I loved this movie. The sequence after the other couple was killed and the alien started going on and on about how he loved her but she's terrified out her mind was such a hilarious juxtaposition to me. The alien wanted to kill her, but he was screaming "IT'S OKAY I LOVE YOU" the entire time.
I had a massive ovarian cyst removed back in the day. When they got me up and walking after surgery, I felt my intestines shifting to find their new arrangement since the grapefruit-sized cyst was gone. Creepiest sensation ever, ugh. *shudder*
I had to get my entire thyroid removed, and I could feel the skin rubbing along the trachea. You know, on account of them no longer being connected. I‘m still surprised that wasn’t creepy to me. It was rather really fascinating. A couple days later the healing process had reached the point where enough connective tissue had built up to stop this movement, and I felt kinda disappointed. =D Once in a lifetime experience. Would not recommend (having an organ removed that is crucial to your survival). I‘m having my uterus removed sometime in the near future, so that’s bound to be fascinating as well.
It's one of those moments when I realize the human body can be scarier than any other monster... Terrifying fact, would 10/10 never want to learn about it again
Probably early surgeons noted it down. Makes sense that people who have to cut people up to try to keep them alive would take note of something so weird. Though I am not an expert and I have not looked it up, this is just me making a guess.
It’s the small intestine that can be returned in the abdomen and reposition by self per say. The large intestine must be oriented correctly. The risk of bowel obstruction and discomfort is the best option, while necrosis is the worst case. In other words if it’s not put back correctly you’ll be full of shit and in pain, or using a colostomy bag. The general surgeon who also was an instructor explained as such while waiting for the incoming appendectomy be rolled in.
I’m just noted it down as the cord conspiracy. You know like when you have a bunch of thin cables lined up and they somehow all tangle together anyway when out of sight? Maybe everything small and tube-y does it. Gaia’s intestines.
I don't know who noted it first, but my guess would be because it's essentially a semi-rigid fleshy tube in a liquidy environment, grown to a specific-ish shape, air and other stuff running through it kinda bends it back to how it's supposed to be. Closest thing I can think of as a visual example would be a self coiling garden hose. When there's water going through it, it expands into a hose to use, once empty, it coils itself back up. It goes back to its shape without outside interference cause that's the shape it "knows", being coiled up is how the material is in default after being made in a factory. Same applies to the intestines, they have a "factory default" shape in your stomach and at least the short intestine is malleable enough to unwind and then return to shape.
This is interesting bc I feel like the alien species would at some point, end up turning on themselves. Based on the intense love for family, friends, and love interests, a mass majority of the species may have an issue with taking their loved ones out and end up protecting humanity to save them. Love your videos!
@@sunt7918 Weirdly enough I don't think they would turn on themselves but do a mass assimilation kind of like what this alien was doing when they were becoming the woman talking about a more "pure" form of love. Though this does bring into question what about when they assimilate a sociopath or psychopath. But yeah at the end of the day I really like the premise and it definitely needs a part two.
@@TerminusEst1982 Such a Strange thing to comment on a Alien explained from a movie where the alien does just this so the possibility of it happening to more then one is very high. You must be fun to have thoughtful and interesting discussions with.
The alien spacecraft portion of your car nerding was legit hilarious. I'm about as far off from a car guy as there is but some reason you draw my interest when you go car nerd and that apparently goes with alien ones as well.
The joke rant about made up alien spaceships was awesome. Then again, I love your car rants in general. Unlike any other gearhead I've met, online or irl, you actually take the time to explain why "x thing" is so impressive.
If they took over human bodies again, though, then it's likely they'd also have similar issues to what this alien had- not being able to kill, succumbing to poopoo biological traits, etc. That also assumes that they'd take over humans, though, given that the scout would presumably have mentioned how weird humans are and how much easier things would be as deer.
Honestly would make a cool sequel. Aliens go through their own realization of Human emotions with some likely becoming attached and staging a rebellion Ala The Host.
Makes for a good moral tale - show up ready to dehumanize, get humanized, realize the philosophical implications of the universe are so massive that you're essentially just an aggressive neighboring country attacking a rural village, and now God has cursed you with knowledge you cannot hope to escape. And also because you're a weird fucking worm, just sort of had it coming.
