I hope this video helps you with your canter and with introducing the counter canter! Also, take my free dressage rider assessment quiz! Here's the link! Https://quiz.amelianewcombdressage.com

I had my first lesson today in counter canter. I raced back to watch your video to get a clear picture in my head by seeing you demonstrate it. Thank you

Defining the prerequisites to counter canter is great. The steps working up to the shallow loop serpentine will be so helpful for my horse who in the past goes ahead and throws a flying lead change in when asked for a counter canter. Thanks so much for this video.

I haven't ridden dressage in nearly 8 years, and these videos have been such a great refresher! I can't wait to try some exercises with my horse this weekend. THANK YOU!!

I love that you bring up the shallow loops and the preparation into introducing the counter canter. Many people tend to have the mindset that tossing a horse into canter and flying around the ring is okay because "he did it!" when really these small building blocks are what set us up for the bigger things. Great video as always Amelia.

Very helpful. Am working on counter canter with my six year old and she has been confused as you point out. I like the small, progressive steps you outline. Thank you!

This is perfect as I'm going to start learning the First Level tests! It's also very helpful showing how to correct a break.

A question on the bend of the horse. With the counter canter, do you always want the horse slightly bent in the direction of the lead?

Exactly Lauren! This is theb difference between counter canter and cantering on the wrong lead! The outside flexion keeps them balanced.

Wow. A LOT of information. Now we just need those walk to canter transitions. 🤣

Hi Amelia! I struggle a lot with cantering my horse on the right lead as he has a bad habit of swapping his front legs when he gets unbalanced and/or frustrated (only on the right lead, we think due to an old injury). Do you have tips for helping a horse maintain the correct lead on their less balanced side? Thank you so much for always having the best tips and videos!!

My horse does the counter canter when I don’t ask, how would I help her with that?
