Had the same experience a while ago! Asked a co-worker why we had a bunch of 1ft extension cords which seemed completely useless as extension cords, but he pointed this out and I've been doing it ever since.
Never saw someone talk about plastic containers in such a lyrical way 💙 I feel you bro. I love my label maker and felt exactly the same when first pondering on whether it's really worth to purchase one 🤪
I have a bin for percussion stuff, but most things are on stands and within arms reach. Cable management yes. Having a good quality headphone extender wired to the desk where I need it is important. Having a headphone cable snag under a office chair kills the vibe. Thank you for your work on Decent sampler David.
My boxes are a record of my life. So many memories of the years, like when I needed many long midi cables and rca to quarter inch. They are all in my cable box. I need to get more systematic like your boxes. I really liked this video.
I noticed when you went to your storage bins during your video about sampling your toothbrush, and I actually had to take a moment to be envious of your system; so this video is just what I need! Thanks for all the great videos and contributions to sampling!
I still don't have a lot of cables as I'm just starting, but this was helpful. It was a affordable solution of storing music cables and all other music stuff.
Interesting video, as it's always nice to take a look at someone else kitchen. I really liked the label printer as I didn't know it exists. It may sound dumb, but the cheapest and so far working diy project is to use toiler paper rolls, wrap them and fill them vertically into the shoes box, so that each cable has a dedicated slot. Apparently it can only fit short cables. For patch cables, there are plenty 3d model on thingiverse you can print out cheap and make a good use of it. I also use peppermint candy boxes for stuff like adapters.
Excellent information thank you I bought a quite a few mono bags when they were selling off cheap. Still expensive but great quality and I can fit almost everything in there and stack. From guitars, synths, drum machines to pedal boards and cables Plus you can almost guarantee that no other person will have any if I go to rehearsal/gig Almost stealth so no one is tempted to steal my gear
You may find silicon bands to be helpful for managing cables and cords. They’re a little easier to handle than the Velcro or plastic ties. There are a variety of kinds, everything from regular circle bands to a zip-tie style. Rubber ties are decent too but they tend to dry out and become brittle over time, unlike silicon.
I Keep stuff much the same way as you, but my studio is almost all kept in my living room as I live in an apartment, thus I instead opted for more old fashioned black paper boxes instead. On the same shelf that,s also part of my desk setup, I have LED lit Spaces for storing synths, pedals and various cassette recorders as Well as pre drawn extension cords to easily power it all…
"… But they all have to match. So, if I did do that I’d have to switch all my containers…" So, I’m NOT the only one! ;) Half my garage is outfitted this way with four different sized containers. I keep extras, just like you said.
Thanks for this video, it's great. I have a few of those Sterilite boxes, and the wire shelving, but no labelmaker. Might need to fix that! I use rackmount power filters for my electricity, with an APC UPS at the start of the chain, because where I live, the power goes out at least once every summer when the summer storms hit. I recently set up a regular audio patch bay and a MIDI patch bay, and my hope is it'll reduce the mess (and fire hazard) of cables all over the place, spaghetti-style.
Excellent. Thank you so much. So profoundly useful (and dazzlingly engaging) to my ADD mind. Invaluable. But I was so disappointed when the video finished. I was getting a pure dopamine tingle of utter detailed clarity - the practical solution to all my daily trials and woes. Can you do a separate channel on things like this?
Also, I recommend the Brother PTE110 label maker if you ever need to switch. It's made for electricians so has some useful extra symbols you can print from it. And it's orange.
I think you might have a heart attack if you saw my overflowing box of cables under my desk.. Live in a small NYC apartment with no closets or dedicated synth space. It can be very rough..
Hey David first of all thanks for all the great content you create for us. I watched every single of your kontakt videos now and they really helped. But something I really miss on whole RUclips is just a series all centered around the actual scripting. I‘m absolutely no programmer and so I really struggle when there is no Tutorial available. Sadly in many situations this is the case. So if you want to and of course if you have the time, could you make such a series -where we viewers may even has the opportunity to ask questions? This would be really nice. Thank you.
Really helpful to see how you organize your space. I have been doing the plastic storage boxes with label maker for some time and it works well for me. One problem I constantly have is during a project I will go to my bookshelf and pull down a book I need to use for reference. That ends up on the floor beside my desk. In a day or two, I need something else - like a Microfreak synth. That ends up on top of the book on the floor beside my desk. The next day, another book - on top of the Microfreak synth. And slowly I build a mountain of stuff that lives past the current project and into the next project cycles. Finally I will realize the mess underfoot and clean it up - but how to avoid this mountain building without losing the work flow as I move from book to project to synth?
I already bought the same chrome "bakers" racks but found that three Ikea containers with lids fit across each shelf . They have a little indent that latches on to the small lip that sticks up from the front of the shelves which also keeps them from sliding off when I pull them out to look for something. They stick out from the lip of the shelf about 2 inches. They're good for bigger objects but your Sterilite are better stacked for smaller items. Heading out to pick up a bunch. Thanks for the video
I loved the video! Right now I’m in the process of migrate from a desktop computer to a laptop, to start using my Novation Summit as a controller in front of me (so I will use it more often as soundsource), considering to build a table with rack spaces… All of it for ergonomics and workflow! And having a tidy space is crucial! Anyone is having similar issues or any tip to consider? Thanks!
I’m a label lover too. Unfortunately, cheap label makers are crap and few have a querty keyboard. It’s a little thing, but your lucky if you still have that Epson 🤪
How many unused launchpads do you have? I put all cables in one laptop bag that’s overflowing. Have all my synths in standup position stored in my closet and use laptop stands when I do a multiple synth setup. I labeled my midi cables at each end to know how it’s used in my current favorite setup. (In out or thru and synth name)
I have a bunch of Launchpads (Original, Mini, MK2, Pro, X) because I wrote a piece of Launchpad software a while back, and I had to buy all the models that were available at the time. Thankfully a bunch were available on eBay. I labeled my MIDI cables too, but then... I used them for things other than what I had labeled them for. :)
@@DavidHilowitzMusic I might have to write some code for my launchpad pro as well, to use as a controller for my octatrack. I think the same will happen with my labeled midi cables
How many is too many USB cables? I vowed to keep only 2 of each type. I'm back to a shoebox full of them in two years. Having hooks and a "home" for headsets kept me from breaking them all the time.
@@DavidHilowitzMusic there's a whole thing on the internet about mysterious songs (for example "like the wind" "for my murder" "fond my mind") and a song of yours called "Louis XIV" was one of them. The short power connector isn't anything I ever considered, but it's such an "of course!" idea that I'm glad you shared it. Thanks!

The mesh bags is a good tip, cheers.

Such a great and beautifully neat video. Very satisfying to see a fellow tidier at work in the studio.
Heck yes, this is the winning studio geek content. 👍🏻
Simple but a real life problem in most studios . Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving
This video gave me real Van Neistat vibes, and I'm here for it

If I showed my "organization" techniques, I would be laughed off the internets, I can find everything when I need it though.
This is wonderful, only one step away from Patrick Bateman however 😂 be careful!
Dymo label makers are now all DRM-protected so you can't use third-party tapes in them anymore.
Your hair and the video topic don't match 😂
