I met him in Bangkok at a John McLaughlin concert. He is exactly as you might imagine him. He said something great, too. I complimented him on having mastered so many different styles and techniques and said something like, "You must have put in an incredible amount of work." He said, "Well, if it had felt like work, I wouldn't have done it."

  • @SpaceCattttt

Guthrie is the perfect example of a virtuoso who plays with tremendous feel. Even when he shows off, it's both mind-blowing and emotionally resonant.
I can't think of any other guitar player who can literally do it all, seemingly without effort. He's unbelievable.

+Adrian Lee Much as I like Steve Vai's work with Zappa, to me, he's a machine. I've never heard him play anything that moved me on a deeper level.
Even when he played the blues in Crossroads, it felt very forced. He's just a sci-fi guitarist with a knack for playing very difficult music, whereas
Guthrie can play whatever he likes and make it sound authentic. Guthrie isn't bound down by any particular style.

Then I heard him play a slower Blues, basic I-IV-V and it was extremely emotional.
Then I listened to more of his shredding and heard all of the emotion he was putting into it as well.

My thoughts in relation to Mr Govan, is that he is so good, he can play whatever he wants to, (as opposed to most of us, who are limited to what the guitar and our [relatively] limited technique will ALLOW us to play. He is the only guitarist I have ever seen who can play the same musical phrase with different techniques, just for the sake of getting a different tone. Astonishing.

Another excellent video. Nails the smooth rounded Larry Carlton vibe with modern shred chops. Speaking of Larry Carlton the solos he cut for Steely Dan's Kid Charlemagne are THE example of perfectly composed solos in the jazz fusion idiom more associated with improvisation. Unfortunately I haven't seen clips of him performing it live with Steely Dan but there's this (from about 1:35) ruclips.net/video/yMArrSjSjOo/видео.html

Absolutely can't get enough of the Arristacrats, if not for Marco Minnamin and Brian Beller, who or where would Guthrie really fit in? The guy is just to good. I saw an old clip Guthrie had to have just come on the scene. He's on stage with Steve V , and it really looks to me like Steve got his ego hurt that day. It was the greatest thing I've ever seen. Fil Yer the Man🤘
    * ROCK*

Guthrie is a master of all styles, period. He sits alone in that rarified atmosphere of not the top shelf where many great musicians reside, but that shelf built just for him.
He's also an incredibly intelligent individual with a very high IQ, which is obvious when you begin to understand his theoretical nous. This Man could excel in any vocation if he so chose; though perhaps not hairdressing, bodybuilding or MMA ...(he is Human after all)
He also has a genetic advantage between his brain processing ability and his physical hand/fingers mechanics. Add all that to the hours of patient, constructive, logical practising techniques and you end up with a freak of nature called Guthrie Govan.

Prog rockers ROCK. I mentioned G3 on another post. Govan did a G3 concert. You ought to see Satriani react to this guy! Lol!

Guthrie might just be, historically speaking, "peak electric guitar". All instruments move in and out of fashion, there was probably a "peak lute player" somewhere in the 18th century. Players of the future will use techniques and instruments we cannot imagine yet. For classic electric guitar with 6 strings, this might be it.

Awesome! Guthrie is the man!! What do you think of Tim Reynolds? Dave Matthews lead guitarist, I think he's a mad man, crazy good player, but sooooo under rated!!!

I've never heard him before. Great player. It is odd. It is like modern techniques added to 1970's jazz rock. Muzak meets Ozzy.

Funny reading people guthrie can't play like him or him. I think he is the most well rounded players with so many styles he can effortlessly fit into any solo improvised with the greatest of ease. People say batio is the fastest guitarist going but to me is pretty onw dimensional but credit he can play freakishly fast
