@@gundamzerostrike Compared to the myriad of great racing games on the Playstation the N64 was very lack lustre. World Driver Championship is argued the best game but compared to Gran Turismo it wasn't even close, Collin McRae Rally, V Rally, the TOCA Touring Car series and many more, the N64 had nothing to compare I'm afraid. F Zero 64 was good, I had many great races with my friends and today still they are some of my greatest gaming memories but that was the exception rather than the rule. Let's not even get started on how it looked graphically though... The Playstation just did racing games better.
This is one of those games that I absolutely love that I feel like nobody else has ever heard of. I disagree with your comment that this game isn't as good as the Cruis'n series. The Cruis'n games play faster but the controls in this game are way better and it provides much more of a replay value with all the secrets, especially when you're trying to collect the bonus boxes.
i remember renting this game from blockbuster (RIP) and love playing it with my sisters and brothers and in recent years, i found a copy at a thrift shop. you can always find N64 games at those and it's still fun.
Speaking of cars. Moved to a new neighborhood yesterday. Next door neighborhood has the same color El Camino as Mark who I immediately thought of when I saw it. c: Also, this game's visuals are pretty impressive.
One of the best games on the N64, every track was awesome and it was so much fun finding all the short cuts and hidden crates. 4 player split screen was absolutely brilliant too
My childhood...I loved this game, spent many hrs almost breaking my n64 in waves of joy or frustration, but after unlocking the best vehicles...man does it pay off.Wish I still had my n64. Good times...
Played this game when I was little and remember it fondly! My cousin had it, so when I visited we played the battle mode a lot :) You simply collected beetle icons and had to get a certain amount of them before the other player did! This mode had special maps/tracks and were a lot of fun! 10/10!
I remember buying this game when it was brand new. I unlocked the secret cars you speak of, and some cheats were available from the Game Shark. Thanks for posting this review, it's brought back many memories. I especially miss the Beetle Battle. :)
I loved this game back in the day. PRO-TIP: once you unlock the police car the horn becomes a siren and other racers will pull over when you approach them....sooo good.
I played this game almost exclusively when I was 7-8 years old. If you hold the Z button, let go of the gas, and then turn with a car with high handling, you will make the turn with little to no speed loss while turning impossibly fast. Just a little tip for those of you who may think about playing this game (which you ABSOLUTELY MUST!) Still one of my favorite racing games.
Funny you should mention the El Camino... Australia actually got a version of this game with Holden Commodores instead of New Beetles. The coupe utility (El Camino type) version of the car (which is probably what Holden is best known for outside of its homeland) wasn't playable, just the sedans, but still... funy coincidence.
If you want to play this game but don´t happen to like the Beetle you should get the Australian Exclusive HSV Adventure Racing. It´s the same game, but with a different car!
***** Your Point is what? Of Course it´s hard to find outside of Australia / New Zealand because it was an exclusive for those countries alone, same goes for the PAL release of Starcraft 64 (only Australia), so production runs for these games where short and copies limited. And people talking on YT has little to do with prices going up for rare games, Just type "Beetle Adventure Racing" into google and go to pictures, a Packshot of the HSV Version is on Page 1, the Wikipedia entry for BAR talks about the HSV version even before you get to the contents table. It isn´t very hard to find out about it wihout knowing it is a thing. The price going up has to do with limited copies and people wanting to get full PAL sets wich means they have to get games that where exclusive to Australia as well.
I rented this game as a kiddo. I don't know why, I don't particularly like racing games, Beetles, or cars, but maybe I read in a magazine about it and got curious, but it's definitely not a bad game.
This game seems to have a pretty small active image for the output, its always got a black border on all sides on my PVM. Was it always bordered like that on regular CRT's back in the day? Playing the NTSC version.
Heh. I remember when my eldest brother came home on leave with his friend in an old white Beetle (this was around 1973, when he had been shipped to Ft. Bragg after his second ToD in Vietnam). Then he ended up leaving it for several months in our driveway because he couldn't get it started back up :). I think he eventually sold it (since that was 41-42 years ago, my mind is a little hazy on the conclusion; I was 11 then).
I have this game. It was fun, especially the multiplayer. my brother hit me with four effects at once: Funkadelic, fliptop, fisheye, and fog. somehow I still managed to win.
From what I can see, it looks like an old Gamecube game. Very impressive for the N64. Not sure what it really looks like on the big screen, but sure looks good.
My old preschool teacher used to bring this game every Friday and i was a boss at it. I'm pretty sure there's a secret rainbow car if I remember correctly. It was the best in the game
3 games i was a beast back in the 90s when the n64 came out Golden Eye I dominated every kid in a five block radius, as well as in 007 the world is not enough, and this Beetle Adventure Racing especially in its battle mode
Loved this game played it to death, hidden routes, points and nitro boxes to smash, finally getting the Alien beetle car. brill, one of the hidden gems on the N64, that is if you like a decent racing game
Porsche licensed a PS1 game called Porsche Challenge when the Boxster first came out. I don't remember it being too bad either, but hindsight is telling me that Volkswagen Auto Group (which includes Porsche) decided video games were good advertising.
Great game, I really whish I had a N64 to play this game, and other ones as well. My next purchase will be a N64, and I plan to modify it to suport RGB SCART, so I can get the best possible picture quality out of it. Love your show Mark, hugs from Brazil!
Yeah, I kind of do that already, but you know, I'm one of those persons that really enjoys having the fisical console, the original controller in the hands and that kind of stuff. But yeah, emulation gives a way better picture quality, and nowadays N64 emulators work perfect.
I actually have this game, it's not that bad at all. This is obviously better out there but this one actually feels like they had people working on it so they can show their talent so they could be hired to a different studio or be given an actual chance to make a real game.
If you haven't played this before you really need to - one of the coolest racers around
***** Crusing USa craps on this game
Keepskatin Cruising USA is crap compared to this game.
Once again, Glenplant, I find you on CGR.
***** Give us your opinion, Glenn! This or Cruising USA? You have to pick one!
Personally, I would pick this any time. I love this game.
***** Agreed, solid game!
this game was the best game that EA made for that generation. It deserves more love, best racer on N64
World Driver Championship is not even close to a gran turismo 2 for an example, but I think is the best racing game on N64
DJackson747 Agreed, best 5 euro impulse buy I've ever made.
I do like NFS 3 Hot Pursuit more though, in my opinion that's the best game EA ever made.
It is my favorite game on the system
DJackson747
'Best racer on the n64', that's not really saying much is it, the n64 just didn't do racing games very well at all did it.

