    I used to be a BMW tech and I'll tell you exactly why they continuously fail. 1. Over-engineered. They're complicated, too complex, unnecessarily so. Modules control every little feature of the cars and there are dozens of them all bused together and separate buses are connected through yet another module. The mechanical parts suffer much of the same kinds of over engineering as the electronics. 2. Component build quality. The cars themselves seem to be well made but the parts, ESPECIALLY electronics, are shit. My old Chevy truck had many of the same features as the BMW's I worked on but I can tell you my auto-dimming rear view mirror never leaked onto my interior, and my compass never lost its calibration. In fact, I just sold that truck with 180k miles and never a drop of oil dropped, module failed, suspension bushing blow out or even an O2 sensor quit. 3. Materials. I don't know how well German cars hold up in their motherland but here in much hotter, drier America they are completely wrong for our climate. Gaskets get hard and shrink then crack causing oil leaks and plastics get very brittle and the rubber underhood just rots away. And then there's the interior glues...Maybe they're fine for Europe but in North America the materials are absolutely inadequate.

      Cory Holbrook I could not agree more with you man. It seems as though these cars are solely designed for the much cooler European climates unlike here in the states. The engine and transmission on my car is very strong, however the parts around it such as gaskets, various pumps, and coolant/vacuum lines are not!

      Cory Holbrook I agree .. I'm replacing gaskets, lines and bushings on my Japanese import.. the dash is cracked as well..

      I agree with the theory and to be true we do have such varying climates around the USA. We are also increasingly moving to and living in dry, inhospitable deserts thanks the air conditioning. But while I have not owned a Chevy for long, my recent Ford/Mazda also had plastic fittings crumbling under the hood from the heat. I feel German cars are often designed for the cool autobahn and do not allow for enough cool air to cool the engine. I know that sadly the German companies enjoy profits off parts sales while Toyota chooses to design for reliability. VW sold me Passat with 2 yr/24 warranty and lots of things failed. I picked Honda this time. I would have gone Chevy if the transmission performance been better on 6 speed.

      James Speer The good thing about the German companies is that multiple companies make the approved fluids for the cars. So you don't have to buy the transmission fluid from the Mercedes dealer for example. The current Toyota and Nissan transmission fluids are proprietary, no other oil company sells a manufacturer approved transmission fluid for Nissan and Toyota. I have to buy the transmission fluid from the Nissan dealer and it is not cheap. That's what I hate about the Japanese companies. Don't forget that the transmission fluid in Japanese cars has to be changed too.

      Lol I push my 335is so hard every single day. 30k km in less than a year, my oil temp sits at like 120 degrees all day, not a single issue, it just takes the beating and has been my most reliable car tbh.

      American Sniper leasing is a smart decision in this brand. You’re only paying for depreciation, and it’s covered under warranty and maintaince. A valve cover gasket at the dealership costs 1500+ for a f30... think about all the other parts YIKESS

      Om B Hi, just want to discuss and share my thoughts. Recently I just get GLC instead of X3, 520i or 330i with the same budget. Actually I prefer BMW, but considering poor realibility issue, I picked GLC instead eventhough sometimes still keep thinking about BMW especially the new 320i estate which has just been launched for only 25 units in my city. Hopefully I am making a right decision. Maybe next time should I get a brand new bmw and sell it after the warranty expire?

    I think plastic will be the downfall of these cars long term. I wonder if our cars will be on the road 20 years from now like E30's today. It would be cool if a company made metal replacements for those parts for people who want their cars to run forever.

      Plastic is not the issue...BMW choose to use and designed them.poorly is the issue.
      My Lexus Ls has ton of plastic....but they last longer...
      Plastic peeling, gummy... on modern BMW 2005-2011 ( I experienced from friends bimmers,who parked in garage in)..
      California)...
      Hoses and tank and gasket on bimmers are poorly designed intentionally for failure....
      That's the problem
      I don't think Japanese are that much smarter to design those items to last much longer....
      They just want it last longer so they built them that way.
      BMW has enough fans...no need to change ...no reason right...
      But until their sale drop... They will make them better....
      $$$

