- Jerry invited a young man on the stage when he was appearing in concert in Brooklyn back in 1994, and was not thrilled at what the young man proceeded to do. The thing that surprises me about this clip is how fast Jer snaps the mic out of the kid's hand, as if the first few words of the bit have already incensed him (quick on the draw!). Don't cross the Jer!

I had an encounter years ago with Jerry Lewis, and it was extremely distasteful. As a young waitress, I worked for Nathan's (the Coney Island hot dog people). Back in the day, the Muscular Dystrophy telethon came out of NY: The Americana Hotel. One afternoon, we were told that Jerry and his 'kids' were coming to Nathans' for lunch (there were about a dozen in the group, all told). Truthfully, we were delighted that a great star like Jerry would be there, and everyone decided to stay on shift. Even people who were not scheduled to work showed up, eager to do anything to wait on him and share that experience. Jerry started out by complaining, then mocking the Asian busboy who had admired him for years. Lewis was rude, arrogant, and when the Handwerker family picked up the check as their gift to MDAA, Jerry didn't even leave a tip. I heard a few years ago that when he died he deliberately cut his family with Patty out of the will. Seeing the way he behaved with us that day, I am not surprised. The man was a first class son of a bitch.

Sorry to hear that, what a disillusioning experience for all there who hoped to have some connection to greatness, then found themselves dealing with the ultimate of smallness.
To be expected from one who, when asked how he'd like to be remembered, replied, "How about 'genius'?"
Lewis was in good company with 3 others who are self-described geniuses: Donald Trump, Kanye West, & Wile E. Coyote.
Have never, ever, been a fan of his work, instinctively disliked him from early childhood, never made me laugh with all his asinine antics.
You & the others present at Nathan's that day got a sobering firsthand glimpse of the phoney, two-faced, sickly narcissistic split personality of a prototypical Hollywood star, who wanted all the adulation & big money coming his way, & was incapable of giving love, friendship, a good word or even a tip to another person.
And yes, he did exclude his family from his will.
I believe it abd ive met some god awful Jewish bigots in my.life then I've had so.e of the nicest Jewish peoe in my.life too...hes a bastatd did a lit of hurt to a bunch of WO.en in Hollywood
Jerry Lewis was someone who you would grow out of because of his immature sophomoric humor, he was such a caustic butthole pleasant experiences with "normies" painted a picture of how he was ill adapted and narcissistic outside of the eccentric elites of hollyweird.

I always enjoyed his movies but I have come to realize that Jerry was an egomaniac and a hateful person.
Now now realize that the telethons were really Jerry putting the spotlight on himself.
It's pretty often, that the person behind the clown's mask could be a person, you don't want to have as friend.
Possibly there is a connection between going on stage or becoming movie star and having problems with self-confidence.

When I was a kid I wrote to Jerry from Brooklyn, giving him my allowance that week for the MDA . He wrote me back 2 weeks later telling me how proud he was that I gave my hard earned allowance for a great cause. He signed the letter as well. 😢

I worked in the public relations office of MDA, for a few years. There were writers who composed those letters from Jerry Lewis, and the letters were usually “signed” with a special ink stamp mimicking his signature. However, when he visited our office, he would sometimes personally sign a few letters.
An elderly lady once stood up at one of his telethons saying that she was from his hometown in New Jersey.
He told her to sit down unless she had a bag of money for his kids. Real tact.
Well, I remember a famous Hammond organ player. I was at a presentation with him and asked him for his postage address, because I knew a big fan, willing to pay much money for the records and interested to tell the Hammond organ player how good his music is. But this Hammond organ player laughed and said, he would get so much letters all the time.
I never expected this artist to be so rude.
Unless this, I can listen his music.
To be polite and kind has a value, but does it affect the music?

@@christinelavere2636 Agreed, though to be fair, I think he meant just a postage address.. as in a post office box (I hope!) Either way, it does seem a very odd way to go about things. I really do feel for people in the spotlight, people go up and act as if they own them.

I lost all respect for him when he wouldn't acknowledge his ONLY daughter who was biological not adopted, who was disabled and homeless. It took his son Gary to step up and do the right thing! What a difference between him and his father! Class!

Dean Martin had a very successful top ten variety series on NBC that ran for nine seasons. After that he did a series of highly rated celebrity roast specials. Jerry Lewis never appeared on any of those shows. Martin also starred in many successful movies in thw '60s and '70s and was among the most popular recording artists of his time, with many top ten hits and a couple that went to number one. And he had one of the most successful Las Vegas acts that lasted for some 30 years. He was a Grammy winner, Golden Globe winner, CMA winner, Emmy nominee. Nobody "carried" Dean Martin.

