I'm a Kindergarten teacher too, going into my 2nd year. It is difficult to get them to pay attention in person and in general 15-20 min is about their attention or focus time before a transition of some kind needs to occur. In person I would do movement videos like Jack Hartman, Go Noodle, and some others, an art project, we'd move to a different area of the classroom, or I'd move to a more hands on activity like math games or STEM bins. Lots of songs are good! Even with distance learning we can play the videos, get a good morning routine like a welcome song, morning meeting, etc that will still happen if/when the district moves to hybrid. Asking too much of them too fast will cause more breakdowns, it will give parents some difficulties with getting students to do much of anything. When the pumpkins are ready is when Kinders start to adjust to school, so about mid October - so go slow, don't ask a lot in the beginning and build up to it. Focus on the WHY too.I had a difficult class last year and it took until about November until my behavior issues started being resolved. We don't start until Sept 14th but we've been planning as a group. We have no intention of any "new" learning for the first 2-3 weeks of school. Kids this age are not meant to be in front of a computer nor even sit still in a chair for that long haha. Distance learning for primary level seems impossible and I'm not looking forward to it honestly. My hope is that I can do interactive fun stuff otherwise these kids will learn nothing, even if they are sitting quietly they aren't listening hahah. They need lots of attention getters - maybe create a fun costume day where they can dress up as something once a week, teach some sign language, maybe do a "find the pickle" type thing where you have a pickle cutout(or whatever you want) that you place in different places behind you during live zooms and see who finds it. Yes, I used two computers to log into my Google Meets in the spring and I'm going to do it again in the Fall! It is so helpful to have one stay on the meet so you can see the students' faces while you're presenting something on the other one.
What a wonderful space! I'm so jelly about all those windows, my classroom has zero! I'm so excited for you to see the tremendous growth that comes with teaching kinder! 💜
My kinders loved GoNoodle for movement breaks and it’s one of those things you can screen share 😉 Also, scavenger hunts are great... you can incorporate letter sounds, colors, numbers, shapes, etc. and it gets them moving!

Jack Heartman videos are a lifesaver for those tiny attention spans. They teach things still but also get them moving.