    Two words: "PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE." Companies have learned from the tech industry they can make much more money if they can convince their customers to buy a new car every few years. Having their products fail after the warranty expires coupled to attractive lease rates incentivizes customers to swap for a new car every three years. Dealers sell those "off lease" cars "certified pre-owned" MAYBE with an extended warranty. Either immediately or when the extended warranty is over, the vehicle becomes a PARTS & SERVICE-REVENUE engine. Everything is DESIGNED AND ENGINEERED TO FAIL according to a pre-set schedule. They calculate: over the estimated lifespan of this-or-that model, they have X probability of generating Y amount of parts and service revenues from it. They factor into their calculations aftermarket parts, third-party mechanics, etc. But multiplied out over tens of thousands of vehicles, they use these calculations to make accurate financial projections. Japanese companies have not yet stooped to this level yet, since reliability is still their claim to fame...but it may only be a matter of time before the "old guard" who still believe in honor and perfection are replaced by bean-counters who realize they can make more money making very pricey, very trendy parts and service engines. At the end of the day, if you want truly trouble-free German car ownership experience, LEASE to the end of whatever warranty/extended warranty you can swing and let some other poor bastard take the hit on long-term ownership of the vehicle.

      BMW is a leasing company. The cars are just the candy to attract clients. lol The engineering that has gone into making BMW a great driving machine is amazing, but they're expensive. Even the top of the line (over $100K) models suffer the same failures as the lower priced versions. There's a saying..."If you can't afford to lease a new BMW, you can't afford to own a used one."

    You were right to point out that there is a lot of heat under the hood of that car, but in terms of performance, the problem isn't that it's hot under there, it's that your aftermarket air filter is sucking all that hot air into the engine. Originally, ducting brought cold air from the very front of the car into the engine, so heat wasn't really a problem until it was modded. So whoever modded it made it worse, marginally improving flow but making the air much hotter. That "improvement" probably cost you a few hp, but hey, it sounds cool, right? Now, it COULD be modded to improve airflow AND feed it cold air at the same time, which would be the right way to mod it, but unless you can do that, you're better off leaving it stock.

      with light tuning upto 380hp ,there is no diffrence over stock airbox,yes the air is cooler thru the stock box ,the DCI's are required on higher boosted engines as the stock box is restrictive( dimensions ) restricting the air coming in ,the heat soak is more of a issue if using DCI's on stock car ,if aiming for more power 400+ it becomes less of an issue as its trying to suck more,(im not sure when you made the vid ),if you already had the bigger FMIC,followed this channel for a while,hes well informed and has learned and taught other too ,great bloke i imagine temps in cali are a killer too.. to ,but agreed everything since 2006 has had plastic replacement /breakable items i call them bmw consumables gone are the old days of over engineered 5 bolts when 3 , will do now its just , meh fuck it well make it plastic ,they'll have to come back within 10 yrs for a new one !!

      My is nearly 10 years. Have it for 4 years now. I drive it every day like it was a race track. BMW e90 325i 2008 bavarian edition. Not a single fucking problem. Changed wheel barings in the front thats all.

      What on earth...he just says how the heat build up under the hood is tremendous and goes and disconnects the factory cold air intake?? Those air filters are probably costing him 5 horsepower, the factory designed air intake is far better than that!

      Yup! Probably actually lost power from sucking up hot air from the engine bay. Modern cars do not need aftermarket intakes, you’ll never feel the potentially increased power from them and you can spend $400 in better ways

      He lost me when he complained about heat from the intake and he removed the stock cold air intake and installed his own warm air intake. I couldn't really listen to anything after that.

    My 1987 Mercedes 190e is fine. My 1981 Mercedes 240D works line a champ. 80's Mercedes are very reliable.

    BMW high price junk. I brought my wife a BMW, the worst car we ever owned. I will never buy another one. Good looking comfortable riding car. Unreliable as heck. Constant issues. Every issue cost big money to fix.

      @Noel Carvajal - that’s kind of his point. For what BMW is charging for their cars, they shouldn’t fail like they do. When buying a used BMW, your first thought shouldn’t have to be “OMG, how much of the factory warranty is left on this thing?” They are beautiful cars with HORRIBLE reliability track records. Nearly everyone I know that owns one. Or has owned one says the same thing. You want a lifestyle- buy BMW. You want reliability- buy a Lexus!