@@ela-811 Honestly what happens if they assimilate a human supremacist who saw their families and friends killed? Hate is comparable an just as strong as love.
A thing I never get in some of these movies is the rest of the invasion force arriving literally days after the scout. Like what really was the purpose of the scout then, how much info could they really get and send back in such a short time for a global invasion? From the way it spoke of humans it was clear this was their first visit so they were invading a world that they knew nothing about.
Maybe there were more scouts in different parts of the world, taking up people that have more information about the world. I mean, even the knowledge of 1 human of the history, resorces of the world,is enough to be a motive for invasion
The only reason I can give in this case is that it's just tradition for this species sense they aren't used to actually encountering resistance like "love" and maybe the scout just gives advice on best meat suits. Reality would likely be the scout potentially does the job for days to decades depending on the intelligence it encounters.
@@kalebbradford143 ykno the alien probably thought that deer was the president of earth before it saw the guy wearing casual clothes and was like, " jack pot! this one has all these decorations, it must be the King!!"
If they’re confident that a successful invasion is a foregone conclusion, I could see them sending such a late scout as a means of orienting themselves in a practical fashion as opposed to relying on just observation or theory. Like this guy can now advise the other aliens to NOT assimilate certain humans or just avoid them altogether as a host for the invasion
She was probably taking Ativan, which is what is prescribed for anxiety attacks. It dissolves under your tongue very quickly and is absorbed into the blood stream, where it proceeds to calm you down and decreases the panic you feel. It is very fast acting, although not nearly as fast as in the movie. It takes about 2 or 3 minutes to dissolve completely and absorb into your blood stream, and then it takes about 5 more minutes to stop the anxiety attack altogether. The only way Ativan could work nearly as fast as shown in the movie, they would need a higher dose directly injected into your IV line.
25:11 I remember hearing about a case of poachers killing a female tiger and a male tiger believed to be her mate hunting them all down. So apparently, tigers can feel love and they have a sense of vengeance.
At the end of the day, love is just chemicals, but fuck if they aren't strong. There's actually several animals outside Humans who mate for life/ feel love for their partner. Only problem is we tend to think of our kind of love to be the only kind there is.
Sometimes, a newborn’s intestines don’t get enclosed within the body during gestation. They’re still hooked up, they’re just outside the body. They have to be placed in a special sleeve to keep them moist then suspended over the baby so gravity can slowly pull them into the abdomen. I don’t remember what this is called; I’m not a pedi nurse. Takes a while but then the opening is sutured closed, baby is monitored & goes home after a while, assuming all goes well. The body just figured out how to arrange things itself. Bodies are fascinating machines that are both miraculous & disgusting.
Yeah, this happened to one of my cousins. Except his organs wouldn't go back in on their own, and they had to surgically place them in his body. He's strong and healthy now, and one of the sweetest little men in the world. (The other sweetest lil men are his brothers 🥰)
If you find this interesting there is a manga called the summer hikaru died. Its about this eldritch entity that finds the body of hikaru who died while hiking and he takes it over but he also gets all his memories and Hikaru had feelings for his friend. They befriend each other its a cool concept
As someone who lives in NW Oregon, She would have 100% possibly died of hypothermia if she actually swam in our freezing ocean waters and then only went into the wet cold wilderness... It's not like she just took a refreshing shower.. she basically just started a slow timer towards her death⏳ It's the combo between how stupidly cold our ocean is, and mix it with a cold rainy day in the coast range wilderness.. it's a perfect recipe for disaster
My parents always used to tell me love is when you make the conscious choice to be with that person even after that initial physical infatuation fades away.
Full agree. Love isn’t the butterflies in the belly phase, that’s just anxiety and infatuation. Once that goes away you can actually get to know the other person because you can finally focus on them. Do you feel safe? Do you feel heard? Do you feel comfortable? Then that person is a keeper. =)
What a way for your parents to say they don’t love each other anymore, I would never be with someone I had to force myself to stay for, that’s what caused the whole “person murders spouse” shit
@@AnyHeroBlake well their marriage shows no sign of changing anytime soon, they’re still happy and in love and going on 40 years. You must not have read what I said. Infatuation is not the same as loving someone.
