Hi all. I had the same problem with my Sebring 2010 and I can say you for sure that is NOT a rack and pinion problem! The problem is in the inner tie rod! So, don’t spend your time and money for the rack and pinion replacement, just change the inner tie rods and this problem will go away. Like my comment to let more people see the solution.
Sorry, about the trouble that you all are having with this vehicle brand. I own a 2000 year Chrysler LHS and I can tell you that I have replace all things mechanical on this car. Yes, buyers be advised they are high maintenance with a capital B. The issue that you are experiencing may be more related to the rack and pinion steering mount and front subframe. The front subframe is coupled to the main body with isolator bushings. If the bushings are bad or loose the subframe will knock around and make noises similar to suspension components. If the vehicle is new make sure that the subframe bushings and motor mounts are torqued to the required specifications. If the car is over 50,000 miles consider replacing the subframe bushings if inspections require it. On the lightside, check your rack and pinion gear box mount. That bugger will rattle and clunk if it is not bolted securely to the body frame. More so, if the rack's bushings are worn it will bang against the frame each time you hit a wayward ant on the road. The sound can and usually masks itself as a issue in the suspension but can be far form the truth. The fact is that the tie rods are the link that transmits roll shock to the pinion gear box, which if not secure, will clunk around like hot popcorn in a small cup. Goodluck to you. Also, if in case you are interested, I'm done with Chryslers and Dodge vehicles.
I have a '16 200. there is this horrible clanking rattling noise from driver side going over bumps and doesn't have to be big bumps/holes in street just even thr slightest uneven pavement causes it to be loud. I had shocks and struts, new front end work(honestly so much i don't even remember) but 4 different shops say front end is fine......WTF??!!! then throw me in a looney bin because im.hearing noises! I was told by Firestone and Chrysler that its brakes pads slipping. ok so I had the shop redo the brakes on Saturday October 10 well guess what.....yes its couple days later and same noise but louder and stronger now. #chrysler #chryslerdoesntgiveashit #dontwastemoneyonbuyingmopar
The Chrysler 200 banging sound is NOT the bearing. They changed mine too but the problem did not go away until the steering gear was replaced. I worked with a rep in the Chrysler President's office and a team of engineers in Detroit. They were very helpful. This issue is driving a lot of people crazy. Finally, after the steering gear was replaced, the problem stopped instantly.
Yes please tell what is the steering gear? Same issue here.. center left clunk. Good ball joints, wheel bearings, bushings are good. I'm think inner tie rod end
My 2013 Chrysler 200 Touring made the same noise as in this video. Dealership replaced strut mounts and bearings also the inner tie rods. The noise is gone! :)
OMG! I have a 2009 Chrysler Sebring convert. with 89000 miles. It has been a good car, except developing this same exact bumping noise. I hesitate taking it to the Chrysler dealership because of expense. I have had it on the rack twice, but both times I was told that everything looked good. The mechanic did say it could be a steering column problem. What do I do now?????
Just took my car in today still under warranty and they replaced all 4 rods. Had the same exact sound and issues with brakes when backing up! Make sure you get it in before the warranty expires, they know its an issue but won't tell you outright. Needs to be a recall! It feels like tires are going to fall off seriously!
Slomovndon Hopefully you had better success than I with resolving the problem. My 2011 Chrysler 200 had that problem. The service department at Chrysler replaced the sway bar. Shortly after the sway bar replacement, a part involving the axle broke. Since this part does not normally break, the service department could not find the part to make the repair. After waiting several weeks, I traded the unfixed 2011 for a 2013 Chrysler 200. Now the 2013 is making that same noise. I had my own mechanic look under the car. The bushings of the sway bar are rusted and the axle is showing signs of rusting. He indicated the under side of the vehicle had not been undercoated and that it appeared short cuts had been taken in the building of the car. The vehicle has depreciated to the point that I cannot get rid of it without taking a money bath. Out of all the vehicles I have purchased from Chrysler/Jeep, the 200 has been the worst investment, a total disaster.
I currently have the 2012 Chrysler 200 my issue is the tie rods. That's the shaking this guy may be experiencing in the video but mine doesn't make a sound. Found the parts less than 50 dollars online. Shops just want money for labor when the job may only take 1 hour or less to get done
I have read all your comments. Been to main dealers and various repair shops. So many different reasons given as "maybe's" but who can tell me exactly WHAT WAS IT, The video is perfect sound just as my 2013, 200 convertible with 29k miles on clock. What is the cure PLEASE
Mine is doing the same, however less frequent, I noticed it at about 118,000. It also makes the steering wheel vibrate when braking, I think it's the entire suspension and steering gear. Poor design, I'm looking for a recall.
