  • I'm down at a fantastic World War 1 exhibition in Belfast City Hall.
Here we have the largely untold stories of the Connaught Rangers and other Irish Catholic Nationalist soldiers who obviously fought for the British Army against the tyranny of Germany in the !st World War.
Until recently the military record of Belfast Nationalists in WW1 was part of the city's 'hidden' history. This was possibly because it was ignored by most Protestants and Unionists and also because many Catholics had no time or understanding for those in their midst who chose to fight in the British army uniform, under the despised Union flag.
Many of these soldiers would have been members of the Irish National Volunteers and would have been ardent supporters of the Irish Parliamentary Party who, under the leadership of John Redmond and Joe Devlin were campaigning for 'Home rule' for Ireland.ational volunteers
Nevertheless these later 'unwanted' men sacrificed much for the cause of freedom. Many gave their lives or were horriblvzxddddy injured. They got little thanks or glory for their efforts from both sides and Government back home in Belfast!
This exhibition is put on by the 6th Connaught Rangers Reseach Group 426 Falls Road Belfast BT126EN (07899 935931 )