I've been with my husband for 14 years, since we were teens. I got a kick out of the idea that our love could possibly bring down an alien invasion. Wait til the aliens find out about mother/child bonding.
If the other aliens have the same reaction as this one then I don’t think their invasion would go smoothly. Almost every human has someone they love: a partner, parents and grandparents, offspring, close friends, pets. Unless they assimilate a sociopath or something there is going to be someone out there that any human these things assimilate is not going to want to kill. Even if they go for different species to assimilate they will have to choose carefully. This planet is full of pair and pack bonding species that form close bonds. Seems like these guys would just have to give up at some point and either call this planet a loss or cohabitate with us. Great video as always!
On the topic of organs being mirrored inside the body, my eldest brother has dextrocardia, which is where the heart is positioned on the right side of the chest as opposed to the left like us normies. It hasn't really caused any issues other than he has to tell medical techs to flip any imaging he gets done.
As someone in recovery from a moderate traumatic brain injury, I absolutely loved all the brain stuff in this one!!! (4 years of neurotherapy, brains are pretty neat... But fragile 😢)
5:45 same pet peeve, but also for flashlights (as I hate movies that need to rely on jumpscares), if you're in a dark room or corridor, anything that has a ceiling really, pointing the flashlight at the ceiling will illuminate the entire room rather than causing you to see what the flashlight is pointed at, and not seeing what's directly beside the beam due to the reflector cutoff.

That poor alien race. After conquering the galaxy, they end up on Earth. My partner and I have been together 20 years and love each other like the first day. So I assume the aliens that got us would feel the same. And they are welcome to my chronic anxiety, thantophobia, fear of heights, fear of flying and addiction to sugar. Yep, this is the last planet they are visiting. They are going to need to assimilate a lot of psychologists.
imagine an alien in someone's loyal pet like a dog or bird and they just become a good boy for the original owner. That said, their best bet for world domination are probably going to be cats

the "too close to where they filmed twilight" comment made me laugh because part of twilight was filmed in southern Washington, which places Twilight film locations incredibly close to Astoria, where they filmed the Goonies, you can't escape it apparently. Nowhere in western Washington is safe
Ah I think I understand what happened now. When Harry shows up what scared Ruth originally must’ve been Harry’s body. That’s why she didn’t look at him and why she ran for so long
With the combination of the source material, the facets you chose to expound on, and your hilarious brand of comedy, this is the best one yet. I learned a lot, and was laughing so hard the next moment.
There actually is a "Shark Mace", although I cannot remember what it's called and it has absolutely NO mace like properties or formula. I think it's just basically essence of dead shark but it supposedly works.
The toyota 4 runner. A vehicle so good, it makes multiple appearances on the channel. Also a lot of horror movies would end sooner if more protagonists drove these cars.
I’m surprised Ruth didn’t think Harry just left her in the woods when he went out for a walk. That was my first thought that would happen in the movie lol
My theory on side stitches is that it’s a muscle that activates while running to help support or stabilize and when somebody doesn’t engage in such motions for a long period of time the muscle overreacts or something to that nature.
honestly medication for anxiety (its generally the stuff thats highly addictive and not recommended to take regularly) has a calming affect even before you take it. I have major panic attacks, I'm talking A grade "I"m having a heart attack, these are my final moments" kinda deal. And sometimes just knowing my medication is in hand and ready is enough to stop me going over the precipice. Its real weird when you think about it but I would never have been able to kinda qualify its placebo affect if I didn't go through it every now and again
God this reminds me of the Nuerax Worm scenario in Plague Inc. Im more interested in how the invasion would play out. The issue with the Aliens is that they copy Humans entirely, so they attain everything about said person. In this sense, if someone is wired in such a unique way, is it possible that some Aliens would defect and we would get a "Parasyte The Maxim" situation. Some turn to stone cold killers, some remain animalistic and feral, or do some get Protagonist Syndrome and 1v1,000,000. Its such an interesting idea that hasnt been touched nearly enough ever since Parasyte
There is a parallel universe where a Roanoke alien creature has a youtube show where he talks about gleepglorp models and occasionally breaks out into talk about movies and biology.
