching this that Kevin is just scarred from all that. He's lucky to be alive
In the early 80s the Von Erichs where in many ways bigger then the Cowboys in Dallas
Gee, I would certainly rather watch the Von Erich's than the Cowboys these days. Jerry Jerk-Off Jones needs to go away.
It Takes More Courage to Live Than It Does to Die"
- Kevin Von Erich
Speaks volumes the type of person Kevin is to keep going and living
@@Kas58223but what does that say about his own brothers?
Kerry Von Erich was one of favourite superstars back in the day such a shame R.I.P
I agree. I think that Kerry Von Erich was one of the most "likeable" wrestlers in the history of the business. He's right up there with Jim Duggan and Sting. Very few people have ever said an unkind word about Kerry Von Erich.
I stole your car
Rip ODB
NO ONE but no one conveys a point, an idea, like Jim Cornette. His clips in this were spot on and really drew me into the story. This was a tragedy all around. I remember watching Kerry back in the 80's, just an amazing athlete and talent.
I stole your car
In retrospect,he wasn t that great,he had a great body for the time, but he was soon eclipsed by stronger, bigger more muscular wrestlers that soon made him look small:Vicious,U.Warrior,Barbarian,Warlord,Ron Simmons,Jeep Swanson.
@@giovannisocci8793 your an ass
Cornette was trying to be nice and diplomatic. He wasn't cutting.
Who’s here after The Iron Claw Trailer?
Definitely me. Knew it was based on this story.
Everyone
Yep!
Just saw the Movie. Great movie but specially the ending hit hard when Kevin was talking to his boys.
Not everyone better question who was here before the iron claw and was genuinely ecstatic when they released the iron claw 🙋🏼♂️🙋🏼♂️I actually recommend that you watch this episode before you watch the movie i still feel disappointed they omitted one other brothers suicide but still mentioned their oldest brother who died young
Truly blows my mind that Kevin is still here. If i suffered the loss he has i dont know id even deal with it. Hes a very mentally strong person.
Kevin was really nice when I met him a few years ago
Dark side of Ring has had some good shows so far and I liked every one of them...👍👍👍👍
My very favourite wrestler. The Modern Day Warrior. Rest in Peace, my childhood heroe! will never forget the moment 27, August,1990 when Kerry won IC Championship Belt
Who's here after watching The Iron Claw movie?
As a fan of pro wrestling in the 1980's in Canada, I didn't get to see a whole lot of Von Erich matches but always read about them in the pro-wrestling magazines and the odd wrestling tape that I traded with friends. I've watched quite a few documentaries and watched matches I can find now on RUclips but this show was on a different level. Kevin seems completely at peace and has an almost zen like quality when he's dealt with so much tragedy that would have shattered so many other people. Well done Viceland!
World Class Wrestling could only be viewed by satellite TV during the 80’s. It has some of the greatest names in all of Pro Wrestling. Many fans dint realize but way before many of these wrestlers headed to the WWE in the late 80’s they were already big stars within the industry . Vince McMahon did a great job of hiding the history and accolades of these wrestlers.
@@SillySongs4Everyone2001 thank God for the Legends of World Class on ESPN. I lived in Metro Detroit as a kid and got to see it every day after school at 4PM. I remember seeing the Dingo Warrior well before he became Ultimate. Still loved the team of Maniac Matt Borne and Mad Dog Buzz Sawyer.
Christopher Salsbury For me World Class Wrestling was the best league. The shows were so well done and the production crew was well ahead of their time.
Out of all the episodes this is without a doubt the saddest episode
This was the best episode, so far. Truly devastating. It’s like the whole family went through a war...and nobody came back home. I felt like there wasn’t enough emotional support with the brothers, too much pressure for wrestling and pride for the family legacy.