      @Noel Carvajal - sounds like you’ve been fortunate enough to get a good car. Even with putting in the appropriate preventive maintenance, you are VERY lucky to avoid huge repair bills at some point. The problems are generally not with those systems that preventive maintenance can help mitigate. The repair bills come from things like wiring harnesses, serpentine belts, oxygen sensors, etc. that come from either poor quality and/or poor design from over engineering.

    Replacing the air filter box with open filter and no shield will result in hot air around the engine to get sucked in. Furthermore it will render the IC insufficient. The intercooler is not designed for the increased amount of hot air.

    BMW's are "unreliable" because you're beating the crap out of your car. If you are watching this video you are probably a speed/car enthusiast and you push your gas peddle all the way down multiple times, every single time you drive. Think about it, High Performance cars that are designed and built ONLY for racing go through rebuilds every single race because beating on them breaks them down and you are NOT driving one of those purpose build machines. You are driving a sporty car designed for average people. If you drive your BMW exactly the same way that your neighbor drives her Honda Accord, you'd think your BMW was reliable. My BMW has been great to me for 4 years and 65K miles, yet I did have one warranty job done. BMW reliability is average, meaning they are just like everyone else; some shit breaks, some shit doesn't, and if you push your car hard, you will break it. Your car will break just like any Honda, Toyota or Nissan when you beat the hell out of them. Nothing is built to be absolutely fail proof. And for those of you who have purchased a 10 year old BMW with 120-150 THOUSAND miles on the odometer and you beat the hell out of your aging car, you shouldn't bitch when it breaks down. It's past it's prime and it's aging. Go beat on a 150K mile Maxima and you'll blow the axles off the front end. Go beat on an old Civic and you'll warp the head or smash the pistons into the valves. Don't be stupid, everything breaks and it breaks faster and more severe when you treat it like a piece of crap.

      So many times I have seen people with high performance cars accelerate hard when the car has not reach proper operating temp for the engine. Maybe it's the louder exhaust note that entices them to accelerate hard when the engine is barely warmed up. Nothing wrong with running your car hard, but let it warm up first.

      The car should tolerate all the circumstances that the driver challenge it with ... with this kind of cars it should've been made materials and design that allow the engine to cool down and in addition it should has more space inside the bonnet i have Mercedes its way better than bmw because its has all the things that we keep talking about ... by the way i love bmw more than any other cars ... this make me feel sad that the company they don't care about this kind of details because the new bmw is made in China so the price of the car is exaggerated 🙃 i wish bmw will pay more attention to this kind of problems because next decade no one is going to buy such crap

      Driving fast shouldn't cause my BMW X5's fan blower, tailgate latch, rain sensor, oil level sensor, and passenger map light button to fail.

    I'm on my third BMW, now. The ones that last were kept garaged, and driven quite a bit. They definitely like cooler weather, and make sure you don't procrastinate on scheduled maintenance. Gaskets need to be changed frequently, and hoses and belts need to be checked quite often.

      BMW Fanatic ~ and you have double the subscriptions this channel does.... but 150k technically in my mind is only middle aged. My e30 went to 330k and it still ran and everything.... i just couldn't afford the MOT bill (about 2k) and so it stayed on my drive and mould got sadly and loss of job etc. I think the car is still alive as the dvla database says its not scrapped. It was sold to be a track car!

    You could cool down the intake temps by putting the stock air box back on. This will increase the power too. In the dealership, we call this mod the " hot air induction kit", HAI instead of CAI because those air intakes are directly exposed to the hot engine bay air where as the stock air box does a really good job of sealing off the cold intake air with the hot engine air. Just a few tips though, make sure you carbon clean the valves at 50-60k intervals, use BMW OEM coolant, use OEM filters ONLY and a premium synthetic oil like Amsoil European formula or Ravenol. It's not that the cooling on the car is insufficient, BMW chooses to run their turbo cars over 230-240 degrees to improve efficiency and performance. Downside is, plastics and rubber get more fragile at an increased rate. If you ever have any questions or concerns, reach out to me and I'll always try to help out

      Car Nut theyre not designed for cold air induction. Designed to hit target boost in excess of 15psi the factory airbox is too restrictive, the air gets hot regardless since it is compressed by the turbo

      It's compounding the heat problem, the car should be sucking 25dc ambient air when instead you've now sucking in air above 60dc+ under the bonnet. I would dare say post turbo's the inlet air temp will be very high.

