"Takes clear inspiration from Hollow Knight" this game was in development and looking like this YEARS before Hollow Knight came out!
I'm getting more Metroid Vibes.
This!!
Yeah but that doesn't mean it can't takes inspiration from hollow knight
@@brazejan1 Well since time is linear, and since this art style (and huge portions of the game world and assets) was settled on years before Hollow Knight, it kind of does mean that.
It doesn't even really look like Hollow Knight
Loving this game so far, the soundtrack is especially noteworthy though, absolutely gorgeous
A new metroidvania with bosses that won't make me want to rip my hair out? Sign me up! I already have tons of games that I dread replaying due to the difficulty (ironically, I don't count Dread in that list)
I stopped playing Hollow Knight partly because of that. I made it to the Mantis City bit, but I couldn't figure out how to progress and I backtracked. I apparently missed some stuff in the Mantis City and need to get back there, but I kept dying so much because of the platforming coupled with damage on contact from enemies that I got frustrated and stopped having fun.
YES! Glad to read I’m not the only one.
The bosses in this game are WAY worse... imagine Hollow Knight bosses, but less creative and with 100.000 points of healt (while you do 40 damage per shot).
@@vermilion7777
Figure out their elemental weaknesses and crits. If you're using the wrong attacks, modules etc. you'll essentially shoot them with blankets for like 45mins.
@@VAVORiAL Oh, yay... stone, cissors, paper.... my favorite mechanic.... that was sarcastic...
Started this lastnight and its a treat. I don't have time to be slogging through enemies but i do want to feel like i earned the next story beat, and i get that with this. Its beautiful to watch and the soundtrack is stunning.
This is why I love gamepass games like this that come out all the time on it plus some big AAA games I'm so hooked on this game it's so much fun loving the upgrades .
I like that the setting really looks like an alien planet and not just earth with blue trees and a red sky. And not being as hard as Hollow knight can be a good thing for people like me ^^
It's bad game design makes it way worse than Hollow Knight.
@@vermilion7777yeah and your a bad human design that the only way you got on this earth is via a broken condom
Im find This game harder dan HK
Hope the developers see how much we love this game that they give us back some love with some DLC
Developer singular. One guy did this over the course of seven or so years and was forced to start from scratch in a new engine to top it off.
@@JokeDindonChannel - Ghost Song isn't just a video game... it's actually a philosophical work of artwork. Throughout various interactions with NPCs one is presented with deep concepts of life and death, and what constitutes the very meaning of Life. An as others have acknowledged, the game' s excellent Lo-fi soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful to boot!!! Ghost Song 2 NEEDS to happen!!!
I backed this game in 2012/13 on Kickstarter. Lost hope years ago that it would come out. It was only 1 guy making it, I'm glad it finally came out but I no longer have my old log in info for Kickstarter so I don't even think I'd be able to get my copy. I love gaming, but I always said it's a shit hobby due to how often it takes for the gems you're most interested in to come out. Maybe that's just me but I'm really picky!
Wait one guy? This games amazing even if it wasn’t finished with one person and better with a team but this is impressive if wat ur saying is true. I’m stuck where to go but either way it’s a fun game and great soundtrack. I’m surprised this game isn’t as big as other indie titles
I've been playing this all night...I absolutely love this game. I'm playing on gamepass but will buy it for my switch. I hope they make a physical version so I can buy that as well.
Such a surprise, I was not expecting to feel the way that I feel when playing this game, it's not just an actionfest, its kind of like if you took the metroid formula and combined it with the melancholy and pace of dark souls, including the mystery of a well put together narrative and world. This was a game that I was drawn in by the art and pleasantly surprised by the draw of other aspects of the story and world.
Had this on my wishlist for a while, gonna get it AND Somerville soon!
Played the shit out of it, when it came out. Wonderful game, with somber atmosphere, great sf art style and stellar gameplay, just listened to soundtrack of it, and it brought me back this feeling of unknown
Listen, Hollow Knight is one of my favorite games out there. But I busted my ASS finishing that game. The pride was immense, but GOD was it fucking hard sometimes.
This game has been such a delight - an extraordinary change of pace. I love the characters so much more than I expected too. Really a treat ❤️
This is what I was looking for. A positive review of Ghost Song, that acknowledges Hollow Knight as a Path of Pain. I take pride in my playthrough, but my controller (and broken will) could use a break.