I didn’t understand why Kevin didn’t take Chris seriously when he said he was going to commit suicide, he knew about the suicide of the other brother. Also how the father was ignorant of the actions of Kerry hugging and telling him he loved him, before he ran out of the house. It really doesn’t make sense, I’m conflicted on what was truly going on with the family relationship. It really made me frustrated on the clear indications on how they told them they were going to kill themselves, then they did nothing to stop them...
VoidX it’s very easy to see things in hindsight that should have seemed obvious but for one reason or other were missed or ignored
Michael Moore Yea, I think it was just ignorance.
VoidX Yeah but we need the whole episode
Sometimes it's easier to lie to yourself then to come to the harsh realization
Drugs
Really! It was good show. Growing up in Texas as a younster, I wondered about the truth of a horrible set of circumstances. I applaud viceland and Jim cornette for truth. Truly sad, indeed
Watch BEHIND THE TITONTRON on the curse of the Von erichs. It goes into so much more detail on the whole story. It's worth a watch buddy.
@@williamschutz4982 that was bunch bs
@@diablo666541 why?
Hope to see the full episode. Love when you guys have pro wrestling on here
You can watch all of the episodes on viceland.com for free with a cable login and I’m pretty sure this one specifically is free for everykne
E60 on ESPN did a great doc about the Von Erichs.
I just saw the Von Erich episode. I enjoyed it and my heart will always still go on to the wonderful Von Erich family. Hopefully the next generation will do great things either being the sons and or daughters of the brothers or the grandchildren. I'll always will cheer for them. I need to see as well matches of them . REST IN PEACE, all Von Erichs! They're all in heaven watching down on their family.
Ironclaw did an amazing job telling their story. Tragic story but beautifully done in my opinion
RIL too all the Fallen von Erich family members
I remember when kerry came to wwf . The Mr Perfect matches were off the hook man . I thought this is AWESOME . He was a great Wrestler and its to bad it all had to end that way . Seems alot of the greats have passed away
Please keep doing these. My favorite RUclips content of 2019
I met kerry von Eric long time ago just like a big happy kid such a nice person r.i.p. .
I met Kevin in my hometown which is the city of Nazareth in 1985 , it was very big deal for me , in those days they were so big in the Middle East
RIP Kerry
Kevin is HANDS DOWN one of the mentally stronger humans ever
This episode almost made me cry. Got to see them when I was a little boy at Cleburne high school. Texas legends.
They are making one right now called The Iron Claw
I grew up watching the Texas tornado every Saturday mornings....my hero's back then
And today….. the trailer for the iron claw movie has came out
Who comes here after watching "The Iron Claw" trailer? Kevin Von Erich should be WCCW Triple Crown Champion as well as Grand Slam Champion.
😂😂😂
If any collectors are interested. My mom was in a relationship with Mike when he passed. And she’s finally ready to part with some items of his like the robes he use to come out in.
Got any sweet t shirts?
@@gutsache7857 I’ll see. Pretty sure it’s just a cpl robes he wore out to the ring
Kerry was my favorite wrestler growing up. He was genuine, and very likeable. He had an incredible look, and if only he had been able to control his demons, he'd be one of the best ever.
As a woman I didn't just like Kerry for his looks as most did. He was a very talented wrestler, and likeable one at that. He wasn't conceited like many others were at that time . Such a shame that he couldn't see the sun through the dark clouds and realize how many people loved and cared for him .
Hmm, I don't know. I don't get the impression that many cared for him. Including his father. By 1993, he was yesterday news, even within his wrestling community. His ex-wife did not want him to return either. He was just drugged out and no one cared any longer.
I'm sure he was a nice guy but get your eyes checked he couldn't wrestle a little bit..look only zero in ring talent..name only. ...just watch his work...hammer fists...not good wrestling
I didn't think there was any family with more tragedy than the Harts....until I heard of the Von Erichs.
Crazy thing is that Stu apparently trained and even named and gave Fritz his wrestling gimmick.
Living in the public spot light like that can be emotionally demanding. public perfection is a recipe for stuff like this.
