There is what, where, when, and why, but none of those, so meaningless, so fulfilled, stand so unanswered as the _how_ that orbits this passion, Bach, and everything and everyone else around him. And Bernie, you brought us to this level of unfathomable emotional intangibility only masters such as yourself and Bach can craft through art. You made it tangible. Thank you!
The counter says this has been looked at 333 times... but the counter is wrong, because I personally have listed to this at least ten times - but offline, so the counter does not show it. And I shall be listening to it at least ten times more - it is *excellent*, BSG. A wonderful performance of music that moves me to tears. Bravo.
Thank you so much! So good to see you here (the trip to Methuen, esp returning, is daunting these days.) I think no one alive is in a better position to appreciate this recording than you. RUclips is effectively "where I play" these days...I see you've checked out _Wer durch Liebe_ , but do check out the rest-- there is much (original) organ music from relatively recent years. The days of those two performances were the greatest days of my life.
Good to hear from you. I moss you at Methuen but I understand. I am in charge of the summer concerts now and Fall Variety Series which I revived. We are building our audience. Always loved your music and happy to see you are still active. I will research more of your recordings. I had an older brother die last Saturday so will be busy this week. Plenty to do.
@@richardouellette8785 Sorry for your loss. Maybe I will make an attempt to visit Methuen once this season, but not a promise.... Again, glad you finally heard this and like it. As you can see, there are a couple of other organ solo performances posted since (I don't like the organ 4-hands one at all), a classical guitar rendition, and an amazing 9-track vocal overlay by a single woman.
That is one of the most beautiful piece of all time ! And your arrangement is so incredible ! I can feel in it all the pain, suffering of the passion ! Incredible !
I am not familiar with this piece and not usually a listener to organ music but this is stunning. I found it powerful and moving, (it gave me goose bumps), and by the end I felt quite sombre.
Thank you! Yes, it is maximally tragic (and, as I say, not "organ music"). The St. Matthew Passion of Bach is, in many people's opinion, the greatest work of musical art of history. Its intensity and gravity of emotion, drama, beauty, and, importantly, the application of those to convey, and preach, a specific theology (whether it's one you affirm or not) set it apart. It's not something you listen to, or even attend, but something you give yourself to for the rest of your life. The movement I play here is "just its opening track". Yes, it is that great. Do investigate!
!!!! Knowing how you know this movement as well and intimately as do I, and what a terrific musician you are, I am very, very deeply touched by your comment. Please check out my other postings (my own compositions) on my channel; I think you will like them. Greetings and thanks from another disciple of the _Thomaskantor_ !

Hello, Bernie, I realize that there's a long time that we haven't talked. I hope you are fine. Today I am enjoying your arrangement and transcription of this very beautiful first movement of Bach's "Matthäus-Passion", a true monument in itself. 25 years ago I bought in Curitiba one exemplar of the recording I consider the ever best: Vox DL 6070 with Fritz Lehmann. Congratulations, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from me and my wife!
Hi Marcelo! I am well. I do not know that recording; is it still available on CD? Other than Wöldike's mentioned above, Karl Richter's appeal to me -- I guess I'm stuck in the 1960;s.
This is so beautiful BSG!! Not only is your arrangement good, you play with passion! I’m sure Bach would be proud! Hope to see more from you! (As I was new to the "site")
@@BernardGreenberg I mean it’s so nice to hear the piece played slowly, and that the early music movement (once interesting and musical), who perform this like a Kentucky Derby racehorse, are now and have been infecting all musicians to imitate them.
i love the slow tempo on this, gives me the time to totally immerse into it and become truly empty
Staggering doesn’t even begin to describe this. Earth-shattering perhaps? 🧡
This was the movement that got me into baroque music and music as a whole and it changed my entire life!
@@Nooticus Wow, that's great. There is no greater musical movement IMO, as I said. Thanks!

I can imagine what an emotional experience it was to play that. Bravo!
Not to mention reliving the experience through the magic of recording…
Indeed. I felt as a priest consecrating a sacrament of Bach to him. It was. Thanks!
