  • Mini BV or mini Boina Verde Tactical knife from Cudeman of Spain. The Mini BV is a tactical knife with integrated barbed wire cutter. It is the smaller model of the Cudeman 299 B both designed by Angel Corts. What's not shown in this video is that I submerged a MOVA steel blade in seawater for over 8 hours with no signs of corrosion to any part of the blade. Manufactured with MOVA steel. This steel has a high carbon content, (0.59) vanadium, chromium, Si, P and a high Molybdenum content.
    It can come with either a Kydex sheath with a Tek Lok or a leather scabbard. There is an included fire steel and striker with this knife. I got rid of the lanyard on the striker and attached some shock cord to hold the striker into the scabbard more securely and with this method the striker doesn't rattle around in the holder, so basically it's silent.
    The blade profile is a sabre or Saber hollow grind, which of course makes it good for cutting as there is little resistance.
    I stuck this sucker in a crack in a cliff face and placed my entire body weight of 76kg on the handle to see if it would fail. That's a non SI force of 7000KN. It didn't even bend!! A tough Tactical knife.
    It's not a knife for big handed people though as the handle is quite small.
    Addendum:
    NOT 7000N! But 700N
    Of course I can not multiply approx 70Kg X 9.8 m -2 and come up with approx 700N. I wrongly said 7000 N ie 7KN which is obviously not correct LOL and was pointed out by a viewer.
    Ok after some time using this mini BV what is really lacking is the Kydex sheath there is very little room to grab the knife especially in a combat situation, there is simply too much Kydex around the grip, totally unecessary IMHO.
    Enjoy.

    Really liked the review; just a little comment: the load on the blade is around 700 N, not 7000! Just multiply the mass in kg by acceleration of gravity, 9.81 m/s^2 more or less. I'm sure you knew that, but wanted to point it out. Again, thanks for the review!

      Yeah you're right, stupid me I can't multiply approx 70 X 10 (9.8ms-2 )! I won't admit then to a post doc in applied physics LOL! Many thanks, I must have got too carried away with this LOL. I'll put a note up in the description. Yeah it would have been some super strong blade to resist a 7KN LOL! Many thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @BushCampingTools

      You can do a lot with this blade since it's shape is also good for skinning game. So it could be taken hunting but it is not for butchering as it is too short and no great for fishing as there is no pointing tip for gutting plus too short and fat for filleting etc and or cutting thru large fish. Basic camping and utilisation of man made rubbish eg left over wire etc. this knife will be ok for that. Possible to split small bits of timber, strike steels, cut up food (only because it is hollow ground, since it is very thick blade).

    Hello there! Can you please tell me if the Teck-Lock can be turned for horizontal carrying? I´m not sure if the holes are in the right distance for that.
    Thx for the great Videos! I bought the 299B BV because of you and i love it :).

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  8 лет назад

      +FoRestInPeace Hi that's great to hear you are liking the 299B! Ok so to answer your question re the mini BV Tek Lok repositioning; the answer is unfortunately no. I just tried it and the holes are indeed in the wrong position i.e. they are too close to allow for this change of position. This is a nice little knife but remember it IS a little knife. So bear in mind your hand size if you are deciding on this knife.

    • @forestinpeace265
      @forestinpeace265 8 лет назад

      +Bush Camping Tools Thx for the quick answer! You confirmed my guess, it looked like it wouldn´t fit, but i was not sure. So i will go for the leather version i think.
      And a little knive is what i´m looking for. I like the shape and it didn´t look so dangerous. I dont want to scare people when i use it or carry it on my belt (so the leather-sheath option fits better anyway) sometimes in my area, there are a lot of people around even when u hike in the woods. I have no idea why, but people are more scared of big knives ;).

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  8 лет назад

      +FoRestInPeace Hi yeah, yes I know exactly what u mean regarding people and knives and having something small and unobtrusive can make a big difference, plus not to scare the "do gooders' from calling the cops and spoiling ones day out. When I'm in a similar situation I'm almost never carrying a large knife and if i am it is inside my pack.

    • @forestinpeace265
      @forestinpeace265 8 лет назад

      Hi! Absolutely!! I often have a bigger knive in my pack also, you never know ;). But for quick access it´s sometimes annoying to put the backpack off. Someone can argue that a victorinox or a opinel or something like that will do the job also, and it´s right. But i think (and testet it) for a lot of situations, especially in the woods, a small, one handed fixed will do the job much better.