I had that same “Highway” experience driving to Galveston from Dallas. Mine was at 2:30am…no street lights or traffic for like 30 miles. Definitely super creepy.
How do you not have 1 million subscribers yet. These videos are funny and informative. Also, I found Factor thanks to you and have gotten in much better shape. Thanks, bro.
Okay as someone that has been swimming with sharks, and feeling a lot of calm swimming with them, i can agree with her. I would rather swim with sharks over hiking with bears. Im also probably just weird lol
Coming across this old video in my recommendation, I was looking for someone to mention about it. I hope you're doing okay roanoak❤❤ Love your stuff @RoanokeGaming
I spent years under the placebo effect believing that ibuprofen and aspirin work near instantly if they're the gelcaps, and even after learning what the placebo effect is, the effect has such a self-consistent power that it still works that way for me
Had a Speech class in college where a woman who was very flower power talked about how love is the most important thing a human can experience. The very next person was a girl who was a med student that gave a speech about how love is a chemical reaction that evolution came up with to trick us into making more of ourselves. It was pretty funny
I’d love to see a video on The Petrification Disease from ‘Lies of P’. Interesting plague that the game revolves around. Plus the game is based on Pinocchio!!
I am generally astounded by how vast your knowledge of vehicles both terrestrial and extra-terrestrial is and find yhem to be the best part of your videos.
I always thought that side stitches occur when you exercise after eating since your body needs extra blood for digestion AND exercise, so your spleen empties your blood reserves but your body craves more, making it cramp up trying to squeeze out more.
I think humans will be fine when one of these aliens get in a mother or father and decides to rebel against its own species like the one that took her bf basically was going to help her escape. Tho i could see it becoming a double edge sword if it got into a serial killer, would it kill both humans and alien-humans alike?
One thing I observed from the stories my mother told about work (nurse) patients who had a good outlook and positive attitude tended to fair better in most regards while those who gave up or had poor outlooks and attitudes tended to suffer from more complications like infections and such.
So fun fact there actually is a sharper version of shark mace wherein the diver has a special diving knife loaded with supercooled CO2 in the hilt as a cartridge. Causes a football sized cavitation inside whatever you stab and also flash freezes it to boot
As someone who made controlled trials people read WAAAAAAAY more into what a placebo is than what it actually is... A placebo is just a way to account for EVERYTHING that is not the medication or treatment in trial. A lot of those results is just stuff we place in the "we dont know" box which is not the same as saying it's in the "mind over matter" box. Like how not knowing what happens after death doesnt prove there's ghosts... People usually mix it up with the practice some doctors used to have were they gave people useless medication when the patient believed they had some problem so they would stop nagging the doctors or to stop them from doing something stupid that actually harmed them (such as taking non prescribed medication like antibiotics). That was called "giving them a placebo" as in "something that does nothing at all" but since it changes their behaviour that change might actually do something or make people believe it did something despite doing absolutely nothing (like flu medication. it does absolutely nothing that cures you. it's just paracetamol and cafeine to keep you pain free and awake while the disease runs it's course). TL;DR below: If you were trying say...a cancer treatment...saying to a patient that they're not getting a test medication that could potentially save their life could induce a lot of psychological (anxiety, anger...) and behavioural (not eating correctly, taking other medications...) responses that would eschew the results in favor of the medication being tested. Even letting those who apply the placebo know that they're doing so is enough to cause changes in the results (in one case it was found out that they didnt take as much care in their cleaning routine before interacting with the patients as they believed they were dead either way and in another the caregivers were more likely to suggest alternatives to the medication in trial). This was subject to a lot of studies and even more after finding out that the simple act of making the patients take a sugar pill with a glass of water is enough to see improvements not because they BELIEVE they're getting the medication but because they wouldnt be drinking as much water if they didnt have to take the pill and the extra hydration helps. This lead to the discovery that a lot of medication and procedures we used were actually far less effective than we believed them to be (a great example being Vertebroplasty which was believed to be an effective method to eliminate back pain in people that had compression damage and yet we now know that despite it improving your posture and looks it does nothing to remove the pain itself which is most likely caused by lack of musculature in the area causing excessive localized pressure on the nerves) As an example there's a great study on the effects of acupuncture on pain management and there were 4 trials. 