      The temp of the compressed air is relative to the temp before compression. So gains you've made in volume have been negated in density. Also if it's an oil cleaned filter (ie: K and N filter) the oil can shorten the life of the MAF sensor...Further reducing reliability.

      Car Nut The factory snorkel is still retained and directing cooler air to the DCI’s & Even if the temps are higher than with the stock airbox, it’s still better off in my case. Since I have a stage 2 performance tune on this car pushing 17psi and making around 360whp the factory airbox cannot intake that amount of air efficiently. The next step for cooler air would be relocation inlets in which you move the intake tract to the other side of the engine giving a massive increase in performance, as well as a larger intercooler

    There's a very easy formula to avoid all this: the more expensive the BMW, the more problems down the road. Also the more expensive cars usually depreciate much more. I own 320i. Amazing little car.

    Good maintenance, 88c thermostat, electric fan conversion and I enjoy every day my car.
    Just a tip for any BMW fan, whatchout for cooling and oil and you will enjoy your car for years. If you can, change every god damn hose on your car with aftermarket ones, lower temp thermostat, change the oil faster (do not wait for service light to come on).

    Drivel. The standard air intake is right at the front of the grill. Why do people fit K+N style intake filters under the bonnet? because they think it help's more air enter the engine. Right. Not. Do you seriously think any manufacturer would design an air intake system that reduces power? I didn't watch after 4.51 as like I say the reviewer by his own admission is not technically qualified

      Steve-DIFMEIWS Steve Dual cone intakes are some of the most beneficial mods you can do to an N54. Do you see anyone with a 335i with over 450hp+ still running the stock airbox ? Nope, because the factory airbox is too restrictive. Ask any N54 enthusiast, or take a look at the dyno sheets by burger motorsports or any other dci manufacturer and you’ll understand

Every car company on earth designs the air intake system to be restrictive on purpose. It promotes reliability for all types of drivers. That’s why aftermarket air intake systems exist. I’m going to assume your not familiar with engine mods. From hot rods of the 1950’s, to AMG in the 1970’s, to the Japanese import market. The first mod is usually better breathing for the engine.

      K&N filters are probably the worst thing you can do to any vehicle. I don't even call them filters because they do not do the job of a filter. They do indeed flow more air (which requires more fuel as well) but they also let through massive amounts of dirt, enough to seriously shorten the life of an engine. They are racing parts. I use them on my drag race car, on the track. I put oiled foam covers over them to drive the car to and from the track. They are NOT designed for street driven cars and should never be used on the street, especially the pod type, with no airbox. The airbox is designed to precisely control the amount of air entering the engine. Only a master tuner who understands the consequences of such modifications should mess with the intake or exhaust.

      Who cares about improving the flow of hot engine bay air, and magazines stay in business by promoting parts. Intercooler upgrades will flow more cool air, not pod filters.

      Just my two cents but air velocity matters too. If you take my vacuum cleaner and put the fine nozzle the speed and power are significantly more than the open hose. Modders don't use a flow bench or do testing so naturally the American market buys junk and the cars all sound like junk. I hope boys will become men and learn to buy sweet sounding exhausts that don't sound so pitiful. (Try Supersprint, Milltek, Remus, Corsa etc)

    I still have an 05 Toyota Corolla has 480k kilometers on it. All I've done is just oil changes, tires, breaks.. other than that.. nothing wrong with it. As much as I love BMW and Audi, I will always buy Toyota or a Lexus. Reliability to the max.

    Well. It all depends. All that happens on cars with 100,000 -150,000 miles on the clock. Maintenance is the key. Things need to be replaced in time. For some reason, I noticed, people have expectations that everything on cars has to last forever.

    I had the same car for 10 years, 90k miles water pump and thermostat broke thats it. Sold it after, so I must say it was pretty reliable.

