The problem isn’t the fuel. It’s not understanding the fuel. E10 or e5 is fine if you have the right fuel lines. You need fuel hose that is ethanol safe. I’ve used E10 in my mini since It’s been on the road. Because I used J30R9 hose.
Thank you Adam, and thanks for going through in more detail with me. You sir are my hero
As others have said, gotta replace all hoses in fuel system with ethanol rated types. I assume the mechanical fuel pump also has rubber seals/diaphragm? Unless replacement parts are available in the ethanol proof materials, your should think about replacing with an electric pump under the tank like later non-fuel injected cars have. Also, any rubber within the carb, like the float bowl shut off needle valve tip and the fuel jet o-ring should be renewed with Viton rubber types. I recently replace my float valve needle & seat with the Minispares all brass one that is ethanol proof. When I run E10 fuel on my '74 classic Norton motorbike, i find the idle runs a little higher than with non-ethanol fuel. So be aware you might need some carb tweaking, even different carb needle for best running.
Always carry a fire extinguisher in the car where you can get hold of it quickly.
Will be placed in the vehicle going foward
Might be worth changing those hoses to J30R9 to be safe - it also opens you up to the possibilty of using E10 if you're on a long journey and there are no E5 stations nearby.
I think that’s what’s I fitted
In Australia we have E10 but still have RON 91 and RON 95 & 98(premium), 98 costs about AUD$2 per litre. As others have suggested it's the ethanol that reacts with the rubber hoses. I use 98 premium in my classic cars.
That’s awesome you have such variety we are very limited here unfortunately
It will happen again unless like Adam stated you use J30 R9 grade hose or R12 on injection engines
Upgraded to the appropriate fuel line running great now
I run super petrol. Runs great.
The car runs great, just kept leaking
I have been using premium unleaded from shell, I don't use it everyday so its not too expensive.
Yes I use this and have had no issues at all.
I think it’s the poor quality hose, car alway ran great
@@WilliamMurfitt yes definitely the best to change the hoses!
Have you considered swapping the A series engine for something from a newer /ish car ?
Yes considering it for a future project to provide more reliability, performance and comfort for longer travels
I drain the tank if not using the car for a while and run the car until it’s empty of fuel. Could also fit a fuel tap near the tank and run the car to get rid of fuel in the lines.
That’s a good call, although I’m often lazy and would forget
When did you last refurbish the carburettor
Pre imm 2019, the cars done very little mileage since
All these problems can be put down to the appalling modern fuel. E10 is dangerous stuff and should not be used. We refer to it as weasel p*ss.. I had to use it once in our 1971 Mini; it blew the exhaust and ruined the carb settings ( tuned by a well known specialist..). Since then it won't idle properly unless the idle is set to 1200rpm. I'm even having issues with E5 now as well..
Never like bp always liked Esso 99 supreme and depends on your quality fuel hose
I’m somewhat limited to shell or bp due to few garages in my area. Poor quality hose for sure