1- people were given acupuncture by professionals 2- people were given acupuncture by paid actors who just placed needles at random places. 3-people were NOT given acupuncture, just pinched in the same spot were the needles would be placed by the professionals to make them believe that they were pierced by needles. 4- people were given pain meds. This study is interesting because despite medication being clearly the best option for pain management hands down (like...80% better) there seemed to be no difference between being pierced by needles by a professional or an actor BUT there seemed to be improvements over only being pinched (even if the pinch was in the same place were you would place a needle). Further studies were recommended of course but the study seemed to conclude that there was a small improvement (1% if i recall correctly) if you were stabbed with needles when compared to NOT being stabbed with needles. Does this prove acupuncture is better than pain meds? absolutely not. Does it prove acupuncture is better than nothing? also not (1% improvement is well inside the error margin) It only proves that placebo trials need to be as close to the real thing as possible to account for all the external factors. Otherwise we could be giving people medication with severe side effects when better ones are available. This also helps us learn about other subjacent mechanisms that would actually help (like drinking water). There's other examples like nuns in the UK living longer than normal people, which doesnt prove religion makes you live longer. just that their lifestyle is healthier somehow... Anyway...the point is...the placebo effect is not magic nor "mind over matter". it's just a set of stuff we dont know acting in ways we cant control that can create statistical abnormalities. There might be genetic factors, there might be differences in eating habits, there might be aliens making people better for fun...we just dont know... And so we remove them from the equation by making a controlled trial that makes everyone act as similar as possible as if they were making the real thing. THAT'S a placebo.
So, on the topic of radiation based force multipliers the US military actually tried to make a mini nuke fallout style. However, it had a lot of issues such as irradiating the crew who shot it and many other issues which ultimately resulted in the project being scrapped.
Significant Other is the movie’s name… Edit: it’s a great movie, wait a week or so after watching this to watch the movie. I thought the lead was not the greatest at first, but I think she did almost a flawless job!
Dude the alien in this film is such a great amalgamation of “The Thing” and the Xenomorph, while also giving it human emotions. A nice twist. Also, I love how they paid homage to the deleted scene in Alien where Ripley finds Dallas cocooned on the wall. Roanoke is ultra mega giga chad version of Bill Nye, while actually being a scientist and not being a chud unlike Bill.
I get side stitches from sitting sometimes. Random pain, even though I'm active in my lifestyle, although not the very. I bike and walk and dance for exercises a few times a week. So, yeah, I was told growing up that side stitches was ONLY because I wasn't fit enough. I am totally normal according to my doctor, so I don't buy that anymore. It's strangely nice to hear that we ain't entirely sure why side stitches happen :)
Wait.... did I miss something? They didn't explain what happened to Ruth in the cave? The way she was acting, to begin with, makes you think she was the one that got alien napped

When i got about 3/4 through it, I realized i had seen this movie, so I had to rewind the whole video and sit and watch it lol 😆 I am enjoying your videos so much. One thing that gets me is when you say, "As we know," or something to that effect. It really makes me giggle because, no, no, we don't all know. But other that I think your videos are amazing and you do a really good job explaining things so we can understand them.
Great video dude. I love movies like this, reminds me of that Cabinet of Curiosities episode - Autopsy. And you did a great job covering that one and this one. Oh and yeah, fire would probably be easiest/most effective at dealing with this alien scum.
I always thought a side stich was just your bodies way of telling you to slow down? a lot of negative shit happens when you start running/heavy activity so if your body isn't prepared for it the body freaks out saying "stop before you hurt yourself". and I think it's a side stitch because it's a cardiovascular activity. your lungs probably working overtime expanding and contracting so much the connective tissue probably get's strained. that's why runners always raise their arms to expand their ribs so the lungs can fully expand so they can take slow deep breaths and it goes away. at least that's what I thought about during pt runs. lol.
