Well i really don't know what to say Nina has alot in her voice, But always seems to be that( but) word Angelina just has the IT factor that brings you into the song with her as she sings :) Beautiful
Alan, thank you for introducing many people to Nina Simone -- or should I say, thank you, Angelina, for introducing her to new generations of music lovers. As great Angelina is, and yet will become, she is revealing the greatness and the timelessness of the history of jazz.
Centuries of pain, loss and fight in Nina Simone's unforgiving voice. Angelina's precocious genius combined with her intuitive wisdom does not pretend to do the impossible.
Without casting aspersions, Angelina has the thread of the savant running through her, being able to pick up on the mannerisms of other singers, and their emotions. I love how she is developing, when she has genuine emotions to put in her performances she will be unstoppable.
Angelina does it again! We will probably never get the chance to see Angelina "at work" but my guess is she probably listens to a classic to see if it's to her liking. Then, she gets a copy of the lyrics and reads them as if she's reading a book. She gets an idea in her mind of what they mean and how they should be presented. Then, she has to coordinate her style and interpretation with the melody. When she has it all together she records the song and the finished product is so beautiful. And, when you watch her perform it seems like she accomplished everything effortlessly. Her smoothness and gentleness take over and so does our heart. Our heart never lets us forget who she is and what she means to us. Great work, again, Alan. Alan, I wonder if Angelina knows who Brenda Lee is? Remember her? She became well known at about 14 years old and also possessed an unusually deep voice. I'll bet she would find something to her liking. Just a thought, that's all.
I like the way you present your guess concerning Angelina's creative process. While reading your pleasant comment, the image of Angelina singing Bang Bang at eight years old on NGT popped up in my mind alongside those of two adult singers, Cher and Nancy. The constant sadness on Angelina's physionomy while narrating her hurtful story clashed with their lack of emotional distress. Angelina just releashed her Heal The World. She is fifteen now. She did not change one bit since the early years, isn'it she? May the damaging influences of the dark side of the show bizz be water off a duck back to our dearest Angie!
@@jacquespicotte8886 Jacques, without going into detail there have been certain star athletes in almost every major sport who were so good, so dominating, challenging the long time traditions of the sport, that rules had to be changed because they were changing the game. Not sure of the specifics but because of the purity of her soul and her deep love for people and the admiration she receives from fellow artists the industry will begin to support the artists as never before. After 4 or so years of watching Angie, today, along with some of your comparisons and comments, I think I've finally figured her out. It has been mentioned that she is a storyteller, but what a teller for sure. I am now convinced that that is her forte and singing is just a tool to help convey the story she has to tell. Obviously, she has a natural talent for singing and has honed it to the nth degree by studying the greats, but what differentiates her from the rest is the ability to deliver a meaningful story. That is how Angelina adds the 3rd dimension to every performance. I listened to Nina Simone and was not impressed. She, along with the other "great" jazz singers, was more about the singing than the delivery of the meaning. And, in this review, I do not think that Nina's rendition was the one that Angelina used as a base.

Dear Alan, What I like the most about my different expectations with regard to the subject matters of your panoramic video presentations is that you always defy them with an obvious pleasurable effect of poetic surprise. For each one that you are posting comes in me an impression of evident choice. For instance, Nina Simone had to appear in the picture one day, for, when greatness meets, a spiritual connection is readily established and must be shown. Even though she is not, in my mind, a kindred spirit for Angelina, like Amy is, a soul mate, like Adele, nor a big sister, like Lana, Nina must have played a certain role in Angelina internal array of enduring influences. How? By her pure and powerful jazz and blues emotional effect on Angelina's young soul? By feeding at the same source for their acts of creation? Or, more simply, by the sharing of same songs? Alan, you're only the second person, in over 30 years, to bring up Nina Simone's version of Here Comes the Sun in conversation. What a terrific cover. And rare, like you said. Nina Simone is a singular vocal stylist and I can see AJ listening to her and appreciating the unique artistry Nina expresses. What's obvious is that Simone makes these songs her own. AJ does the same thing but in her own way. Excellent 'influence focus'. Quite an illuminating and enjoyable comparative analysis!
