India has to overcome its superstitious and backwards caste system or risk being left behind in more ways than one. And Gandhi was no great soul. He wanted the status quo to remain pretty much the same. Just re-branded the language, which is even more insulting to an individual if you think about it,
MK Gandhi on Manual Scavengers The position that I really long for is that of the Bhangi. How sacred is this work of cleanliness! That work can be done only by a Brahmin or by a Bhangi. The Brahmin may do it in his wisdom, the Bhangi in ignorance. I respect, I adore, both of them. If either of the two disappears from Hinduism, Hinduism itself would disappear. And it is because seva-dharma (seva-service) is dear to my heart that the Bhangi is dear to me. I may even sit at my meals with a Bhangi on my side, but I do not ask you to align yourselves with them by intercaste dinners and marriages. - 8 January 19251, Harijan
The people that preach on behalf of the lower castes (the leftists) are the ones that are holding them down in that position the most. Left wing policies have hurt the economy, and have prevented billions of Indians from entering the middle class. There would be no need for scavengers if everyone could afford self cleaning robotic toilets, like they have in Japan. Japan, BTW, also had Untouchability as a practice.
The only cities to take any measures against these issues were Delhi and hyderabad, both not ruled by right wing parties..The states that reported the maximum number of deaths due to Manuel scavenging are all right wing ruled and has been for a long while..the same right wing that are conservative and favour casteism that made dalits stay where they are...the only parties that have rallied and protested against Manuel scavenging were all left wing parties..ur points don't hold up.
Mahatma Gandhi was not lead to end untouchabilty there was babasaheb ambedkar who was against & work on untouchabilty...... Correct your description box.....

A fascinating introduction to an element of Indian society I was familiar with, but didn't know much about.
I love this man's willpower and Independence of thought. Keep going!
Its very hurtful to see these practices are still going on. I would definitely try to eliminate manual scavenging from India
