  • A child prodigy who survived a crippling fire at a young age, violinist Augustin Hadelich is a superstar soloist with the globetrotting itinerary and critical acclaim to prove it. Hadelich talks with CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jonathan LaPook about his affection for his instrument, and his long road to becoming, at age 39, one of classical music's most accomplished performers.

I saw him play Sibelius in Atlanta a few years ago. He played at the end of the first half and then did something I've never seen a soloist do before...he came out and sat in the audience and watched the second half of the concert!

One of my very favorite violinists of all time. His phrasing is so cerebral. I can hear the thought he puts in every line. Such an incredible musician!

I fell in love with Augustin as my permanent musical crush about 10 years ago at the Vail Bravo Music Festival, and like a groupie for the Grateful Dead or Paul McCartney, I see him every chance I get. His home recordings sustained me through CoVid lockdown. Most notableperformance was an encore he performed... a Bach piece intended for multiple violins which he played by himself -- all parts at once. I looked around the audience in shock to see if anyone else realized this feat, and nobody else seemed to notice. I was gobsmacked and have elevated him to near-deity status. I have yet to see/hear any piece of music that he has not breathed new life into.. His soul radiates and permeates the Strad and makes it sing. For a good sample, check out his Vail Bravo performance of Sibelius. I cried through this performance. Why do we listen to music? Because emotions and beauty surpass all language and connect us to the divine.

He is amazing. I remember watching him play Sibelius Violin Concerto and simply weeping in the second movement. Where many would attack certain passages, Augustin finesses. He is likely on track to surpass Heifetz, if he hasn't already done so.

The Mendelssohn has an enticing tone and The Paganini Caprice is beautifully phrased and clear. The violin sounds deep and resonant in the Sibelius and The Prelude starts off with the requisite imagination- Tchaikovsky has an exciting ending. Hadelich is an outstanding violinist and deserves the praise he's getting.

Big loving hug gorgeous music stars that make our lives a better place, web connection now is helping us becoming some kind of collectionists, there are so many beautiful things to love, starting with music tracks, no time for sadness or bad moments, there are so many great artists we can hang around with, no time for hatred, no time for those we do not like, hatred is such a shameful waste of time, these great performers remind us how human life is so short, we need to decorate it with the best of the bests...they could make us live other hundred years more and never have enough of listening good music and...very good performances indeed, big loving hug Maestro Augustin, never stop believe in ❤

the violin he plays is very interesting: a 1744 del gesu called the 'Leduc'.
it is believed to have been his last instrument. it is labelled 1745 and may have been completed by his wife.
it is a very unusual instrument. the ff-holes are super long and placed very high. the "handlebar' scroll is iconic and shows the hand of a master.