    That air cooling you have is not what BMW designed, so that is a choice the owner makes.
    I drive my N54 like a maniac on the Autobahn, which means high speed pulls over 5-6 hours in a day (130-280 kph) and I have had no problem with heat at all.
    For reference, I have a K&N free flow filter in the original air filter box, and a stage 2 tune.
    Anyways, to review design and quality, you should review an unmodified car, that's how they are intended to be used.
    BMW doesn't design and build the 335i to accommodate higher boost, 100 more HP and 100 more torque. That would make the car much more expensive.
    How many unmodified cars have you heard about that had their charge pipe break, or engine heat being an issue?
    The fact is, when modifying and tuning the car, you make a lot more stress on the components than BMW intended, so if something breaks, it's on you.

      Exactly the right words. All parts in the BMW are designed to work reliable in an unmodified car. You cannot complain that sucked in is to hot if you change the position of the intake, actually you can complain but you cannot blame BMW for your poor modification. The same goes for all other components which do not like being stressed more then intended by the manufacturer.
      If you want a tuned 335i then go to a skilled workshop which knows what parts must be changed or modified or buy an M3 if you don't know how to do that and let the skilled engineers do their job. Then you can check which parts are changed by the BMW engineers and why the M3 is much more expensive then your 335i.

      100% agreed with both of these statements. Modified cars, even lightly modified, are a whole different ballgame when it comes to reliability. Especially dealing with plastic parts. Also, if someone wishes to run an air intake; its best to fabricate or modify the intake to suck cooler air from the outside of the car; rather than suck the hot air from the engine bay.

    coolant expansion tanks are made that way, so if there is too much pressure you won't blow up your radiator or anything else. A plastic tank is way cheaper to replace

      Dude what?? It's called a valve and yes it makes sure you don't blow up anything...
      My 18 year old Audi still has it's first expansion tank and it runs a 2.7l V6 twin turbo. No problems there... (maybe because it's from the year 1999 and not some Audi crap from today or even 10 years ago??)
      Every car has it's flaws (also mine) and if you know them you can, in most cases, make sure they don't trouble you. As in replacing vulnerable tubes with better ones like I did.
      But i believe, the big problem with this bmw (resp. the engine) is the fact that it is a straight six and they put it in the wrong f**king way. The cylinder all the way in the back is always troubled with heat because it is so far back and can barely be cooled enough. Know some guys who had their cylinders actually deform from heat or had their cylinders blow right thru the cylinder head gasket. And that is just a little more expensive than switching a coolant expansion tank.

    Plastics, glassfibre etc are used in everything from planes, boats rockets and the space shuttle.
    They are not anymore unreliable, "because" they are plastic, it is bad design and/or poor maintenance.

      Something with the oil line, p*ssed oil all over the turbo which lead to premature failure. Car was smoking bad on idle. They said I got lucky since the previous day another owner of an X6 had his burnt down due to this (I see there are a lot of issues with these turbos). All replaced under warranty. I went to the dealership 3 times in a year for various other faults and with such a low mileage, its shocking. Don't get me wrong, I love BMW since old school e30,34,36,46 but this F30 has Broke My Wallet and my heart lol. If a lowly 316 can cost this much to upkeep with such low mileage, I fear for more expensive models with age

    I've seen nonturbo cars going for over 200k miles tho. It's like any vehicle, take care of it and it will take care of you. I work for BMW, most rough cars we get in is because people just dont take care of them the way BMWs require. Every vehicle has strong and weak points.

    You're definitely adding heat problems with those aftermarket intakes, put the stock box back in with an aftermarket filter and you will have much cooler air in the engine. Also, if parts are failing after a tune (assuming your car is tuned) you are operating the car under more stress than it was designed to take. So, parts that would normally last a long time fail sooner because you are increasing stress on those parts. Nothing wrong with tuning if that's your thing, but you will increase the likelihood of issues

      Honda and Toyota sell cars in North America that are assembled at plants in the U.S. They've been doing that since the 70's and 80's and have a far more impressive track record for reliability and durability.