I recorded this and didn't watch it until the weekend, because I didn't think I could handle it.
I was right.
Cried through most of the episode - and then for another 15 minutes or so afterwards.
There aren't enough tears for that family and what they went through.
Kevin is a testimony to the strength of the human spirit.
PlatinumRoseLady This was quite emotional. The tragedy that family endured was profound. The only thing more profound was Kevin's resolve to muscle through. I'm blown away by him. Makes me want to be a better person; that's for certain!
Jeremy Allen White Was Perfect For This Role.
My Boy LIP Is A Wrestler.
sad, tragic and utterly underestimated talents were the Von Erichs....
The Von Erich family in Texas was treated the way the Hart family was in Canada.
I wonder how the numbers are doing for this series? I've been loving it. Already curious about a possible season 2, if possible. There's alot of wild pro wrestling stories that'd make for great episodes.. pillman, Owen, ect. Is there a site that posts the ratings for shows?
0:06 I have a really big boy. He’s never been interested in sports and he’s a gentle giant. His grandparents have tried to push him into football and other things because of his size. He doesn’t want to and we have never made him be anything other than who he is. He plays trombone and is beloved at school and is just a happy guy. But he’s absolutely right about that pressure.
Kerry had the weight of the world on his shoulders. Poor guy
Man, of all the Von Erichs, Kevin was my favorite! He was leaner and more agile than Kerry and since he always fought barefoot, I always saw him as Tarzan! I never even knew till now that Kerry killed himself too.
Keep the pro wrestling content coming guys!
I only knew Kerry from his WWF run, as I was both too young and not in the right geographic region to see World Class. I did get some exposure to Kevin and Chris from seeing USWA stuff on ESPN, but it was minimal. But I also got to meet Kerry at an autograph signing he did at a local venue in mid 1992, probably less than a year before he died. The way I found out he died was by me and my dad being in a book store, looking at the magazine rack, and seeing one of the wrestling mags have Kerry and Andre the Giant on the cover as an In Memoriam. We were shocked, and when we opened the magazine to read he'd committed suicide, it really hurt. It still does in some ways.
Such a well produced series so far. I've heard all of these stories before through various documentaries, but have been getting a bit more insight thanks to this series. Never knew people thought Montreal was a work.
I grew up in Dallas, TX watching all of the Von Erich’s including their famous father Fritz Von Erich. They were as famous as movie stars, in those days. Thanks.
Up all night watching this series!! Awesome job Viceland!
The real mystery about the Von Erichs is David's death . Gastro-Enteritis is plausible but there is a boat load left unsaid .
I always thought Michael's death was odd. Suicide in a sleeping bag at Lewisville Lake? TSS on top of that earlier?
Long Live Kerry Von Erich🙌🏾🙏🏼🙌🏾🙏🏼🙌🏾
These shows are awesome. Keep it up viceland
Anytime Jim Cornette is on anything these days sign me up
Waiting for the full Von Erich episode of "dark side of the ring!!" The best thing Vice has going today!!
I'm loving all of the episodes I just wish you would put up the full episodes
Great episode of dark side of the ring
Just seen this episode on Vice TV, and fuck, what a tragic time for this family, especially Keith, to see his five brothers suffered a fatal drug overdose, 3 suicides and fatal illness, and even his father died from lung cancer too. That's such a heavy shit to live with, but happily, he's still alive along with his sons and their families today.
I BECAME FRIENDS WITH KERRY WHILE WORKING FOR THE PHILA SPECTRUM WHEN HE WAS WRESTLING THERE AND WAS ALWAYS GREAT TO ME. A SAD ENDING TO A REALLY GOOD GUY.
Definitely. Kerry Von Erich had one of the best personalities of anyone in the history of the business. Few of the fans knew how much pain Kerry was struggling with at the time he died. Early 1993 was tough for me as a pro wrestling fan. Andre the Giant, Dino Bravo, and Kerry Von Erich each died fairly young in early 1993.