The operatic "Hot lavaaaa!" is interrupted and ended with a cough. I freaking love that. This is one of my favorite games.
This game had some of the BEST music I ever heard in a videogame.
This is one of those games that I absolutely love that I feel like nobody else has ever heard of.

That track with the dinosaur used to scare the out of me as a little kid 😂
This game looks pretty good for a N64 game!
Why does that game in wrong system gag never get old :P
This was one of my favorite racing game of all time when I was 6

I used to have this years ago when I had an N64, good times... thanks for reviewing Lord Karnage.
The track designs in this game are amazing.
Woah! The driver commited suicide for arriving 4th place. Now that's hardcore.
the beetle was my favourite car when I was a kid so I would've loved this game
Flamethrow El Camino game.... Interstate 76!!! I'm sure there is an El Camino car, or type of car in that.
Freaking-mega Late response but that is from Vigilante 8: Second Offense, I believe.
Great game! I STILL bring this game up a few times a year when the subject of underrated games comes up especially on N64.
Awesome game with all the shortcuts ,and alien beetle rocks
Love that "get out my FAAACE" horn. :p
gr8fzy1 It's actually "We came in peace"
MindlessSelfAndee
I prefer get out my face...makes him seem like
more like an earthling. you know...trying to blend in with the locals?
gr8fzy1
oh ok then
One of the best most overlooked N64 games!

My friend and I played deathmatch in this game all the time back in the late 90s. San Francisco Rush 1 and 2 were also awesome N64 racing games.
The draw distances are really insane on this game, and so is the music. The best N64 racing game.
***** There is an Australian variant called HSV adventure racing
I loved this game as a kid. The multiplayer on it was fun also.
this game is amazing with the n64 steering wheel works real good and is super fun.
I remember learning about this gem from Retronauts. It's one of those rare games that's both fun and still inexpensive.
Oh god I remember playing this game back when I was a kid with my mom. Geez she was really competitive but it was still a ton of fun!
Woooow I remember that from my childhood, I really loved this!
I still have it, actually!
I picked this game up a few months ago. I love it.
Bro till this day this game is one of my favorites
Lotus Turbo Challenge on the Mega Drive was luscious.
It was, more or less, Taito Chase HQ, but with all the Lotus turbo branded goodness.
Beetle Battle Mode was awesome. Worth checking out. I love this game.
Good memories playing this game with my siblings
Got this Game!
Yes! Thankyou, Mark!
Thanks for posting this. It reminded me of those Love Bug movies.
I loved this game back in the day. PRO-TIP: once you unlock the police car the horn becomes a siren and other racers will pull over when you approach them....sooo good.
The track designs looked fun and expansive.