      I agree with you. But only in one case. If you drive an Audi produced after, let's say 2001.
      My '99 Audi S4 runs so good. The engine is not over engineered, there's not tons of crap electronics that can make the whole car light up like a f**king christmas tree. It only has what it needs. A good and solid produced engine, windshield wipers and a radio.
      Of course it's 18 years old now and I took the step of putting in more solid tubes which collaborate with the two turbos. But I only did that because I want to drive that thing until I die (in it) or have no money left to let the spare parts be produced extra after Audi stops making them. Never ever will I buy a new Audi or for that matter a new car at all.
      So, whatever Audi you drive (I'm guessing a rather newer one) sell that piece of junk and go back in time where Audi actually cared to produce a car that could outlive a f**king leasing contract.
      By the way, while you're at it, I strongly suggest you get an Audi that was produced in Germany back when we went over to the year 2000 and not in the states because they were not produced the same way. Or buy something else, just make sure it's at least 15 years old. Let's say you spend 5000 on a used car, you still have 25'000 to put into spare parts versus buying a new 30'000 dollar car which will fall apart after 5 years costing at least the same amount on spare parts as your 15 year old used car. Do the math ;)

    Im a technician and ill say All cars come with maintenence with age and things become old and need to be replaced. I think its a lack of maintenence that gives these cars a bad name i have a bmw and a audi and have no issues just keep up with maintenence like any other vehicle. If people cant fix or maintain these cars maybe they shouldnt be buying these cars to begin with.

    most turbo owners don’t understand that after “getting on it” (boost), you must let it cool down. otherwise, the oil in the turbo will overheat and breakdown. a little at a time, but when the bad oil accumulates, the oil does not protect critical parts.

    7 months and 9k miles on my 09 335 tuned 5k miles. Waterpump went day after I bought it (dealer replaced with thermostat for free). Coils pack went when beating the shit out of it for like 4 or 5 hours (replaced plugs and coils, had them in my trunk) car runs great, no waste gate rattle runs 16psi. 79k miles.

    In the last 10 years I had an E93 330i, an X5, an E92 M3 and now an F82 M4. I never-ever had an issue with any of these, I never went to the dealer other than regular maintenance with any of these cars.

    A couple of years ago I had 2009 335i, the cooling lines cracked, the water pump failed, the high pressure fuel pump failed multiple times (at least that was covered by the dealership) the low pressure fuel pump sensor or something failed, 2 coils failed, and that was just about a year and a half of ownership. Bought a cadillac after and have had no problems whatsover.

    I would suggest not buying these German cars. Their manufacturers know this fact, i.e. more the car brakes, more the money they make from spares or services. Therefore their latest models (used) are cheaper than Japanese cars. You know now.

    The cost cutting doesn't just apply to the engine bay. Another thing with BMWs is that you HAVE to keep them in a garage away from sunlight and heat in order to preserve the interior/exterior. My 2005 E46's clear coat is peeling near the rear fender, it has developed rust on the panel below the trunk door, and the fabric covering the pillars is starting to sag as a result of the car sitting out in the driveway. My parents' 2005 Camry has NONE of these issues despite being exposed to the same conditions for 3 years longer than the Bimmer was.

    I spoke to an engineer for Nissan once and asked him, with all the tech advancement these days, why don't they build cars that last longer. He laughed and said that people think the car companies make their money from vehicle sales, but actually the big money is from the rest of the value chain, especially spare parts. He said the most difficult part in being a component engineer is designing a component that fails at exactly the desired time - being long enough for people to still consider the car reliable, but short enough to fit into the spares revenue model. Technically they could build cars that would outlast us... but then he'd be out of a job ;)

    1999 318i Sedan, 80k miles on it, no issues whatsoever in the past 9 months, oil service is the only maintenance related thing I’m gonna have to do soon.
    2009 BMW 520d, 145k on it, been over a year actually and again, no issues, oil service and that’s really it.
    I personally had no issues with my Bimmers, neither have my family members, as I always say, regardless of the brand, if you take care of your car he’ll take care of you too.

    My dads 2006 with just 103,000kms (60,000 miles) needs tons of repairs. Just didthe valve cover, oil housing, PS cap seal
    and VANOS hose. The old valve cover gasket broke into 3 pieces. My 2002 RSX original valve cover gasket was basically as flexible as new. Plus my valve cover is metal unlike the BMW

    My car with the N52 engine has the famous valve lifter ticking noise upon cold starts, which is really annoying. Other than that, there has only been a few squeaks in the steering wheel and blower motor, which has been easily fixed with some oil. Have had the car for 6 months and it's going really strong.

