    One of a series of films made for General Motors by the Jam Handy Organization, 1949's "Heading up the Heavy Duties" shows the Chevy heavy duty trucks of the 1950s, built to "carry the load". These trucks (according to the film) were more efficient and heavier duty than their competitors thanks to design innovations affiliated with the frame, suspension, and power train. Some interesting Chevy heavy trucks are seen including cab over designs.
    Chevrolet's first major redesign post-World War II, the Advance-Design series trucks were billed as a bigger, stronger, and sleeker design in comparison to the earlier AK Series. First available on Saturday June 28, 1947, these trucks were sold with various minor changes over the years until March 25, 1955, when the Task Force Series trucks replaced the aging Advance-Design model.
    The same basic design family was used for all of its trucks including the Suburban, panel trucks, canopy express and cab overs. The cab overs used the same basic cab configuration and similar grille but used a shorter and taller hood and different fenders. The unique Cab Over fenders and hood required a custom cowl area which makes the Cab Over Engine cabs and normal truck cabs incompatible with one another while all truck cabs of all weights interchange.
    From 1947 until 1955, Chevrolet trucks were number one in sales in the United States, with rebranded versions sold at GMC locations.
    While General Motors used this front end sheet metal, and to a slightly lesser extent the cab, on all of its trucks except for the Cab Overs, there are three main sizes of this truck: the half-, three-quarter-, and full ton capacities in short and long wheelbase.

    Built so well that some are still on the job today. Easy to service and maintain. Long lasting quality build.Economical use of fuel. Ease of driving and climate controlled comfortable cabs with good vision. I know I still drive and use my 1951 Chevrolet 1/2 ton pick up.

      Because back then gas engines were used in virtually all medium duty trucks , and even +/- half of large trucks .
      By the '70s most large trucks had gone diesel , and medium trucks transitioned during the '80s .
      But yes , of those trucks and equipment that were diesel , the GMC two strokes were popular .

      If you wanted a diesel-powered truck from General Motors in 1949, you went down the street to the GMC Truck dealer...or, as the ads suggested, you "(got) a REAL truck."

    • @sgtyork9330
      @sgtyork9330 5 лет назад +6

      Not quite. Chevy trucks used Chevrolet engines and had a different frame structure. You can't interchange the frames and the engines are slightly longer with different bores and strokes. GMC offered and larger variety of engine displacements. In 1955 when the V-8 engines were introduced, Chevy used the 265 small block V-8 while GMC used a Pontiac 287 V-8 engines. 1955 through 1959 GMC trucks used a totally different dash and nothing would interchange as far as instruments, heater controls, or the radio if so equipped. I know these things because I've owned and worked and many of these models of trucks. I still own two 57 Chevy half ton trucks. One of them is a factory V-8 and has factory installed 4 wheel drive. 1957 was the first year that Chevy offered the factory installed 4x4. Prior to that they were dealer installed.

    • @filianablanxart8305
      @filianablanxart8305 3 года назад +1

      Back Then , Chevy & GMC trucks had substantial differences .
      By the late '60s , GMC pickups were simply rebadged Chevys with different grills . By the '70s , Chevy medium and heavy trucks were rebadged GMCs .
      Why the duplication ? Simply because in small towns and rural areas there often weren't both Chevy and GMC dealers in close proximity . Ford Dealers commonly sold both cars , and Ford trucks . So GM didn't want to totally surrender the marketplace to Ford in towns with a Chevy dealer, but not GMC .
      But finally , in the '90s , GM phased out the medium duty trucks under the Chevy badge , leaving them to GMC .