Thanks again Alan. It’s interesting to see how these artists have inspired and influenced Angelina’s choices in her performances of these classic songs. It seems improbable for a child to have so much understanding of these different styles and genres, and the musical intelligence to craft these arrangements and vocals to fit her vision for these songs. Of course her fans know she’s done the improbable her whole life, and are looking forward to many more years of incredible artistry to come. For me personally, almost without exception Angelina’s voice is more pleasing to my ear, and enjoyable to listen to than any of the other artists in these videos. It’s that unknown special something she has that can still amaze me.
Bravo, Alan! This was so well done. And what a great idea, to highlight Nina Simone, and compare her and Angelina. Love the angle you always put into these videos 👍😊
Is it just me who hears so much of Amy Winehouse's nuances in Angelina's voice ? Many times I also hear the ghost of Elvis in Angelina as well, so I realize I may have to be committed to a mental institution. To be honest, just put me in a room with access to Angelina's recordings and I won't ask for much else.
I love your analytical comparisons. Here is one to think about doing. As a 12-year old Angelina wrote her song Shield which she performed on the Scandinavian talk show Skavlan. Many of AJ's fans probably have seen it. What many people may not have seen is the interview AJ did before she sang Shield: ruclips.net/video/97hjWg4ToRQ/видео.html The interview changes to English at the 0:36 mark. AJ is asked the question "Who do you feel you become?" when she is on-stage. Paraphrasing, AJ said that when she sings she goes into an endless other world that is full of happiness. Later, Angelina is asked about her song Shield. She said the song's sound was inspired by the Bond films and that her favorite Bond films are Diamonds Are Forever and Goldfinger. AJ even sung a brief a cappella version of Diamonds Are Forever. So, it would be interesting for you to compare various Bond films music with Angelina. Shield (original song as a 12-year old): ruclips.net/video/lQtUbVKb0vs/видео.html Diamonds Are Forever (as an 11-year old with live band at Proysenfestivalen on July 21, 2017): ruclips.net/video/9RGZRg9YH3k/видео.html Writing On The Wall (as a 9-year old with her rehearsal playing the piano on December 2015): ruclips.net/video/IyGJyVEkQ3Q/видео.html AJ also sang Skyfall but when she was 6-years old (or just had turned 7-years old), or about a year or so before she sang on Norway's Got Talent. Her voice was still developing.
Hi, Thanks for your suggestion. A Bond related video did cross my mind but it probably won't happen. A few reasons 1 I have already done a video featuring Shield 2 My next video in 5 days will feature Writing's on the Wall 3 The band does not help her stage performance in Diamonds are Forever
Here's an idea for a video: a review of Angelina's competition in _Norske Talenter_ (meaning, the other acts who competed against her in that season of the show - especially the 9 other acts who got to the finals). TV 2's official YT channel has a "Norske Talenter 2014" playlist you can use. And, of course, her Fanclub Mosarz channel has (presumably) complete versions of her second-round and semifinal episodes (split into multiple parts). I'm only now getting around to checking out some of the other acts who made it to the finals (the rundown of which are in the 12th video in that playlist - note that the 10th act is not listed in the video title but are seen in the video itself). I knew that "her choices" in that competition were not at all what you would expect from a child competing on a TV talent show, but seeing the other acts she was up against just puts that fact into *such* stark relief…
Thanks Alan for another great comparison between Angelina & another artist. I wasn't that familiar with Nina's works, but frankly I didn't like any of the examples you showed, I guess I'm just not a fan of hers. Just personal preference I guess. Thanks for what you do for Angelina!
Thank you Alan, another interesting insight into the music and style of Angelina Jordan. She certainly holds her own against such an iconic star from the past! I'm glad that you appreciated English culture in the1960s - music and comedy - In terms of the Beatles, they got much of their early inspiration from American musicians, of course they then evolved it to be come definitively British. I hope that you felt you did the right thing to come to England...
Hi Les, I absolutely LOVE living in England. Everything here is so cushioned. I say to friends that, living in England, I feel like I've been on holiday for 50 years. I also say that I had to leave America because my sense of humour is too dry. (Do I detect a hint of English pride on your part?)
@@thealanpapier Yes, I can understand your issue with humour, and indeed a little pride is showing on my part. I love visiting the USA, but I'm not sure that I would want to live there, unless there were regular concerts by a certain young lady that I could attend...