    I have owned 2 BMWs all 3 series I had problems fix them drive a month or 2 problem fixed it again I spent a lot of money.i love the cars I want another one.im so scared to buy a 750li because everyone I talk to even BMW mechanics say if I come buy the dealer ship any day of the week it's full of them and we all know how much they charge.but the same engine is in the 550i.so I'm stuck I only drove the car I had a 2005 325i with 101,000miles on it keep it a year it was a one owner sold it with 111,000 miles on it.for 4,600 dollars I spent 2500 on it in the time I had it.i love the cars but not the problems I believe the Benz c300 is better car and u don't have to work on benzes as much.just my opinion

      yea dont get the 7 series. my gf worked at bmw and said the samething. they are the worst bmw’s u can buy. they come into service daily. my gf drives a 550i and im in love with that car. less problems too. ill rather get 5 series over the 7 series.

    Fully agree with this video. I think my most reliable BMW was my e30 325i that I bought 20years ago when I was 21.
    Seems the newer the BMW'S the more unreliable and very costly to fix. My current e93 325i has only just got 90K on the clock and currently have injector problems, had airbag sensors and other things go wrong already. I only have a BMW as a second car over the years and a Ford as my daily car and the Ford's has been much more reliable and less to repair.

    Interpretation of your claims from an experienced automotive manufacturing and product design engineer (ME):
    1. Lots of heat, heat soak, etc.: The inlet snorkel that is disconnected is designed to provide ambient air temps directly to the airbox. By removing this and replacing with cone filters (like your car) WILL allow more hot air to be ingested into the engine. If you don't like it, put the OEM airbox back in.
    2. Expansion tank design: It is impossible to build a thermoset plastic tank without a seam. Due to the heat that it must withstand, you shouldn't use a thermoplastic, as it will soften due to the heat. You have to use a plastic epoxy to mate the two halves together.
    3. Coolant lines/ "boost tank": If these tanks were made of metal, then they would be at least 5 times more expensive. If the coolant lines were made of metal, then they also would be more expensive. Additionally, metal can fatigue, especially aluminum. The use of the nylon reinforced hoses is necessary to allow for the movement of the engine and to accommodate the vast range of temperatures that the vehicle is used in. 250°F
    4. A note on reliability on a modified car: The vehicle is designed specifically to operate with its intended OEM equipment. Whenever you modify something such as intake system, tune, etc., you are changed the system in which the engine package was designed to operate. That "Charge pipe" you pointed to, is not under any boost, and it only sees a short burst of pressure when the diverter valve opens to relieve boost pressure. When you demand these parts to work harder when boost pressure is changed (a tune), you are putting more stress on the components than it was originally designed for. Cars like this are still designed to meet a price point, and the use of plastics are necessary to meet these price points, especially when the consumer demands more and more technology. Did the E30 have turbos? NO. Did the E30 have 300+ hp from the factory? NO. Did the E30 have variable valve lift and cam timing? NO. Money's got to come from somewhere...

      Taha Monther older BMWs are definitely the best. These newer BMWs are being mass-produced in every numbered series from 1-8 now. All electrical components, and yes, cheaper materials. The era of making a 3,5, and 7, series' where in my pinion, BMWs best.

    I had the exact same car - 07 335i! On the positive side - it was extremely bad ass - a scary kind of fast. On the negative side - the twin turbos built up a lot of heat and tended to coke up, lose seals, and burn a quart of oil every 1,000 miles, at it's best.
    I went through months of almost living at the dealer. I did find an obscure bulletin on line addressing the problem. The fix was replacing both turbos (after just about everything else had been replaced). BMW paid for the fix at 70k miles. I was lucky.
    Despite that, I loved that car. We had a strange relationship. If it had been dependable - driving that car, was almost cargasmic!
    I'm a glutton for punishment! I traded the 335i in on a 2014 X1 335 MSport. I go through a lot of tires, but other than that I have had few problems!