STOP SHOUTING, WE CAN ALL HEAR YOU! BUT YES, KERRY WAS SWEET WE WERE LOCKED UP TOGETHER BRIEFLY AND WE HAD SOME DOOKIE LOVE, HE GAVE AS GOOD AS HE GOT, AND NEVER DECLINED A CUDDLE AFTER, AND I KNEW HE WAS MISSING HIS FOOT, BUT I TOLD HIM I WASN'T GOING TO TELL ANYBODY, AND I DIDN'T! I WAS REALLY HOPING HE WAS GOING TO CHANGE HIS LIFE AROUND BUT IT NEVER HAPPENED, POOR KERRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EVIL UBUNTU can’t tell if you’re trolling or not
Kerry von Erich is the best.loved that guy.
They could have done so much with that foot. Kerry could have a match that if he lost he could continue to wrestle but the foot would have to permanently leave the organization. Or a ladder, tables and shoes match.
This episode made me cry just like him i have nine brothers and one sister I'm the youngest of all us there were ten the eldest who passed at only six months people look at me as the youngest but my brothers think I'm the more mature one because I can keep my emotions in i use to be really angry i don't know why I just was at seven teen i lost my father to a brain tumor and I remember that day i had came home from school i didn't work i had just gotten a copy of saints row four i found out i passed my algebra star test to graduate so it was a really good day as I sat playing my ma walks in she asked where I was that she thought I was at work she sat next to me looked me in the eye held my hands and said i need to tell you something your daddy passed away this morning he had a heart attack i felt the world stop my controller fell to floor the next thing i knew I was punching the floor over and over again again screaming yelling my mom holding me we went to my uncle's home i had shut down all i did was sobbing until we left my brothers the ones here in the states came comfort my mom and then they held me we had all lost our dad's they respected mine me and the eldest above me were both raised by him he loved my brother like he was his own flesh and blood we hugged each other they felt my pain were all in a group hugging the next week i missed school and I had a dream it was so real i remembered this park he took me a lot on Sundays it was this blue park swings slides sea saw were all blue as I'm walking I see him sitting on the swing he looks at me and smiles and I'm running to him and we hug but he's so much bigger then me I realized I'm a little boy and he kisses my head holding me all I did was cry telling him daddy I love you i miss i smelled his scent i felt his beard rubbing on my face felt his leather like skill it was him he looked at me and smiled telling me he loves me my mom and my brother and he will always be there when we need him he held my small hand in his and we walked and as we got to the edge of the park my back to normal he looked at me and hugged me and I hugged him not wanting to let go we then walked into the white void and I woke up.
I remember that dream i will never forget that dream and because of that dream i learned to control myself and remembered that my family is important to me the bond with my brothers is something i will always have and i kiss them and hug them every time i see them.
The story of the von Ericks is a sad tale of the family's loss but it's also a reminder of your family that things will get bad and it's easy to give up but it maybe hard to move on and to keep going but it's the right way to go.
The Von Erichs were true legends! They were Texas wrestling!!
I grew up in Grapevine, Tx. There was a racquetball club there that brought a lot of these guys in. Nice gym in an up and coming suburb next to the airport. It was no big deal to see Chris Adam's, any of the Von Erichs, Ultimate Warrior, Dick Murdoch, Freebirds etc. The Von Erichs were bigger than the Cowboys. Legends. But you also knew it was coming. After David and Mike everyone was waiting for Kerry. It really was sad. When Kerry did it, it was like maybe now he can rest. Wished he would have made it. Would have been real cool for his family and to hear him do shoots
My wife and I met Kerry at Bart McLendon's Rancho del Cielo. He was a delightful guy very friendly. Took a ride in my brother;s PT-17 that we few in to Bart;s grass strip.
