So crazy I never noticed that. Just makes that scene even more epic. I saw Rogue One opening weekend. The entire theater gasped when Vader showed up and ignited his lightsaber. I heard someone say “Uh oh, shit’s about to get real!” Some even started clapping after the scene ended and Vader stood on the ramp thing, while that epic music played.
Vader wanted to hear the rebels shit their collective pants as they hear heavy ass boot steps coming from the dark that keeps getting darker.... Vader uses fear against his opponents and this just highlights that point

Imagine now that vader was trying to get his target alone long enough for an ambush, and had his life support off like in Empire, but his target winds up not only not being alone, but after a while leaves the room with someone else, so vader ambush plan backfired upon vader, causing him silent humiliation!
Darth Vader actually has taken off his helmet and turned off his life support system countless times. in canon btw. He can survive up to 2 days without his helmet on, but it completely exhausts him. He can survive only 40 minutes with his life support off.
Theater started cheering when we heard that breathing and everyone went fucking crazy when he was tearing thru all those rebels. Super sick experience seeing this movie
the reason is actually just because the lights on his chest plate don’t light up in a new hope, they did their best in rogue one to create a faithful version of his first suit with really small details like his robes being over his pauldrons and his lenses being red