I wanted to like Ghost Song more than I did, but the constant trekking back and forth upon dying between brutally spaced out fast travel/save points eventually wore me down to the point I just couldn’t be bothered after a while. Especially after getting the first ship part and forcibly having to run it all the way back, only for those once inactive piles of robot heads that I initially thought were just part of the environment to suddenly arise and harass me the entire way back. At that point, I just uninstalled. Tired of bullshit like that suddenly happening in games for the sake of artificial difficulty as a norm like the way back to the ship was right down the bloody street.
Just downed it on the game pass I'm so exited to play it regardless of what the review will rate it, I'm crossing my fingers its good. Hitting play now!
Its great
It's funny to hear him say it takes clear inspiration from Hollow knight when it's more likely the other way around. It's a kickstarter from 10 years ago.
Except that it came out after hollow knight
Honestly this just portraits how much metroidvanias have grown as a genre in that time frame. 10 years ago this would have probably caught people's attention and been a minor hit at leasy. Now I look at the trailer and I doubt it can compete by Ori, Hollow Knight, Metroid Revival, Bloodstained, Blasphemous...
@@Pereza0 Hollow Knight is overrated though imo
@@jamesbrackin6343 it is but the point is that it came first and even worst this title came out when metriodvanias are really over done
@@melancholyman369 this games Kickstarter was 10 years ago and ots just coming out now
Ghostsong isnt a bad game, they did good job mixing metroid and soulslike elements (I would say that this game genre is more soulsvania than metroidvania), although nothing is new.
There's some fun moments, but there's some issues.
* level design is kinda of meh.
* a lot of empty screens.
* lack of enemies diversity.
* Since enemies drop items, game needs a enemy menu.
* obrigatory backtracking (metroidvanias are suppposed to have free backtracking).
Its a ok game, Im not in loving, but its fine to spend some time with it.
C'mon...I just finished the game, I hate to say it, since this was 1 person project, but this game is far away from being good.
new problems I founded:
* AI behavior
* there's no final area, game ends suddenly
* game is very easy
* game is very short
The game feels like a incomplete one.
Can't deny it's quite a disappointment after I started following it from inception. But it is still an alright game. But I think it's close to not being with all its flaws.
I wish he hadn't deleted all the videos of the original build. I'd love to go back and look at that.
Is there an easy mode?
Yes
This brief review sold me on this game!
Im glad that the boss fights are easy. Life is difficult enough
looks great, will buy now!
I don't play indie games that much but with Game Pass it's a no brainer to try. But this game is special, honestly had a lot of fun with it. Not finished yet of course
It's also bundled with Humble monthly
Reminds me of 1986 Xain'd Sleena
what about switch performance? any news you aware of?
Actually a bit interested in this one. I don't mind that it's shorter or that it's easier than some other metroidvanias. I like Hollow Knight well enough, but I hit a wall with the Mantis City and the whole Fungal Wastes section can absolutely piss off. I'm no stranger to tough games, but I guess Hollow Knight just hasn't clicked for me yet.
I hate that I'm so hung up on the fact that the sprite flip for the arm cannon was not addressed. It makes it even worse when the gun is glowing red. Super Metroid fixed this 30 years ago. If you're going to do an "arm cannon" game - make sure you're willing to do it right.
My memory might not be clear but im pretty sure this game has been in development since before hollow knight.
Metroid vibes:)
This game was an enjoyable experience. It's like a mix of Metroid and Ori.
Pros:
Mesmerizing music/soundtrack
Interesting characters with backstories
Beautiful backgrounds and lighting effects
Cons:
Wall jumping at first felt off until you get the double jumping upgrade and get used to it.
The ending was underwhelming. I think they could have had some sort of a better resolution given the time we spent getting to know the crew than just saying Goodbye Blue.....( it felt abrupt )
There is a lot of backtracking but I think it adds to the sense of mystery and exploration however there were times when I felt stuck and it was frustrating.
My experience overall was calming/frustrating/beautiful/challenging.:)
I think everyone should at least play this game once because it has its moments.
thanks for the ending spoiler
I just beated the game on Switch and was a sad experience. Maybe the creator tried to make something like Metroid mixed with a Souls mechanics but the results became less than ordinary for me. Poor controls, failing all the time your comands, unnecessary far distances between the saving point and boss areas, making the game experience a pain in the a**... The only thing good for me was the game visuals, very very good, but with a lack of variety. I only beated the game because here in Brazil the games are very expensive, and I wanna to make justice with my money spent. Just for the record, this is not a complain of an unexperience gamer who have had trouble with bosses and unleashed bad comments to relieve their frustations. Believe me guys, I got platinum on Sekiro, Elden Ring, Returnal and another games considered hard games, and Ghost Song for me, isn´t a hard game, is a bad game... 😞
Did this review not come out a week ago?
