    Finally! I have been worried about him since not seeing a post in some time! He looks great (if not a little chunky) and still has his beautiful, level "hackney" stride goin' on. I have missed seeing news of him. Thank you for the update. And- ( Please do not let the knackers take him away one day, he is too smart not know what he is there for once he arrives..... and because we all love him.)

    How does William manage to become younger and younger every year? He looks better than ever. For a Hackney (I take it he's purebred?) he doesn't seem to show much of the typical age related back issues. How are his hind legs? No arthritic symptoms at all? Im a vet out here in the real world so I can't help but to instinctively notice his fine hind leg mobility and unlabored pace.

    • @hackneysaregreat
      @hackneysaregreat  7 лет назад +4

      He is in every aspect still like a 5 years old, and yes, he is a purebred hackney.
      In many cases a lot of damage is done in their youth by starting way too young (3 years and younger) and letting them do way too much (including showing).
      I know nothing of his past, but my guess is, that he did not do much work in his younger years.
      I give him extra (2 pounds) senior food these days and 24/7 in his wonderful meadows helps a lot too.

      @thominaduncanson8003 7 лет назад +3

      +hackneysaregreat -If only more people would follow the old ways...like never starting a horse for riding until they are at least 3 years old, and only light riding on grass at that. Lovely boy, your William!

    • @wirinaholstein4076
      @wirinaholstein4076 7 лет назад +3

      Where I live its illegal to try and take a horse into work before they're 3 years old and for slow growing breeds (we have some Northern Tundra breeds) until they're 5. It doesn't matter if they're used for riding or racing or driving. No work until they're fully grown.

    • @wirinaholstein4076
      @wirinaholstein4076 7 лет назад +2

      If I find that a horse is worked too hard or young, I will command X-rays and if they prove that the horse isn't fully grown or is recently fully grown but have been working for a while, I will give owners the choice to pull the horse out of use until its grown and its bone density and joint strength is as it should be. if they don't or I suspect they dont I report it to the police and have them put a restrain on the owner and forbid them to work the horse until I can clear them by X-rays. There is no way of of saving a horse that has been broken down from it was almost a foal, so preventive measures needs to be aggressive I feel.

    • @wirinaholstein4076
      @wirinaholstein4076 7 лет назад +1

      Extra food targeted for the individual horse and full-time in the field, is every horse's dream and the very best quality of life and natural use of a senior horse body. William has been lucky. Or perhaps he was neglected before you rescued him. He does show the typical "symbiosis seeking behavior" many horses have if they've been neglected or abandoned too early on. He's bonded and trust you a lot and have a bit of possessive feelings about you when other horses are around and he reacts quickly if left standing alone for a moment and shows anxiety if suddenly can't see you. And if William was just left on a mud field until you got him, that could be the reason he hasn't been worked too early. I have a 33 year old pony and a 28 year old former racehorse. Same recipe - my own specially mixed senior feed and lots of it and then all-around field time. With the amazing care William gets, he could easily live a very long time still. He seems very happy.

      @LindaEll89 6 лет назад +2

      @Marsha: He was neglegted by his last owner, and has a deep trauma of farriers. There are much video's you can watch and so you can see William's story.

    William doesn't like that bit. He is chewing the whole time. He was chewing in your video 3 years ago and he's chewing in this video. But he doesn't chew in the videos when he's loose in the meadow. He looks good enough to go without a bit. I would try just a hackamore and see how he does. Also, Her stirrups are too long. Her toes should never point down. Love ❤ William. He's so beautiful and has such fluid movement. xoxo

      Kareem’s: I don’t know of a single horse that enjoys or likes a bit. All bits are painful in a horse’s mouth and not needed.

      Dumb fuck you dont know the horse fuck off

    • @TaraCicora
      @TaraCicora 6 лет назад +4

      scratchgolfer12 No...a passive bit in the mouth is just there. I doubt they love it, but it doesn't cause pain unless it doesn't fit correctly, the rider is poor (at which case the bit is no longer passive in the mouth), or there is something wrong with the animal's mouth itself. That being said, bitless bridles can also harm horses. Let's focus on using the correct tool(s) needed for each animal and not use blanket statements.

      Im not really a great rider jo, this video wasnt ment to show a perfect rider and a perfect horse.
      Just to show that that really scared horse from years ago is also a sweet recreational riding horse.
      Not that is matters anymore, i had to let him go past november.

      Sydney Patmore i havent ridden in months this was both my and williams first time again. Had an ankle injury that is still not fully healed, cant have to much weight on it.

      Lara de wit it was meant to say bad not baf. The f and the d are next to each other. For not riding for months you both did great.
      It's the same with everyone. If your stirrups are to long, it causes your leg to swing

    i would be doing a lot of stretch work at this stage he has not developed the right muscles to carry himself in what we call an ( outline ) he needs top accept the bit then you wont get the ristanatance showing in this video . soft hannds non of this sea soring on the mouth it is no good only teches him to go behind the vertical

    • @laraw8601
      @laraw8601 4 года назад

      At the moment you mentioned this, William was no longer with us. He got almost to the age of 26.
      Before this video, William lost an extreme amount of weight. The vet said it could be his age or his guts not working like they used to.
      In this video however, he gained weight again and if i remember correctly, this was the first or one of the first times on his back again in a long time.
      I havent ridden him much after that, but i am glad there i have this video memory of us.