IMO, two different jazz styles, Angelina , cocktail jazz, ala Ahmad Jamal, ' Suicide is Painless' and Simone, Charles Lloyd, ' Sombrero Sam' , progressive. Personally, I think they overlap in jazz interest. No artist ever stays in the same venue and , I think these two go outside theirs' at times, just to be creative. Great vid. had no clue who Nina was, but now, double thanks.
I a big fan of AJ. Comparing the voice of Nina Simone to AJ is not really fair. First it is a very different singing style, different levels of experience and in another era. To me Nina in one of the most creative and emotionally loaded artist that ever was and she was a very highly skilled musician. AJ sure can transmit emotion and she has amazing story telling abilities. Maybe one day she will reach the level of Nina but that will come with more living experience and heartaches. As far I am concern at the present no comparison are possible because Nina was in a league of her own. Don't take me wrong I'm not saying that Angelina doesn't have the talent to get there but the world has changed and it is much more difficult today to be able to be on the airwaves and be experimental as Nina was. The music industry is way more conservative and stereotype. Artist have less freedom today then they use to have. Since the advent of MTV there is more emphasis on the entertainment aspects of music than of music itself. There a few exception that where able to shine through this mess such as Sade, Diana Kraal and Norah Jones for example. I'm not even saying that all pop music being produce since MTV is crap but there is very little place for real art. I'm very critical of the music industry and even of the artist being reviewed on RUclips such as Dimash and the likes. Dimash is a great and unique singer but for me he too much of a Circus number. Can he sing a song without showing his vocal wizardry. Pyrotechnical note are cool but if they actually add to the song. Nina Simone could sing a song in a monotonous way sometime and convey a much stronger message and emotion. I guess it comes down to the form over content dilemma. AJ as a good balance between form, content and emotion specially considering her age and she has an incredible potential but it all depends on where she wants to go from here and how daring she is. Anyway this is my own 2 cents. Continue the good work I do enjoy your video and I'm obviously not the only one.
Norah Jones had a great album which I have and still love "Come along with me" but now at age 41 she seems to have been cast aside in favor of the likes of Taylor Swift. What a shame. Angelina seems to have borrowed some of her tenderness with her ballads such as "CRAZY"
@@leebrn8588 I agree with you. It is much harder for non pop artist to stay in the limelight. They then if they do have the chance to hit the charts rarely back to the top. The industry wants young discardable talents à la Keisha or Britney Spears. TS as lots talent but she is not in the same league. As far I am concern she is an "entertainer" the likes of Madonna. I'm not saying that it is bad. It's just a different type of music that doesn't target the same crowd. I think Angelina will have a career like Tracy Chapman or Norah. Maybe she will reach the level of Nina.
Thanks for reply. Quite understandable. One aspect of Angelina is her incredible cross genre capabilities. She also sings songs running from the 1920's to modern day. We are talking about, jazz, blues, rock&roll, country, pop, classical style (Song For A: ruclips.net/video/Bo3mhxPM-uA/видео.html), etc. It could be interesting to discuss this, which is extremely rare to have the ability to sing cross genre effectively. An interesting example of cross genre is when 13-years old, Angelina collaborated with the Norwegian EDM (Electronic Dance Music) duo TRXD. That is pretty far away from what Angelina has sung. Yet she gives it a shot and records the vocals for the song Above The Water. It has only been released officially as an audio track in 2020. However, an amazing, unofficial video was created that added some footage of shuffle dancers: ruclips.net/video/y6SilwnR2Zc/видео.html And how could one forget her singing as a 10-year old I Will Survive, which is the only disco song to win a Grammy and in 2016, the Library of Congress deemed Gloria Gaynor's original recording to be "culturally, historically, or artistically significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Recording Registry: ruclips.net/video/ma7sa_n7k-8/видео.html Angelina again hits it out of the park, in new music genres.
Thank you for your kind words. I will continue to publish videos every Saturday 3pm UK time. Tomorrow is 'Angelina Jordan' Not Just Another Child Prodigy'
Ok, subscribed a long time ago, all listens were thumb's-proof-until now. I don't know how it happened but the gibberish she sang at about the 6:34 mark could be said to even faintly infect Angelina's version. I'd appreciate your opinion after taking another look to see if you really think Angelina ever "sang" like that?? In fair disclosure, I've NEVER found anything to post in your reactions to be less than amazed and pleased learning about the era AJ embraced as a girl and hope you continue to educate we fans for a long time. Sincere thanks for sharing your expert opinions.