Inner tie-rod, my 04 300M was having the same problem until the bushing wore out and fell off, now there's play in the wheel - get it fixed while it's under warranty!
Veronica, I sent my customer service manager the link to all 5 video clips, and after reviewing it, I brought my car back in. They had the car for 3 days, and of course were not able to duplicate the noise. However, the customer service manager said: "since we can't duplicate the noise, we can't fix it". So much for the Chrysler side of it. But now I'm counting on all our other RUclips friends to help us out. If some knows, please comment on this clip. Thanks!
Took my 2013 Chrysler 200 in today, my car has less than 39000 miles. Dealership said I need to replace the tie rod ends and rack and pinion is worn and has a lot of play. They said it wasn't covered under warranty, so I'm looking at over $500 In repairs.
I have a 2011 chysler 200 and had the same noise came up on 56,000KM and I took it to the dealer ship too many times and they couldn't detect the issue, after all I had the two front shocks replaced and the noise was gone for almost a year... Now the noise came up again and the car has been driven for 88,000 KM and I'm sure the shocks are perfect.... It drives me crazy and I couldn't find where is the issue
My wife's 2012 just startyed this noise as well at around 25,000 miles. Other than this, it has been a great car. More than I can say for my 2012 300 SRT8 which has spent about as much time in the shop as it has my driveway
My 2013 200 with 64k just started making the exact same noise...which only occurs after the car warms up. Took it to a few shops....none of which could duplicate the noise. Although they all suggested something in the steering could be the culprit.
i to have this problem with my 2011 chrysler 200.this may sound odd or a fluke. i adjusted the steering column swivle up to the highest point and has made a difference. not saying it completly did away with issue but occurs less. i also think some how the ac unit adds to problem. when using ac alot it happens..like i said its not a complete fix but anything to stop the irritating sound and feel from clunk and rattle..
Omgosh, I have a 2013 Chrysler 200 with 60,000 miles and it just started doing this same exact thing after driving it like 20+ miles!!! It's been driving me crazy cause I can't figure it out and I take long trips from NY to VA and I don't want the front end to just break on me while driving. I thought it was the breaks because the padding was all gone, but I had them replaced and it's still doing it. Help! Is it safe to drive? I'm reading so many things year of different stuff it could be like tirods, bushings, stearing gear? What is it, what is this problem? Does anyone know for sure?
Mine is doing the same. I've taken it in to the shop a few times my mechanic says it's a waist of $ to replace anything that this is a typical chrysler issue . Totally unacceptable 🤔😕
@@Ayman10544 yep, I got a lemon lawyer and he took care of it for me. Chrysler wouldn't take it back but they basically paid the car off in the form of a financial settlement
My car is doing the exact same thing. Just at 19k in miles and its a 2012. This video describes it to perfection. So what did the dealership say after you showed then the video?
Same thing happened to my Chrysler 200 2013 at about 37,000 miles. The dealer said it's the tie rod ends and is replacing them. Hoping that resolves the problem.
I noticed in the comments section for this video that most of the complaints are from people whose cars are fairly new with very low mileage. Dodge clearly has very shady engineering and build quality practices when it comes to their vehicles. Transmission and suspension flaws seem to be a constant issue with this automaker and if the vehicle is not under warranty then it's a wrap. Dodge/Chrysler should have been buried years ago.
DeCarlos Williams the problem is they like to use cheap parts make lots of money but make crap, even the valve cover is plastic, you should see where the starter is at... lol
Just had my 2013 Chrysler 200 popping noise located by Chrysler dealer. They say it's the rack and pinion. $1,000+ to replace it. They say they will guarantee that will solve the popping problem. I can test drive it before I pay. Then, if the noise returns after I take it home, they'll refund my money. Either way, they will leave the new parts on my car. I think I'll try it. If anyone has tried this solution and it does NOT work, please post your answer ASAP. Thanks. I have about a week before the part comes in.