The true spiritual sucessor of Super Metroid. The only one i know.
I'm sorry, but the only thing I hear is "[...] KNIVES, KNIVES, KNIVES, KNIVES, KNIVES [...]"
Great review still
I’m downloading this asap!!!!
metroidvania all I needed to hear
On the one hand it looks kind of interesting, and there's nothing wrong with a title that reminds me of Metroid alloyed with Hollow Knight. But on the other hand, I already own Hollow Knight.
The vibe I'm getting from this is Knytt, with shooting.
I dont know why but it reminds me a bit of Alien Soldier :)
thank you for the video
Man with the last few 3 minute reviews i was getting worried that Escapists wasnt gonna get another good one
Holy crap this finally came out?
Gone from gamepass but not forgotten
Ghost Song succeeds on EVERY LEVEL! I've played waaaay worse than this, but paid more for doing it... Give the devs a big time break, a huge budget and team, and let's have us some GHOST SONG 2!
Art's a little janky, but that's by far the least important part of Metroidvania games. It has the right mood and feels nice in the hand, and having a decent story to find is a big bonus.
As good as Moonscars?
If you’re thinking of playing this game, I just finished it minutes ago. Here are my thoughts:
- Controlling Deadsuit is clunky and rigid. It eventually is improved by abilities, but only improved.
- The map needs detailing, it was the least useful map of any game I’ve played. Only vaguely helped.
- The side quests aren’t clear, without looking for help on the main quest, I wouldn’t have known a majority of additional experiences were available unless dialogue exposition was blatant.
- No puzzle rooms to solve, except trying to understand cryptic dialogue.
- Some random bosses and story triggers are bugged, very tough to know when to do what or why something isn’t happening on a path the game sent you on.
- Bosses and enemies are easily cheesed. Cornered easily. Or stand on a ledge and attack without risk of damage.
- Be prepared to read a lot of useless dialog to get to genuine content and world building. By the end I was skipping dialog entirely - very unlike me.
- Not a lot of the game is clearly defined. Level ups. Suit and blaster modules. I still have no idea what “luck” does and as far as I can tell, no one else does. Odd when buying a luck point is by far the most expensive transaction in the game?
- Be prepared to grind and farm a lot. Most items cannot be purchased by casual play through.
- Anticlimactic. When it was over, I thought “that’s it?”
- At first bosses and even run of the mill enemies feel unfair, until significant level ups. By the end, with abilities, level ups and replenishment, the last 3 bosses I was never at risk of dying. It went from feeling unfair to wondering if I fought just a mini boss, very quickly.
- Not much, if any, replay value.
- Be prepared to move through multiple empty rooms and back track a lot. Backtracking often felt like backtracking for the sake of extending play time. Like removing Fast Travel when it would be the most valuable without any story or logical reason other than the game wanting you to take the long way.
The soundtrack mixed with isolating environment was a pure joy. And make no mistake, this is Metroidvania to the core. Which I absolutely love and almost exclusively play. It’s just a bummer, for being in development for 10 years, it seems like a very few amount of little tweaks would change it from mid to masterpiece. Excited to see the Devs next project. 7 out of 10.
Yet another idiotic Millennial/Gen Z kid using the same idiotic slang all of you use. Useless dialogue... did you mean your comment?
Reminds me of an old skool Nintendo game Metroid
Playing this through Humble Games. This is an easy 5-star game that the devs constantly cripple with poor design choices. The fast travel system is maligned for a reason: it barely exists. Worse, it gets DISABLED if you are carrying vital quest items, which means you need to travel back across the ENTIRE map, there seems to be no reminder that you are carrying said item and you can only carry one at a time. I found the controls a bit clunky, and the less said about the jumping sections, the better - it's not as unreliable as SNES Wizard of Oz, but awkward as f00k on small platforms or platforms near low rooflines. There seems to be one male character in the whole game (this is becoming a thing now unfortunately). Such a shame, as everything else about the game is awesome.
This is the son of metroid and dark souls
This games reminds me of metroid fusion
Now do “Dark Light”
Plot-wise it kinda sounds like The Fall...
