Taking shame away from this disease is so important. To humanize dementia and bring much needed dollars it had to be a superpower, I can only see Bruce Willis in that role. That's when I cracked. As I fixed her pillows to straightened her head (more for me than for her), I said. I love you mom. My mother was diagnosed with unspecified dementia two years ago and I can feel Emma’s pain through the screen. No one teaches you how to walk with your loved one on this journey, especially when you have small children or other priorities that often conflict with the emotions and responsibilities that come with being a care giver/partner. I’ll keep Emma, Bruce and all families dealing with this in my prayers ❤

My father passed away from lewy body dementia. Its the same form that Robin Williams had. It was very difficult for him and us. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. He lost the ability to walk, his mind was completely confused and he hallucinated alot of things and people who were not there. He was a very intelligent man, he had an almost photographic memory. He loved to learn new things and losing his mind was very difficult and scary for him. It almost took my mother with him. She had been in the hospital for 2 weeks as well when he passed because she was so broken, not eating or taking care of herself. It broke me mentally because I provided alot of the hands on care until I couldn't do it anymore. I had no support with it because unfortunately there is not enough help and support for people and families who are going through these illnesses because our healthcare sucks. Unless you have money, insurance offers very little support.

In a case like this one, money only helps with respite care so the family can get a break. “Spare a thought for the poor” is exactly what Emma is doing, giving her support to the association they mentioned and having the second woman come speak about the disease. I hate when people bring up wealth as though it’s something magical that keeps people from suffering. No amount of money will help as long as there is no cure and the family STILL has to watch their loved one suffer the progression of this disease toward their death. Being poor doesn’t make the suffering “worse”, either.

Having had my mother and wife suffer from dementia its a very difficult thing to deal with for the family. You find yourself repeating the same things again and again, filling in the gaps. In normal life you do something and move on, dementia sufferers don't move on so you find yourself in a loop, reliving the same scenario again and again and again. As a carer you start to question your own sanity after awhile. You have to take over every task, from paying the bills to shopping to cleaning and cooking. My wife lost the ability to turn on the washing machine so she'd wash cloths in the sink. The sad reality is things will never improve, just a slow decline until they don't even know who you are anymore.. Its depressing just thinking about what I went through so I'd urge anybody dealing with this not to suffer in silence, get as much professional help as you can...

Thank you for your willingness to bring the awareness of FTD. My 59 year old sister passed in March from FTD after 3 years from diagnosis. The hardest part was getting a diagnosis. Her internist would not listen to us. She diagnosed her with anxiety and wouldn’t refer us when we asked for a CT scan or a referral to a neurologist. The other issue was no one had worked with FTD patients. Finally, the care for a patient with FTD is extremely expensive. I hope that more internal medicine doctors will learn more about the signs of FTD and take in what the family is telling them about the patient with the symptoms of FTD.

I've been watching, and being supportive of a neighbor whose husband was diagnosed with FTD a couple years ago. Grateful that she reached out early to get support from other's dealing with this. Having his personality change so much has been so difficult as well as the extra physical care he requires. 🙏🏼 (He was ~60 when diagnosed, my age too)

Thanks for helping your neighbors! My husbands personality change has been so hard, frustrating for me, and sad. So hard! Your an angel helping. Any help is a blessing! People don’t understand what it’s like for the family. God bless you❤

Bruce is indeed a beloved actor. It's sad that he is struggling with this illness.
    He has a great wife.
She's beaming with beauty. Clearly, she had a good heart for standing by her husband and speaking up to help others. Bless her heart. 🙏🏾

My mom lost the ability to verbalize her thoughts because of mini strokes and dementia. It was heartbreaking to watch. It's tragic that a stellar actor like Bruce Willis is going through this.