I have a 2012 Chrysler 200 Limited. I got Chrysler in Detroit involved in this issue of loud banging in left front end. Sounded like the bottom was falling out. Turns out it is a steering gear. Once replaced the car has been fine. It has also needed a new hood due to rusting, an ABS unit and a water pump. Very sad. Does anyone at Chrysler focus on quality control? If so, they must be asleep.
its impossible for the hood of a chrysler 200 to rust. they are made from aluminum, if your car has a rusty hood, its probably been in a accident, and the body shop has used a cheap aftermarket hood, dodge is not at fault as far as your hood goes
I took my car in today with the same noise to one of the dealerships here in Dallas. They said control arm link and that they would also replace the bushings. I did drive it around until I could duplicate the noise. I didn't even have to get on the street it was so loud and obvious. Just circled around the garage. They had me park the car and then pushed heavily on one side and when it rocked they could make the noise. Hoping this works.
No. That did not fix it. The noise only starts after the car has been driven for a while or it is very hot outside. To be honest, that Chrysler dealership, did not even test drive it because it was making the noise moments after leaving. About a month later the noise got worse and then one day got louder than ever and then stopped for the most part. The weather changed and it has been cooler and the new dealership service director suggested that if the noise returns when the weather warms up that the inner-workings of the steering column actually need more lubrication. But, I have to duplicate the noise before they will do anything.
kytaric Thanks for the update. Could you please keep us posted of any changes since I'm also having the same problem and I want to fix it myself since these dealerships are useless around my city and besides I'm out of warranty.
Did you ever fix the issue? I'm nearing up on 75,000 miles on my 2012 Chrysler 200 and I got the same issue, do you feel it in the steering wheel as well?
Lower contorl arm or strush or your bushin to lower control arm , the ball joint is no good control arm comes with the ball joint. Javier R. Thanks Javier
Well, we are way more than 4 people. Mine started at 200 miles, now car has 10K. No explanation or fix. I enjoy the car otherwise, but between the torque steer, and the loose feeling when driving, it has me cautious. Since no one has a fix, that is making me think I should off-load this car asap.
David, tell to the dealer to change the bearing, it works, despite they fix it my 200 V6 started to make a horrible engine noise when starts, ASAP the fix it I will unfortunately sell the car
Try the hood prop, peck at it and see if it bounces like mine did and made such a noise. Also could be loose engine shields or front bumper loose. Good luck, I know why they call them CRYslers now. They must think it's funny to make cars that make people cry. There went my life. Give me my Chevy back ! The anvils from heaven have fallen on my head.
Yea, thats what it is. Its happens couse factory does not put much lube in them. I recomend you to remoove the rubber cover on joint and spray it with wd40, then put some lube in rubber cover and put it back on joint.
I am pretty sure that I know what it is. I suffer this damn noise for almost a a year the dealership change everything. Shockers suspension but the real problem is the bearing. Try to change it.
Update: Both left and right strut have been changed. Both control arms too. This is NOT a support bearing; they have been changed. As has the steering shaft. Then engine mounts re-torqued. Top of strut bearing has been lubricated. This is an issue you can feel and hear; surprisingly, noise does NOT happen on a road with a convex surface; only on flat surfaces. 4-wheel alignment has been done twice. Problem still remains. Two plus weeks before a Chrysler tech can come out to check it!
Why ya think they stop making the chrysler 200? And every car manufacturer has one shitty model but people like ta bash FCA for all there vehicles. So I take it the challenger hellcat is shit too.
You just got one and can't wait to get another? hahaha I guess you like having a car that's always in the shop and paying for the same problems over and over.

That's a easy DIY job... You tripping
Outer tie rod end.
Or sway bar end links.
Id check all ball joints.
Bushings can also be worn on control arms or sway bar

Now we are 4, my 200 V6 now has a transmission problem. I'm very disappointed
Two plus weeks before a Chrysler tech can come out to check it!
were you able to fix it david?
David Wood tie rod
Stabilizer?
On mine it was some of that plastoc shit under the car...
Bad sway bar bushings

Why ya think they stop making the chrysler 200? And every car manufacturer has one shitty model but people like ta bash FCA for all there vehicles. So I take it the challenger hellcat is shit too.
They did not stop making the 200.
Wheel bearings
or strut mounts
Never buy a Chrysler
You will never see me own a chrysler, ford, dodge, and most likely not other american cars either. Only toyota or Subaru, i like subaru's more.
You just got one and can't wait to get another? hahaha I guess you like having a car that's always in the shop and paying for the same problems over and over.
Carlos Pereira Ford is UK

Addendum.. Bearings/bushing, struts, and sway bar were all fine....
motor mounts bub
Chrysler 200 and 300 both of them garbage them place in junkyard.
Thanks!
does it not happen all the time? mine is constant? maybe take them for a rough drive with you? How did this resolve its self? I see this post was 3 years ago....