    Hello , I wanted to know if this based on your experience can be a great survival knife / field , the steel used is good ? He takes long thread ? It does not rust if used in humid environments and when in contact with water ? So according to you is a knife which you can entrust my life ?

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  8 лет назад

      +Michele Trekking Hi for me this knife is strictly military and not survival material. yes it's a nice knife but the handle is way too small unless you have very small hands. Unless mounted for the reverse grip, extraction can be slow as well from the scabbard. It's song against bending moments, can be used to skin but not much point really and as I said a big negative is it's small size. Even smaller than my STRIDER MFS (I have original model in ATS34 over 15 years old) BTW that Strider has really been my (almost) survival knife . I think a survival knife doesn't have to be some huge chopper just a knife which allows the individual to maximise all their knife handling skills with, and of course under duress (both knife and user) to be able to not have the user having to worry about the knife failing in any way. The knife's grip must be just as good as the usefulness of the blade.

    • @micheletennis87
      @micheletennis87 8 лет назад

      I'd be willing to take mt 5 I would then know if it takes a long knife ? and if it is robust ? when used in bsgnati environment it does not rust ?

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  8 лет назад

      +Michele Trekking I haven't used the MOVA for long term near the coast so I don't know how good it is against long term exposure to seawater if not cleaned regularly (which one always should do- unless water is really scarce- and in that case the last thing one will be concerned about is the kind of knife they are carrying. As for the N695/440C used in the 299B, this steel has long been proven in Diving knives (all of mine included too) as to it's durability against corrosion.But still needs to be maintained. These kinds of things are rarely a issue when in a real survival situation.

      I would take a knife to me hard all my life, I'd rather spend more money once for a high-quality knife that take different over time ... I am torn between F1 and Pro CudemanMt5 , between these two apart from the price like quality which do you recommend ?

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  8 лет назад

      I've never used either one sorry. I had the F1 (Fallkniven) in my hands several times but did not buy it, and the San Mai type blade is good but the handle for me a bit rubbery for the cost of this knife and the rather poor plastic sheath as standard. I'm sure there is a big difference in price too between these two knives. Certainly no bolts to drop out is a good idea, also the Japanese are world experts at producing laminated blades of which I own many. It is really difficult to compare each of those knives as one has a convex edge whilst the MT5 has a flat beveled edges also two very different types of steel. You must hold either one and make your decision LOL. Sorry can't be of any more help with your quandary. Trouble is there is a paradox of choice when it comes to choosing a knife. Some of my best knives are getting onwards of almost 40 years use! I hope some of the ones I have now can also go at least another 30 years LOL!

      Hi no problems, yeah, great blade but if you have hands any bigger than say 8.5 max then this knife won't be for you, such a shame as the blade is very strong an cuts very very well.

      @BushCampingTools  8 лет назад

      Hi thanks. I'm not sure but probably you'd need to look at the physical characteristics of each alloy at a given hardness etc and this might give some indication of a resistance to a bending moment. I'll ask an engineering friend of mine who is a mechanical engineer.

    • @mcj5644
      @mcj5644 8 лет назад

      +Bush Camping Tools So my new Mini BV arrived today and she's quite a robust little knife! Upon initial inspection, the knife had a few relatively minor flaws, e.g., (1) while definitely sharp, the edge bevels are a little uneven, a common issue that I've observed on new knives from a number of makers--no worries, I'll fix that; (2) the jimping is a bit inconsistent and sloppy in a few spots--no biggie, I can live with that; and (3) I received a "new/old stock" model that doesn't have the current array of aesthetic touches, i.e., red liners under the handle scales and the A. Corts touchmark on the blade's ricasso--I can deal with this, but I might have Cudeman send me a pair of liners. On the bright side, the knife feels terrific in my hands in a variety of grips, i.e., hammer, saber, modified saber, Filipino thumb-on-spine, reverse, etc. Incidentally, I reckon that I've discovered the purpose for that surplus jimping on the bottom of the exposed tang just below the lanyard holes...

    Hey i just recently got on but mine has the n695 steel instead of the MOVA what are the pros or cons and which is better?

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  8 лет назад

      +LethalCssPlayer I guess the N695 is going to be better as it's essentially 440C but made from Bohler of course. Cudeman like everyone will change their supply source depending on the market. MOVA they use is apparently sourced from within Spain and China but my guess is mainly China. MOVA is good, I don't have a problem with it. But at least you will know exactly who is the raw material supplier if it is N695. Maybe N695 might be a bit harder to sharpen but this is really relative to ones sharpening skills and what one is sharpening their knives with etc.