Ah, I see what you mean. That bit I believe is called 'scat'. (Ella F did that a lot). You've heard of 'poetic license'? This might be called 'jazz license'
AJA dabbles and dances around the dead of the likes of Amy W., Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Elvis, and others who had tragic drug use, abuse or being abusive personna.... MY GOD one needs to pray that AJA stays grounded and realizes and does not enter any of those traps of living which surrounded such "great performers" gone south, then just GONE.
As always Alan a most interesting comparison but Nina Simone's best known song is Ain't Got No, I Got Life , I can only wish AJ covers this powerful protest song from the 60's
I don't know that song despite being young in the 60s. But then I never was that big on Nina Simone. A very unsympathetic performer I always thought, though with great skills.
I guess you didn't move to live in England. But you still have a chance to go and live in the country that gave us both Angelina and Aurora.. 😁 You might actually like it.. 😉
I have been to Norway many times. In fact, I used to work there. I really like Norway. I like the people there. They have a certain type of innocence- maybe that's from living in the corner of Europe where they haven't been too disturbed

Please STOP comparing these artist like Nina Simone, James Brown, Sarah Vaughn to Angelina Jordan. That is an insult. You should be comparing Angelina to them. They are the greats, they set the standards. You as if they are second only to a child. She is copying their style, intimations and phrasing. And please do not insult the memory of Nat King Cole by comparing him to her as if she did his songs better.
When Nina was singing Summertime, she didn’t hit a single note of the melody. The piano carried it. To me that’s not respecting the songwriter. She didn’t make it her own, she wrote a completely new melody, using the same words. Sorry, I didn’t like that.
Interesting, how Angelina can keep up with the big guns at such a young age! God Bless!

AJ also sang Skyfall but when she was 6-years old (or just had turned 7-years old), or about a year or so before she sang on Norway's Got Talent. Her voice was still developing.
Hi, Thanks for your suggestion.
A Bond related video did cross my mind but it probably won't happen.
A few reasons
1 I have already done a video featuring Shield
2 My next video in 5 days will feature Writing's on the Wall
3 The band does not help her stage performance in Diamonds are Forever
I'm totally with you on this.
Thanks for the learning
Your music knowledge is very impressive , I always learn from you your videos
I love visiting the USA, but I'm not sure that I would want to live there, unless there were regular concerts by a certain young lady that I could attend...
thank you , thank you very much .
Good point about the subtleties between different jazz styles. That's something that never occurred to me AP
I recommend you listen to later versions by Angelina. She has done this a number of times. Would be interested in what you think.
However, an amazing, unofficial video was created that added some footage of shuffle dancers: ruclips.net/video/y6SilwnR2Zc/видео.html
And how could one forget her singing as a 10-year old I Will Survive, which is the only disco song to win a Grammy and in 2016, the Library of Congress deemed Gloria Gaynor's original recording to be "culturally, historically, or artistically significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Recording Registry: ruclips.net/video/ma7sa_n7k-8/видео.html
Angelina again hits it out of the park, in new music genres.
Thank you Alan for your commentary you put these Vocalist in perspective I love your commentaries God bless you
Thank you for your kind words.
@Jacinto Gonzalez Good point. I like the spontaneity and originality of high level jazz
For your info My way is not a Sinatra song but a french song written by a french singer Claude François "comme d'habitude"
❤❤❤ Thank you Alan for all the work you do to educate us. Love your videos! Love Angelina❤❤❤
Beautiful Work Alan❤️😍🥰🗽
I guess you didn't move to live in England. But you still have a chance to go and live in the country that gave us both Angelina and Aurora.. 😁
You might actually like it.. 😉
I have been to Norway many times. In fact, I used to work there.
I really like Norway. I like the people there. They have a certain type of innocence- maybe that's from living in the corner of Europe where they haven't been too disturbed
Hi Alan. Do you realise AJ is not the first singer to barefoot? There is another one. I think you may know: Sandie Shaw who won the Eurovision ‘Puppet on the String”. Bill from Singapore.
william "There is another ONE." ???? www.flickr.com/groups/2469209@N24/discuss/72157643058378965/ This is a list of over 500 (I didn't count exactly) female barefoot singers.

Angelina's Summertime is channeling Ella's version, not Billies.
And 4 women
