He did not know that this was the first cry that baby ever made, and that there was a poor woman repeatedly having to give birth to said baby. Any other scenario would have made Hugh a sick bastard.

While it's really rare, some women are insanely tolerant to pain and exhaustion.
To compare, if men had to endure the same pain as women have to undergo during birth, they would black out from the intensity of it.
