Im only 17 but this is giving so many memories. Especially the bikes i remember them Especially in the London 2012 olympics on day 1 Mens Road Race. Glitterballs just gives all the good retro strictly vibes. Not many memories of the 2014 commonwealth games but definitely remember the ident and the opening ceremony. Even stadium was awsome. But out of all of them Capes is definitely my number 1
Happy 5th anniversary to the Ident Review! Also, most of the BBC One "Circle" idents are probably some of the greatest idents of the 2000s with a strong return to the circular motif used for the BBC One idents from the past.
Happy 5th anniversary to the Ident Review, and early congrats on nearly hitting 30k! It's this show that led me to your channel almost 2 years ago and it's been nice seeing the evolution of it all! Seeing the 100th episode, the expansion of AMTV, all the documentaries and shows like Sunday Catch-up and Video Scaries, and even seeing you have a role in a Doctor Who audiobook! This journey has been great! And I wish nothing but great things to come in the future!
The last program to be broadcasted with these idents was the 2017 Robbie Williams concert from their annual “Rocks Big Ben Live” New Year’s Eve programming.
Fun fact the second titanic ident was the first thing shown after the final analogue channels were shutdown. It almost feels like some kind of commentary
These are my favourite idents ever because of the timeless and beatiful visuals. They could have stayed until to the BBC rebrand and still looked fresh. Aldo, congrats on 5 years of the ident review! It's one of my favorite series on RUclips and I am so glad you've celebrated with reviewing this ident set, since I've been looking forward to this for a long time. I also really like your unscripted discussion videos on the rebrands etc. Early congrats pn 30 subs btw!
The Circle Idents are my favourite. I have no memory of the balloon idents and have a very small memory of rhythm and movement idents but have strong memories of the Circles the less said about the Oneness Idents the better.
Happy 5th birthday IDENT REVIEWS. I saw some of the Circle ones but wasn't too familiar with them. They were introduced after I went to University and I only had TV for one year - so knew some of them. Not many. The magical forest is my favourite as it was used alot at Easter.
I remember noting how for the Blue Planet II idents, the O in BBC One would zoom into view before the rest of the wordmark faded in. I did not expect to be noting how the O forms in the idents again but lo & behold, Christmas 2016. For those standard idents, while the BBC One logo was still centered, the O took form from a thin, animated line, circling around before the rest of the wordmark appears. From that, I knew that I smelled the arrival of Oneness, and that Who ident effectively confirmed it. Those Christmas 2016 idents had the BBC One logo animate to visibility on screen to transition us, or prepare us for some, to the wonderously worthless (apparently, I don't really have much of an opinion) world of Oneness. On a more positive note, I distinctively smiled as the Christmas '09 ident appeared. Though I did not see the programme as it aired as I haven't likely heard of Who by that time, I remember watching the variant with David Tennant's continuity announcement for The End of Time on RUclips. Overall, congratulations to five years of The Ident Review!
I didnt watch bbc one during these idents as i couldnt speak english yet when these were in circulation. And yet they are still really iconic for me. I remember watching a few movies not understanding anything on bbc one with these idents
Well, what an utter joy to journey through 10 years of idents. This video is brilliantly structured and was entertaining throughout. Some personal favourites out of these idents were Hippos, Forrest, the Love idents (both red and spring), the Wallace and Grommit christmas ident, the Doctor Who Christmas ident and the Gruffalo ident. Something about each of these gave me a huge wave of nostalgia and magic which I love. I'm so proud of you for the amount of time and effort you've put into creating this review. 👏🏻❤️
Darn this holds the record for the second longest Ident Review episode on this channel as compared to the 2-hour 100th Episode special on Tuesday May 10, 2022 one year ago today
Will you go over the full BBC1 Oneness 2017-2022 idents in a future episode? Look I know you hate that ID package and that's fine its your opinion, but you sorta teased that episode at the end saying "We'll go over that ident package saving it for later for another time".
There was a Doctor Who version of "Capes" that was shown before the 50th anniversary in 2013, the ident was interrupted by Matt Smith and showed a Dalek shooting at the Cyclists.
The Circle idents are my second fave ident set from BBC1 - my fave being the Balloon idents It only seems like yesterday I was seeing these for the first time and they're now around 15+ years old! These aired during the majority of my teens and into my early 20s and it's made me feel a little old watching these back (although I'm only 30 so not old at all) My faves are Neon, Capes and Helicopter (with the original music) - in general, I preferred the original form of the idents when they aired between 2006 and mid-2009. After that they changed them to the edited format with most of them getting new music and that's how they stayed until Oneness came in at the start of 2017
Will you do one for s4c dragon (1993-2006) and s4c magnetic (2007-2014) someday? I never thought they would also have a comparable set of idents to the other Channel 4.
I remember a lot of these but in their shortened versions on BBC America during what I consider that channel's glory days (which are long since gone - talk about channel drift, oof)... good times!
If I remember rightly the launch of the Christmas 2012 idents, had. Big launch on the One Show outside of Television Centre, it was meant to appear on the buildings, but it was a foggy night and as a viewer you saw very little
The Circle series work mainly because the final image is a brilliant construction. Whenever you see a circle, your eye is most immediately drawn to its centre; or mathematically speaking, its focus. And at the centre is a strong feature, the BBC one logo of the era, the "o" forming a hub where the logo provides the channel information clearly. Then once you've got that you can enjoy the rest of the presentation. The BBC won Wales idents show it off even more, shoving everything to the left so the "o" can remain central - in turn, the onesie idents not doing that show how it can go wrong. And that's why the Lens idents don't work - they're the exact opposite. The channel information is shoved away to the periphery of the circle, while the focus point is cluttered as the images change across it. They end up coming across as weak, unfocused and distracting. It's partly deliberate - the corporation are purposely trying to downplay the individual channel identities to compete with Amazon Prime and Netflix - but it just isn't a great idea. It feels like they wanted to call back to the Circles without understanding what made them good, and decided it was just "people like circles". Least favourite Circle ident - Football. I love the sport, and I constantly saw it ahead of Match Of The Day... which is probably why it rankled. The balls are distracting across the centre, and when you focus on them being passed and realise it's the same EXTREMELY short segment (sub-1 second) being played backwards and forwards in succession... grr. The strongest of these idents are the ones where they keep the centre simple and solid. Favourites - Neon (maybe the best illustration of the "o" as hub concept) and Ashes To Ashes (those circular lens flares reinforcing the Circle idea). Most memorable - Kites, particularly when it was interrupted to be replaced with the 1973 Mirror Globe ahead of Life On Mars.
I liked these when they first began, the first batch kind of reminds me of my uni days, especially the music! My favourite has to be the hippos but another ident I loved from the circle set was the moon ident, as you say it's a shame that one didn't last long because I loved the arrangement of the music for that one too. What I didn't like was when the idents were edited down a few years later with different music, it didn't give the same feel as the original longer versions. Good idents though all in all, shame they were eventually replaced with those awful 'Oneness' idents!🙂
Thank you for the video. I'm surprised you missed the one with the big hot air balloons floating by the white cliffs and a lighthouse. (Lighthouse helipad also as a circle) Maybe this was before 2006?
Lawn is very Stepford Wives. If you know you know. I hated how these great idents were cut down and given lesser music in most cases. But the Helicopter updated music was the only one that improved on the original music. My only other criticism was some idents not having the circle around 'BBC one' for the whole ident.
The Gruffolos Child clip. It seemed to happen in a weird place, as the announcer mentioned Staff struggling to save lives in the burning hospital in Casualty in 45 minutes maybe the programme before was for kids
this might be a stretch but, is there any possibility of doing the special variants of that ever iconic bbc 1 balloon (the solar eclipse one is a personal favourite)
The thing that bugs me the most about nearly all the David Attenborough documentary idents is that like almost none of them actually have a circle involved, it's just the logo on top of a standard wildlife background.
Hey Adam! Can you Explain the France 2 2002-08 Jingle Pub? Those Idents* are Pretty Outstanding 🎉 *the Word of "Ident" as Alter of "Jingle Pub" are Pretty Basic and Faster.
It’s shame they shortened the idents so that the circle formed quicker as you lost lots of the story behind the idents. The wall of death bikers is a perfect example of this as the original had a lot more drama and the music was more dramatic. Kites was another one which lost something. The revamp of the music worked with some but lost it for others. I think the only ident not to loose it’s original sound track was the hippos as it was so popular with the public. Great video but I’ve got to disagree about the puffer fish ident. I think it’s amazing when you realise that the fish actually made that, it’s not CGI. No one knew that puffer fish did this until this documentary. The detail in it. I think the dramatic music works as it’s that tiny little fish making that perfect circle, it would be like one person building the Albert hall on their own with no plans or tools
The circles idents were far superior to "Oneness" idents which replaced them in 2017 - just shows you have terrible a channel can fall in terms of quality in a relative short space of time. I loved the circle idents.
ChumsFan Home Video AMTV releases will be: The Ident Review, The History of Doctor Who Viewing Figures, The Ident Review Extra, The Sunday Catch Up and The NOW Review