This was during the era of World Class Championship Wrestling. This was the territory of Fritz Von Erich and his sons. This is the era of Harley Race, Ric Flair, Bruiser Brody, Kamala, The Missing Link and The Fabulous Freebirds. Rest in Peace Texas Tornado. The Iron Claw film shows the hardships and tragedies of the Von Erich family.
Rest in Peace Kerry Von Erich 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤
You have to wonder if anyone was there to tell guys like Kerry that there are other ways to cope with the pain besides illicit drugs. Stardom must be so intoxicating yet painful when the pressure becomes too much.
Meltzer was a bit inaccurate. They DID refer to Kerry by his name in WWF,I knew that as a kid. Howard Finkle says his name when announcing him and the commentators say it also, “The Texas Tornadooooo,Kerry Von Erich!!!” I just watched a match vs Mr Perfect where Vince says it continuously through the match.
Coachg YES BUT THEN THEY STOPPED SAYING IT AND JUST ANNOUNCED HIM AS THE TEXAS TORNADO
Initially, WWE announcers referred to him as "The Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich, but eventually they dropped his Von Erich moniker, and only referred to him as the Texas Tornado. By the time his action figure hit the market, he was only being called the Texas Tornado, but his signature "Kerry Von Erich" was printed on the figure's box.
They did refer to him as Kerry through 1990 but it dropped off sometime in 1991 and by the time he was fired, they hadn't used his name in ages.
Not only him, Ricky Steamboat and Tito Santana also were rebranded as their nicknames "The Dragon" & "El Matador" after sometime
Kerry Von Erick 😭 I was only 12 when my parents would take me to watch his matches… I wanted to grow up so I could marry him 😞😭 he had a face carved like the Angels 💔 May you and your brothers RIP 😢 I’m broken till this day, what a tragic lost 😞

My thoughts and prayers are with Kevin and his family. My god. I couldn't imagine...I lost my father and felt like going with him. That's how bad it gets.
Tragic and sad what happened to Kerry.
More Cornette . He is one of the most honest and compelling wrestling historians there is.
a mark in other words....
Rest In Peace🙏🤍🕊🙏♥️
Kerry was the man, I heard in an interview once that if Hulkamania hadn’t have worked out in making WWF the giant it became Vince was going to go after Kerry and make him the biggest wrestling star in the world.
Kerry could have never pulled that off. He was a better wrestler than Hulk but didn't have the charisma or the mic skills.
Allen Bass Kerry definitely had the charisma, mic skills not so much, but neither did Hogan at first. Heenan produced Hogan’s early interviews and worked with him hard on his mic skills.
lol, that was never going to happen. He just want disciplined enough. 33 is an unbelievable young age to die even in wrestling. Just too unstable. Doing Hogan's schedule, I doubt he could have lasted three months. He couldn't even do a diminished WWF schedule in 1990-91 without a lot of no shows. No way.
Amazing series. Thank you so much for this.
I remember when Kerry was busted. It was a big shocker at the time and no one could believe it. However, after hearing about how he would often show up for matches impaired, if at all, it isn't now. In fact, I'm surprised they didn't bring up the infamous match with Flair when he actually fell asleep during the match and how Flair had to put himself in holds. Fritz covered it up by saying that Kerry had a high fever and still managed to wrestle Flair to a time limit draw.
Kerry Von Erich needed "help". He didn't deserve to face hard time in prison for drug possession. He was in terrible pain, and the entire pro wrestling community lost an amazing talent on February 18, 1993.
The Von Erichs are Legends in all of wrestling. I don't follow the WWE HoF so idk if they are in there or not, but they definitely should be!
They are in the HOF.
They were inducted in the class of 2009.
Where is the full episode of this? would like to see it.
Boyeee Kerry was fine fine! It was so sad when this family started dying. I was just a kid but I was saddened. I never watched wrestling again honestly.

to be at that level at such a young age he must have been pushed and worked very hard starting at childhood that is a lot of pressure