Yeah, I met one of mine. A classic B-Movie actor. I had introduced him at a panel, and he got a moment with everyone in the crowd (many of my "hot female" friends, of course.) He was all jokes and smiles with everyone. As I was coming over to say hi, and maybe get an autograph, he just glared at me... I said, "Hi, um... I introduced you at the-"
"Oh, YEAH! THANKS, whoever the HELL you are!" and just stared like a disappointed parent. Everyone got quiet. Suddenly, I was the odd-man out who ruined the fun. I apologized and turned around, face flushed, and mumbled, "I just wanted... to meet you..."
He shouted behind me, "YOU'LL LIVE." and then went back to speaking with everyone.
(I guess he didn't like the intro) the only thing I can maybe consider is that I was overdressed compared to him, because I took the gig a bit seriously. I was wearing a laid-back suit and tie. Maybe he didn't like that.

@@robertrothberg8678 Lewis was sensitive about the song so his reaction wasn't surprising or all that extreme in this case. However, some of his recorded actions don't allow for generous interpretation so critique of his nature is not without foundation.

I did a photo shoot with Jerry about 30 years ago for Kellogg’s. He was a real arrogant jerk. We wanted him to pretend that he was pushing the swing in which Snap crackle and Pop would be inserted. He insisted that he couldn’t pretend to be pushing a swing, he had to actually push a swing with weight in it to make it properly realistic for his level of perfectionism so we had to get a bag of sand and tie it to the swing. So Jerry pushed the bag of sand, looked at the camera with his big goofy smile - - SNAP! - - the bag of sand came back and hit him in the balls! The crew rejoiced.
That's hysterical. Great story.
I can understand why he wanted something heavy on it. Was it so much of a problem to put something heavy on a swing so the great comedian could do a better job at the photo shoot?

I saw Jerry in concert live a few times. He was a narcissist every time without fail. I have never seen a person so full of himself. Let's be honest here; he's a bully. The only reason he did the telethons was because he was accused of making fun of the disabled in his comedy, and wanted to change that image.

I have felt for years that Lewis is hung up on himself and what he does. Listen to him talk about about his art and he talks in a very demeaning style. This is not surprising.

You're off base here. What happened had nothing to do with money. In fact, it was the opposite, making fun of the most sacred cause Jerry dedicated his life to: muscular dystrophy. That was Jerry in real life, not a character from his movies which would be fair game...and welcomed...

I watched the MD telethon years ago when ol' blue eyes ( for the younger generation Frank Sinatra) had 2 surprises for Jerry when he walked across the stage with big donations. Then after that the ushers locked all the doors and in comes Dean Martin. Reunion arranged by Frank. Very emotional...then last month or so I watched a RUclips video of a reporter interviewing Jerry and when I say my jaw hit the floor I'm not kidding. He was EXTREMELY RUDE AND A TOTAL ASS HOLE!! OMG !!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT I WITNESSED AND I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO DELETE THAT MEMORY. 😱😰😨SO UNFORTUNATE !!!!
I meant him in Las Vegas with my roommate Connie in 1975 (or 76) on a golf course (I was 2o or 21). I said hello and he he kind of rolled his eyes at me (like I want my space right now). I then became embarrassed/quiet, and Jerry immediately changed his demeanor and took time to speak to my roommate & I and was very nice to us. We then went on our merry way.
I heard that when children approached him in public with "Hi Jerry" or "Hello Mr. Lewis" he ignored them not even acknowledging their presence. Sure celebs hate being pestered in public BUT when you're Jerry Lewis & children spending their allowance to see you at Saturday matinees is it too much trouble to smile, say "Hi kid!" and scribble an autograph? Sheesh! ☻

And while I agree with just about everyone that leaving his fortune to the second wife and adopted daughter was unfortunate, it WAS his money. @Hadeydeppio "You'll Never Walk Alone" the song was suggested to him in 1964 by a disabled child, walking with a cane. It was suggested to Jerry as a song that would specifically represent physically disabled children.

Jerry was always a bit NASTY, at least that was the impression I got over the years, his behaviors were well known . actors/stars he worked with would elude to it in interviews and his own family made it known as well .
i enjoyed jerry lewis' comedy growing up buy some yrs ago when some victims of MD were picketing the MDA foundation.. jerry was asked about the situation and while on record, he was reported as saying, " Ask them who bought their wheel chairs" He has a history for making rudes gaffes.
We can't place all our hopes on a cure that might never be found, and we don't sit around waiting for a cure and feeling sorry for ourselves. We have lives to live.

I seen a movie about Jerry and Dean a few years ago, The movie was a biographical movie about them called Martin and Lewis, it came out in 2002 I believe. and in the movie there was this scene that every time Dean would tell a joke and get the laughs, Jerry would all of a sudden put on a sick act, then later being caught telling Dean's jokes and getting the laughs for himself like they were his jokes! Dean just rolled his eyes and let Jerry take the spot light, cause Dean knew he didn't have to prove himself. Jerry was an asshole from the start!

