  • Miracles of God & Rain - Old Timey Fiddle Gospel Song
In October of 2012, Linda and I had the good fortune of meeting Ricky and Mary Driggers of Hawthorne, Florida and got invited to their Uncle Leroy’s for a cane grinding and syrup making.
Leroy and Clifford Jackson have owned and operated a local back road meat market - Roy’s Market in Starke, Florida - for decades and are famous for their fresh country sausage and home made cane syrup.
Experiencing a morning of cane grinding and syrup making at their place was a joy and a privilege.
One the most memorable aspects of that morning was meeting their friend and neighbor Herbert Hall whom everyone simply called Mr. Hall.
Mr. Hall is the older gentleman in the first few images of this video.
Mr. Hall arrived with the morning itself it seemed as he walked into the work area from an adjacent property.
Definitely a morning person, he was happy to show up and begin the task of grinding the sugar cane into juice with the others. He beamed with happiness and delight.
This was his element; morning time, farm work, being with others and the simple joy of being alive.
His spirit was infectious and enthused us all that day.
At one point, he shared his spirituality with us. He joyously spoke with a rare trait of clear eyed confidence combined with deep humility.
He said, “You know, the rains that come and this sugar cane growing are miracles. God gives us these things.”
He continued ,“Our ability to know what to do and work the land are miracles from God too.”
Mr. Hall said these things smiling as he fed sugar cane into the grinder.
He was right and the gravity of his words went beyond his merely saying them. You could feel it and it was good.
This was true witnessing that had its own authority. Mr. Hall spoke from a living truth that he embodied in his earthly walk.
He was also a playful man and at one point he and I sang excerpts from an old Grandpa Jones song together.
Mr. Hall and his words are what inspired me to write and perform this song.
Mr. Hall passed away a few years ago but his joyous smile and wise words will live forever in this song and video.
Roy's homemade sausages and his wife Clifford's homemade biscuits also inspired this song as well. Enjoying their amazing cuisine that morning with their fresh from the kettle cane syrup was truly amazing!
I'm heading to Roy's place again soon for some more sausages!

    Song Lyrics:
    Miracles of God and rain
    Help me raise my sugarcane
God gives me strength to work the land
    These miracles I understand
Early in the morn'n we begin
    Fellowship of neighbors and kin
God helps me to think and plan
A happy life in these Blessed lands
Syrup is boil'n sweet and hot
Can't wait to see how much we got
Roy's sausages are ready Clifford's biscuits are done
Time to have cane syrup fun
    Miracles of God and rain
    Help me raise my sugarcane

The music I sing along with and played the jaw harp to is an old timey fiddle tune called "Back Step Cindy" performed by a group called The Heartbeats.
They played this tune at the Galax, Virginia Fiddlers Convention in 1989.
I over dubbed vocals and jaw harp in my home studio.
Special thanks to Dave Wells for recording and posting this performance on his RUclips Channel: • The Heartbeats play "B...

    Artificial Intelligence Disclaimer:
Three of the images in this video I created by using the artificial intelligence image generator DALL·E 2 by Open AI. It was extremely helpful in providing me with well rounded footage to complete my pictographic narrative.
    1) First image of sugar cane and rainbow.
    2) Image of sausage, biscuits and syrup at time 3:35.
    3) Last image of sugar field with rainy sky.