oh hell yeah, 1 hour ident review. Today’s gonna be a good day

Insane to think this show is now 5 years old, and that the BBC One circles lasted as long as they did. Still, love the episode!
The BBC One Children In Need Spots Ident is Great But The Music Is In Pal Pitch
The last program to be broadcasted with these idents was the 2017 Robbie Williams concert from their annual “Rocks Big Ben Live” New Year’s Eve programming.
Fun fact the second titanic ident was the first thing shown after the final analogue channels were shutdown. It almost feels like some kind of commentary
Ooh this holds a lot of nostalgia. I don't really watch TV anymore but BBC1 was almost always on in my childhood home.
The tall ships ident at the beginning is actually the former BBC Northern Ireland logo until 2022.
These are my favourite idents ever because of the timeless and beatiful visuals. They could have stayed until to the BBC rebrand and still looked fresh.

The Music From Lawn Is Not From The Ident Hippos Now That Music Is Sad
The Circle Idents are my favourite. I have no memory of the balloon idents and have a very small memory of rhythm and movement idents but have strong memories of the Circles the less said about the Oneness Idents the better.
These are literally timeless, they still look sharp and modern today.
Absolutely
I was born in 2010 and may not have been born in the UK or British in general, but I like this ident package.
Happy 5th birthday IDENT REVIEWS. I saw some of the Circle ones but wasn't too familiar with them. They were introduced after I went to University and I only had TV for one year - so knew some of them. Not many. The magical forest is my favourite as it was used alot at Easter.
Seeing more of these - it looks like they attempted to have 2 phases of the Circle Idents, the second phase being less successful...
I remember noting how for the Blue Planet II idents, the O in BBC One would zoom into view before the rest of the wordmark faded in.