Does it run 4k 60 on any ofvthe platforms?
this fr is just like metroid dread
Game Pass !!
Ghost Song marks the 7 thousandth Metroidvania released this year. Personally I'm sick of them. Cant we find two new genres to smush together? Battle Royale/Text Adventure has my vote
You are in a wide open field with no weapons or clothes.
> Look around
You look around. To the North you see some buildings, to the east you see some trees. Your scanning of the area is cut short by a sniper bullet piercing your skull. You have been bested by someone far more experienced than you.
Play again?
I hope it gets a hard mode. The fact that it seems to be much easier than Hollow Knight is very disappointing to me. I was hoping Metroidvanias would learn from HK and stop with the general senior citizen difficulty.
It's not that easy. Every time you die you have get permanent damage. Give it a try!
@@gamayun6102
I'm playing it right now. The damage after death is not permanent and dying doesn't happen too often anyway, so it's almost irrelevant. Still like it though, great controls, abilities and guns feel good, and I like the atmosphere & soundtracks. It desperately needs a hard mode though.
Metroid like...
Perhaps if the developers created a walking mechanic. 🙃
Sadly the biggest Metroidvania disappointment since Axiom Verge 2 and Salt and Sacrifice. This game is basicly a combination of the worst aspects of any Metroidvania and Soulslike game. The world is detailed, but boring. Like the worst parts of Hollow Knight. Bosses are all just humanoid and thus boring too. The whole difficulty of them is just their tedious ammount of health.
NPCs constantly disturbing the exploration aspect. It could have been a great game, but sadly, it's not.
I just finished the game and I agree, I have same thoughts
@@STDavinchi Same here, this is a bad game.
This game resumes at backtracking at empty landscape fighting AI with behaviors issues that can be easily exploited and suddenly ends.
Its weird that this page rated some decent games low, but recommends this one.
It's shite.
it is an amazing game. not as hard as hollow knight. highly recommended if you like metroidvanias
The inspiration from Hollow Knight is clear and unfortunately its worse in every aspect. It was pretty good tho, the music is very good, it sets a more melancolic tone on the game rather than Hollow Knights dreary tone, neither is bad.
Veryyyy limited abilities. All you can do is shoot Lol I hate that!
To many spoilers in this review. Geez
Hmmmm, it alright in my opinion. The combat is good I guess, a bit easy for my taste. It's very obvious that it takes after the success of Hollowknight and sorta tries to copy paste that style. But it doesn't do it well. Although the characters technically have more depth than the ones in a Hollowknight, with more dialog and being more central to the story. I literally do not feel attached to any of them in the slightest. Whereas the ones in Hollowknight, even with their dialog being few and far between, build a lot more character. I think the story is pretty meh. Seeing that the characters that we are supposed to be helping are pretty boring and fairly poorly written, the story isn't complimented by that. Not to mention our protagonist, they're just....out of place. They sound like a robot anime wifu or some crap....and they're poorly written. Again they're another character that I just couldn't care less about. I'd give the game like a solid 5/10. Yes the visuals are pretty sweet and the music is good, but I could've done without playing it.
This was started in 2012 btw so it probably wouldn't of taken inspiration from hollowknight and have you gotten the second ending?
NICE GAME...FINALLY A GOOD SUPER METROID
Annoying and frustrating thing, that I last for about 30 minutes. Great opening with 2 words on the black screen, no tutorial, just throwing you to absolutely unclarified world to do hell knows what. And why would you even want to do so? main character is clunky and has no any dodge mechanic on start which makes any fight a fu.ing torture. I waited for this game and this is absolute dissapointment
I can't describe how frustrated I am with this game. I'm so disappointed. The difficulty spike at roslock alpha is absurd. I wish they would have made this more accessible. I've been the souls series and hollow knight and not ever struggled this much. Of anybody has any tips I will be glad to listen. Man I'm so disappointed. I have been waiting for this game for 2 months
Thats absurd. You are underleveled. Go explore and power up a but before trying that area.
Umm did they just lift effects and assets straight off Hollow Knight?
Looks like something out of metroid
Not good. The platforming is wonky and unresponsive. 4/10.
uh this is the wanna be Metroid.
game was fun but combat was trash. cant aim for crap
and gamepass.
I just downloaded it yesterday , its hypnotically entertaining and I love it , btw It's the only 2D game I've ever liked
