Rab Boag i met him at Glasgow airport years ago with my old schoolmate Evan Williams and Willie Wallace as they were going somewhere to talk about Celtic and i was going back to Australia ...i only had about 10 minutes but he made me feel like i was special just to have met them and wanted to meet them a great memory as i had went to Australie the year before they won the cup yes a true CELTIC LEGEND RIP bERTIE...... thanks for the memories
Wee Bertie transcended the divide but he was a wonderful human being as well. He was small in stature but a giant of a footballer, his and the Lisbon Lions legacy was cemented on that fateful day 25th May 1967 and these guys were the best team in the world at the time. My dad and I sat and watch the final of 67 in its entirety today, as Id never seen at all at once before, I had no idea about Bertie's passing until after the game, such a haunting thing.
My dad met Bertie in Yorkhill hospital in Glasgow just before 67. My dad was 10 and the doctor said to him "Do you know who that is?". My dad at 10 had stars in his eyes and said "That's Mr Celtic!". The doctor asked my dad if he wanted to meet him, and my dad was convinced that a big hero like Bertie wouldn't be bothered with a wee guy fae the Cordal in the Renton. The doctor must have said this to Bertie as when he came over he said to my dad" I'm just a wee guy from Maryhill". What a gem of a man! RIP Bertie x
