I still love it. As a young girl scout, we slept on that malls floor in pitch dark, so fun good memories!
Wow that’s crazy surprised you didn’t get arrested.
At Christmas you could go to any mall in America to see Santa. Only at the Orchards would you have a chance to meet Slippery Bob.
What or who is slippery bob?
Omg the legend himself!!
@@jordanderr6963 who is the legend?
Lol slippery Bob was a local perv that used to pay chick's for their panties and pee. Or so legend says.
@@TiltedTripodMedia Slippery bob was an old creep basically supposedly used to be a pimp back in the 70s and 80s a local celebrity for sure i used to see him at the beach when i was a kid checking out all the ladies while wearing his tiny speedo pretty sure he is dead now
I personally grew up in Benton harbor and there was a water pipe burse recently and in 2016 on of the studios what it was at the time flooded it's actually pretty sad I watch the mall die I grew up in
Slippery Bob was a legend
Died about 17 yrs ago
That would have been cool to see as doing research on him comes up with not much.
The Orchards only has one store left and they still didn’t think about closing the mall
Yeah strange it’s still open
It was a Sears & J.C. Penny & the stars are probably from holiday decorations
Thanks for the info
last time i was there the food court was reduced to several gumball machines.
the malls outside has been highly decorated by seagulls.
Jc penny's was down the closed end
Thanks for the info.
Amazingly enough, the owners just paid $350k in back taxes, so we're stuck with this eyesore for awhile.
Absolutely no reason not to bulldoze this festering eyesore. Even if the property were renovated, there isn't a customer base.
I agree the entire area is dead
It is still open for the few businesses left. Jo-anna fabrics has a new location.
This area needs better retail
Is anything left besides the mattress shop and the post office at this point?
@@Synth_Dragon when I visited there was the mattress store post office and some random clothing store. Basically nothing useful. It’s sad because the area has no 3rd place anymore unless you drive to Grand Rapids or south bend.
We had it all
@@permanent4869 we all did at one time and now it’s all gone and it’s sadly. Ever coming back.
I bought my pet rat in the pet store in this mall in the 90s lmao if I had to guess I got him in 96
That’s awesome. Wish that store was still there
@@TiltedTripodMedia Same, it went away in the early 2000s. It's over by the JCPenny or Sears area, can't remember which one but I think it's JCPenny. like one of the shops directly next to one of those big open mall entrance areas from the store itself. Pretty close to the entrance/exit. The wall used to be a tealish/bluish/greenish colour so if you see that next to a giant JCPenny entrance you probably found the old petshop if they didn't repaint it.
Also I was there when the tiger king guy was there. I was 17 at the time and thought the tigers were so fuckin cool.
@@Synth_Dragon wait tiger king was there? Oh wow I visited him once at his zoo in Oklahoma while visiting family in okc. This was shortly before all the crap hit the fan and he was put in jail. He was a kind man when I met him who loved animals. The animals all looked healthy and well taken care of. So sad that some people couldn’t leave him be and drove him mad.
@@TiltedTripodMedia This was a long time ago, like 2009? 2010? about a decade before the documentary. He did come to orchard mall during that time and I got to play with a little sleepy white tiger and a very active orange one that wouldn't stop biting my shoes lol. We got to pay to go into a little cage thing with baby tigers and they honestly didn't seem mistreated/in bad shape. The white one was very inbred though.
Just full of seagulls now. Only use is to use the parking lot to get to Meijers
Last time I went there was to the arcade to play laser tag and some old games.
I was very curious about that arcade and didn’t see attack of the pooping devils while I was visiting.
Arcade relocated if you wanna go there again
I heard the seagulls came back
Probably just left for the winter when I visited.
i would bet that having Best Buy, Walmart, Miejers, Target, Staples, Menards, Home Depot and Fairplain Plaza, all literally right next door is what killed this mall. The Target is history now as well.
That and it takes a certain local population level to support a mall, the local population currently is maybe about 2/3 of what it once was back in the 1970s when the mall was built. It is tough to compete in an area with a shrinking population.
I don’t think it was so much the other stores, but the population shrinking and the area becoming higher crime, because there are plenty of areas that have all those stores and a thriving mall but they’re usually in big cities
The mall has closed as of August 2024 temporarily
@@STBKSalty oh no 😨 I’ll be shocked if it’s not permanent.
There weren’t any seagulls though
@@STBKSalty yeah everyone talks about seagulls but I didn’t see it.
@@TiltedTripodMediaUpdate about The Orchards Mall, The Open Box Outlet store reportedly has permanently closed earlier this year, Top Nails moved, The Postal Office and the Boxing Center apparently disappeared as well, at this point the mall is closed indefinitely, there are virtually no stores there at all and the mall also looks like it's ready to permanently close, there is also some more graffiti as well, only positive thing is some potholes fixed
Also Carson's ceiling in one of the entrances has collapsed as well, Sears is reportedly moldy due to roof leaks and was boarded up in early 2021
As of September 2024, the mall is closed indefinitely, this is all the information for now
@@STBKSalty yikes. Thanks for the info. So sad that they have nowhere to shop anymore unless they drive to south bend. Glad I got to see the mall even if it was dead.
Time capsule
Yeah it’s so great but so sad