Still one of my favorite racing games.
One of the MANY great racing games on the N64.
Loved this game as a kid

Best racing game on the N64.
i used to love this game!
I love this game. I played it a couple of days ago actually.
this game wipes its ass with the whole crusin' series, especially crusin usa!
No, no, no-- you NEED to play Beetle Battle... You can't properly review this game without playing Beetle Battle!
I rented once or twice as a kid, I loved it.
love it mark
If you want to play this game but don´t happen to like the Beetle you should get the Australian Exclusive HSV Adventure Racing. It´s the same game, but with a different car!
I used to have it! It was based on the Holden Commodore VT (1997-2000) road car, and the Holden Racing Team livery from 1998.
***** Your Point is what?

Best 64 game ever! Now I gotta go dig all that stuff out and fire up a few races.
I rented this game as a kiddo. I don't know why, I don't particularly like racing games, Beetles, or cars, but maybe I read in a magazine about it and got curious, but it's definitely not a bad game.
I always loved the N64 Foggy draw distance.
Love this game.
Some of the best nostalgia I have is when I had my n64, almost feel sad for some reason
This game seems to have a pretty small active image for the output, its always got a black border on all sides on my PVM. Was it always bordered like that on regular CRT's back in the day? Playing the NTSC version.
Fun fact: This was originally going to bee Need for Speed 64.

"4th place!" *SPLASH*
Brilliant :-D
I have this game. It was fun, especially the multiplayer. my brother hit me with four effects at once: Funkadelic, fliptop, fisheye, and fog. somehow I still managed to win.
"This one's not too expensive to collect"
Yup, mine is a loose cart that cost about $4 and has Blockbuster sticker residue on it.
I remember seeing cosmo speedrunning this game.
Beetle Adventure Racing HD when?
From what I can see, it looks like an old Gamecube game. Very impressive for the N64. Not sure what it really looks like on the big screen, but sure looks good.

Mega FIare Studios The Alien Beetle. Second best in the game.

I remember there being a police Beetle that made cars pull over every time you put the siren on.
driving style is like Re-Volt. - There's a game you need to review. It was available on a few platforms including PS(1) and PC
Do you send the games back to the people who gave them to you, or do you keep them? Just curious!
Still waiting for his Driveclub review...
Should we start a kickstarter for "Flamethrower equipped El Camino madness racing"?
Yes! I planned to send you this, but I guess I was beaten to it!
One of the best on N64.
I saw this cheap today and figured I should check a quick review.
Well, this looks incredible! Insta buy!
Its all bout vigilante 8 ...now thats a game !
Porsche licensed a PS1 game called Porsche Challenge when the Boxster first came out. I don't remember it being too bad either, but hindsight is telling me that Volkswagen Auto Group (which includes Porsche) decided video games were good advertising.
and later NFS Porsche Unleashed both for PS1 and PC (which is the best version)

Greetings from Wolfsburg, home of the Volkswagen Company
MrDan981 oh and i´ll tell them that lava resistence is nowadays very important
holy shit i had this game when i had my n64. oh the nostalgia
Does anybody know if you can unlock the classic beetle? Or is it literally just new beetles?
excellent game, well worth owning a 64 just for this.
I actually have this game, it's not that bad at all. This is obviously better out there but this one actually feels like they had people working on it so they can show their talent so they could be hired to a different studio or be given an actual chance to make a real game.
Hey you should review the driver series especially driver 2 the wheelman is back
it's beetle adventure racing
0:41 my father has a hyaundai sonata XD
Flamethrower elco racing madness a go go!
If a car ain't lava proof, it ain't worth buy'n.
I'd get a VW Beetle but it's a CHICK car! How did it become a CHICK CAR??
It's also a top choice for murders and rapists.. so.. probably better just to call it a girls car

Ted Bundy!