I think we already did see the aliens true form behind the deer and during the first second of the attack on the deer, it looked like a huge flatworm with tentacles where the head or front area is.

Yea, and maybe even the love for a country or nationality, this movie could get complex very fast, I WANT A PART TWWOOOO
What a human concept. Nope. You'd be absolutely violated and subjugated.
@@TerminusEst1982 Such a Strange thing to comment on a Alien explained from a movie where the alien does just this so the possibility of it happening to more then one is very high. You must be fun to have thoughtful and interesting discussions with.
Makes me wonder what would happen if they infected someone neurodivergent?
And also because you're a weird fucking worm, just sort of had it coming.
whole lot of aliens about to have schizophrenia.
@@ela-811 Honestly what happens if they assimilate a human supremacist who saw their families and friends killed? Hate is comparable an just as strong as love.
Some great sequel ideas here.
Reality would likely be the scout potentially does the job for days to decades depending on the intelligence it encounters.
that's true, this is basically the galaxy's worst scout considering he could have taken over the body of like the US president or a top general.
Ativan sucks. Nothing comes close to Xanax for dealing with anxiety attacks. At least for me.
I thought it was Xanax, it worked SO quickly for me when I needed to use it for anxiety attacks. And Xanax is swallowed.
You're thinking of the Man-Eaters of Tsavo, I believe; it was two male lions who hunted people until a group of hunters killed them.
@@AJadedLizard That was in Africa. The incident I'm talking about happened in India.

Hey, that cool that the first time I heard someone have the same thing as me. (Sorry, I don't spell well if it spells badly.)
As someone in recovery from a moderate traumatic brain injury, I absolutely loved all the brain stuff in this one!!! (4 years of neurotherapy, brains are pretty neat... But fragile 😢)
Can you imagine the chaos in the brain if the alien took a human's dog?
If they had a sequel I could see an alien possessed dog protecting their "owner" through the alien apocalypse. Maybe it talks now too.
Wait, if the alien had his memories then why didnt he remember her having a massive crippling anxiety disorder?
5:45 same pet peeve, but also for flashlights (as I hate movies that need to rely on jumpscares), if you're in a dark room or corridor, anything that has a ceiling really, pointing the flashlight at the ceiling will illuminate the entire room rather than causing you to see what the flashlight is pointed at, and not seeing what's directly beside the beam due to the reflector cutoff.

I think humans will be fine when one of these aliens get in a mother or father and decides to rebel against its own species like the one that took her bf basically was going to help her escape.
TL;DR below:
If you were trying say...a cancer treatment...saying to a patient that they're not getting a test medication that could potentially save their life could induce a lot of psychological (anxiety, anger...) and behavioural (not eating correctly, taking other medications...) responses that would eschew the results in favor of the medication being tested.
This lead to the discovery that a lot of medication and procedures we used were actually far less effective than we believed them to be (a great example being Vertebroplasty which was believed to be an effective method to eliminate back pain in people that had compression damage and yet we now know that despite it improving your posture and looks it does nothing to remove the pain itself which is most likely caused by lack of musculature in the area causing excessive localized pressure on the nerves)
As an example there's a great study on the effects of acupuncture on pain management and there were 4 trials.
1- people were given acupuncture by professionals
2- people were given acupuncture by paid actors who just placed needles at random places.
Does it prove acupuncture is better than nothing? also not (1% improvement is well inside the error margin)
It only proves that placebo trials need to be as close to the real thing as possible to account for all the external factors.
Why isn't Maika Monroe talked about more online? Every movie she's in has strong cult film potential.

I always thought a side stich was just your bodies way of telling you to slow down? a lot of negative shit happens when you start running/heavy activity so if your body isn't prepared for it the body freaks out saying "stop before you hurt yourself". and I think it's a side stitch because it's a cardiovascular activity. your lungs probably working overtime expanding and contracting so much the connective tissue probably get's strained. that's why runners always raise their arms to expand their ribs so the lungs can fully expand so they can take slow deep breaths and it goes away. at least that's what I thought about during pt runs. lol.