"Never meet your heroes". Like many...MANY other celebrities, there are countless people who say he was not a very good likable person in real life. My philosophy on such things is. If one or two people say bad things about someone I keep it in mind but reserve judgement, but when five, ten different people throught the years and decades say that a person was an awful person.....I accept that they were. No matter how many good memories it brings back about my youth, I will stop watching their films or stop listening to their songs.
My neighbor was unfortunate enough to be his stand in for films for too many years. Single parent, takes his kid on set only to be humiliated in front of her & the whole crew by you know who. A nasty drunk who relished personal meanness.

Clearly Jerry was extremely protective of the trademark / signature song of the telethon.
I don't think the guy was trying to - but apparently did not comprehend, "I'll never walk alone" was sacred to Jerry, like a prayer or Hymn.

I always thought Jerry was at his funniest without Dean Martin. His movies made me laugh, but was surprised at all the negative comments about him.
I saw Jerry Lewis perform in i believe 1993 at Westbury Music Fair and he was brilliant -- what a great great show - he far exceeded expectations -- what a great show he put on -- thanks for all the laughs Jerry may you RIP
The thing is, a disabled child suggested this song to jerry as a song to represent all disabled children. so you can understand why it means a lot to him and why he wouldn't want people making jokes with it.
Its funny to still see people trying to hate on Jerry Lewis. He was brilliant. Amazing talent. Did he have faults? Sure.....who doesn't? And I loved Dean Martin...both had their own thing.
It's funny because Jerry is "schooling" this kid on choosing appropriate material . . . Jerry Lewis being the ultimate arbiter of good taste.
He really didn't get ANGRY - he just put the kid IN HIS PLACE - certain things are OFF LIMITS to joke about and THAT was one of them !
That particular song had sentimental meaning to him. You can't blame him that. Had the guy picked to mimic a song from one of Jerry's comedies, he probably wouldn't of cared.
He must've hated Don Rickles for impersonating him, because Rickles would use that song with his imitation. Lol

As Jerry said, you don’t make a joke of that song, which is close to his heart and the closing song for his MS telethons. The kid had a chance to do anything he liked, but he chose poorly.

That's the song he sang at the end of every telethon for the kids who were sick. He would cry singing that song. For those who don't know, thats why he cut him off, it would've been disrespectful

mightymeatmonsta Actually, it was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the Broadway musical Carousel in 1945, a year before Jerry even met Dean, or had even thought of the MDA Telethon. Ironically, the film version of the show was released in 1956, the same year that Martin and Lewis officially broke up.
True perhaps Mr Lewis might have been sensitive about that particular song but he could have told the guy to choose another song please and then giving him another chance. Jerry Lewis doesn't work tirelessly to help others. He works "tirelessly" (a couple of days a year) to help himself and improve his own self image. He makes it harder for people with MD to achieve equality and live full lives because he perpetuates the myth that a cure is the only answer and they are helpless beings who can't work or live fulfilling lives. Do you actually KNOW anyone with a disability? The dozens of people I know with MD celebrate the fact that Jerry no longer does the telethon.
Jerry is a favorite comedian, especially in his vintage films, but I'd always want to be on his good side!

Jerry was protective of the song. He did not want it being used to make fun of kids with muscular dystrophy. By 1995, there was a strong backlash from some of “Jerry’s Kids” who were angry at him.
He thought the young man was a plant and so he acted accordingly. It is very understandable when viewed in that context.
Jerry was an enormously talented but troubled soul.
Pappy Tron And I doubt that many of those football fans nowadays are even aware of either Jerry Lewis or his telethon. For them this song is, and always has been, their clubs anthem.
He thought everyone was out to get him, or rip him off, too.
Jerry Lewis was upset.. because the guy in the audience.. was going to poke fun or belittle the song..that meant so much to Jerry and his telethon and his kids.
I understand Jerry's feelings on this.
If the guy impersonated Jerry from a Jerry Lewis movie etc .. that would have been most likely accepted.. and Jerry would have played along for the laughs.
I think what honked Jer off was the kid singing THAT song, "You'll Never Walk Alone." Not to defend him, because I think he could've at least let him go a little further into the song, but that's the song that Jerry always finished his telethon with, and he has strong feelings about it as it's attached to that other thing he's got strong feelings for: MD and kids.
Meanwhile, there's no way for that kid to have known Jerry's affection for that song and its annual usage. I'd like to think Jerry would've enjoyed an attempted impersonation of him using ANY other song or comedy bit. We'll never know!

Like the kid? If he would've said, "Hey Lady" and Jerry gotten mad, I'd say, "Lighten up, Jerry." You DO NOT make fun of that song! It is EXTREMELY personal to him for reasons he has never let on. His years of tireless efforts to combat MD and related neuro-muscular diseases even resulted in his life being saved.