    I owned (2) 335i E92 with N54. Definitely unreliable. My car was a certified pre-owned (CPO) purchased at 28K. Let me run down before 55K what problems I had.
    Driveshaft replacement (no I don't do burnouts on $300 plus tires (I had stag setup (sport pkg)
    Rear end differential issue
    Turbo problems (both) - Oil leak
    2x fuses blowing (seats affected) (and no aftermarket electronic upgrades)
    Plastic components failing (inside car) - cup holder, door rattles due to clips, cup holder rear armrest
    Interior blower fan failed (42K) (died after going into Costco on a 90º day and coming back outside to go home). No a/c. The techs repaired that issue which seemed to cause the head unit that controlled the radio and climate to malfunction upon them reinstalling things. The climate control used to activate itself randomly. Had to record it on my phone for anyone to believe it.
    Was my car maintained? Yes, by BMW. If it broke, I was at the dealer and they fixed it. I spent lots of time going there between maintenance for things that wouldn't break on a 1984 Buick like an interior blower fan. I have a current model 328i now (F30).. no issues accept the fuel pump that went out on my vacation to FL. Other than that its been solid. This guy made a good point... you can still maintain ur car and it will still fall apart around you.
    If you know better, it would be a great decision to never purchase the 335s until they are considered a proven model. I bought one twice! I purchased another one foolishly and wow... still problematic.
    I really really really liked my car, but I hate the BMW dealership service dept (profit center they call it) and having had to visit it so much I could be a first name basis with employees there. I'm done with BMW. Audi was a hell of a lot more reliable for me.

    The most reliable car I ever had was my first. A 1991 Ford escort van. It was that simple a car/van, it had nothing that could go wrong. Cost me two tyres ever two years.

      waste gate rattle doesn't really hinder much other than the sound though. It can be remedied with a permanent fix for 5 bills, or masked with tuning software as well.

    BMW owner really hurt over this video lmao, stop making up excuses about maintenance, maintenance is considered changing oil, fuel and air filters, transmission oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and fluid or filter basically should be changed regularly, there are also brakes and tires that should be changed regularly but as of those expansion tanks or all those stupid ass fucking coolant hoses with the plastic fittings at the end, that is fucking stupid and unreliable they always break when taking them off and god forbid you don’t use a new o-ring because they will leak 100% of the time, what happened to a regular hose and hose clamp, that is what is reliable and of course that is just an example but what this guy said is very accurate German cars are very unreliable and over engineered it’s stupid, the reason to own one of these is really if you have the money to spend on all the things that are gunna fail want to drive something that nice, and then not even that because Lexus, Infiniti, Lincoln, and Cadillac have some real nice stuff and are more reliable than these junks,

    He speaks the truth. I had a ‘08 328i, engine seals, bushings, coil packs, stereo went out. All the window actuators failed, all the door lock actuators failed, all the exterior rubber was brittle & breaking off, Car was in the shop more than on the road & it only had 50k miles on it. I still have a ‘99 Miata and everything on that car, including the rubber & plastic looks and works like it’s brand new. No more BMW’s for me. I’m sticking with Japanese cars.

    The check engine light lit this morning on my 435i. It is a 2014 model with 10,000 miles. The car went into limp mode and shifted hard. I drove to the dealer where they said an intake pipe broke. It is plastic and in a difficult place to repair. The bill was $ 1200. One more event like that and I go back to Lexus

    Very honest review. I'm not a fan of most BMW's but to be fair to them, turbocharging an engine will always add unwanted heat. Heat is one of the biggest enemies of engine components. Most turbocharged cars wear out faster then their non-turbo counterpart.

      Stephen Mireles was unable to drive as no fuel stored in the tank itself. Left at the dealer workshop for 2 weeks as they needed to order parts from Germany. My X3’s fuel filter has been cracked 2 times within 2 years.

    I work in a manufacturing plant which machines parts out of wood, plastics, and steel through various methods. We have numerous machines built from many different companies across the world. Coincidentally, it just so happens that the newer German equipment is undoubtedly the most problematic. They are constantly plagued by endless electrical and software issues. And due to the severe complexity of the engineering of these machines they are often not serviceable by in house maintenance staff. This typically requires a factory trained service technician to be flown out to remedy the problem which can leave the equipment down for days and the cost of the repairs can be astronomical. It all comes down to "over engineering" which does seem to be a staple of the German culture. They have great concepts, but execution and product longevity are too steep of a price for a great idea in my opinion.
