  • David and Barbara’s home was destroyed by the Australian bushfires that ravaged the country across the summer of 2019 and 2020. The Cobargo Santa Project sees Breathe Architecture - with the help of Tradelink, Fisher & Paykel and Taubmans - create a new family home for David and Barbara.
Located in the town of Cobargo in south-eastern New South Wales, The Cobargo Santa Project was set into motion by the events of the Australian bushfires. Breathe Architecture reached out to a local RFS Fire Chief in New South Wales to offer assistance in the relief efforts, whereupon they were directed towards David and Barbara, a kind-hearted couple who - among 400 others in the area - had lost their home in the blaze.
Having seen the devastation caused by the Australian bushfires, a myriad of businesses generously donated materials to The Cobargo Santa Project. Amongst the donations were appliances by Fisher & Paykel, bathroom fixtures and fittings by Tradelink and over a dozen colours by paint company Taubmans. Fielders, BREC Energy, Form Brick, StudioAll, Accent Windows and Automatic Heating also made vital contributions.
Influenced by the impact of the Australian bushfires, The Cobargo Santa Project expresses a specific sensitivity to the external environment. Carbon-neutral in operation, the house is warmed by a hydronic heat pump with a buffer tank and sports solar panels on the roof. The roof is pitched in order to shed embers if another fire were to occur and has a sprinkler system installed along its ridge line.
The Cobargo Santa Project emerges as a testament to the altruistic nature of the design community, specifically when faced with the damage caused by the Australian bushfires.
